Working in JP for several years already. The truth is many workers just choose to keep working and spend the rest of their lives at work. This is more ingrained in their culture: do your bestest best for the society and your own circle (company, clan, or what, ans most of the time, never for yourself). But the cases of work gaslighting, harassment and power tripping are sadly widespread as well.
Japanese people say, as if they are educated or propagandists in the company, "Work starts today! The holidays are over! Focus on work!" as if it were a virtue.
@@LuciVsevo For sure, not everything revolves only around money. Sometimes it's better to earn some less and have ordinary life, than for instance get another promotion and so on. And if You work so much that You even don't have time or strenght to enjoy spending the money You earn, it doesn't make sense at all. Or when You are so overworked and stressed every day, that You get serious health, psychological or mental problems, like severe depression or neurosis. Or when You work so much, having no time for Your family and people who care about You, that You end up alone. Or when You get older and You have no memories that matter and have only regrets about the time of Your life wasted only by working. Such situations are just not worth it. And You know, there's another saying - that a coffin has no pockets - meaning that if You die, You cannot take Your money and material things with You. Everyone is like this. I mean, this is still better. In fact, there are people who crawl to work, people who fall asleep on the street outside at night because they are so tired, and people who go crazy and scream in the train. This is the daily life of Japanese workers. It's extremely harsh.

Fun fact: Japan is sometimes known to have a bad work culture. Sometimes Japanese workers have been seen sleeping at the workplace, not going home for multiple days. Some others will fall asleep on the ground out of exhaustion on their way home. People sometimes donate water bottles to these sleeping people.

It's nice to know that some things transcend language and cultural barriers
You don't get it, people in the west complain about working overtime, Japanese people work Overtime 80% of their working life... and whenever they aren't working overtime they go out to drink with their colleagues and the newer colleagues must behave in a certain fashion, and it's a literal hellhole of a nation when it comes to work. It is so bad that they literally invented a new phrase to talk about working oneself to death. Karoshi.
@@livedandletdiejapan has such a Ba Sing Se energy🗣️ and all indicates it's falling apart. my grandma came to Brazil from Japan during the ww2, so I could go and live there if I wanted (it's already fucked up that they would only accept people who have japanese 'blood' to live there - and if I had a child, the child couldn't because they wouldn't be japanese enough ☠️) when I was younger it looked like a cool place because animes and pokémon- but when you get older and critical about it, it's a horrible place. my dad spent more than a decade there when I was little, and he related that he only worked, even when he was sick. the only period he didn't was when he was hit by a car when he was going to work on his bicycle, luckily he only had his leg broken (one of his brothers also got in an accident but he didn't get lucky and ended up not being able to walk or move anymore). and my dad is so conflicted, he's one of those people that hate brazil, like he has this prejudice with his own people/nation, but he dislikes living in japan since he had that experience himself

At 10 years, he's now senior and can have juniors stay late/do additional work for project on his behalf (common practice)
But still...he WILL go to work...
You don’t want to do this, at some circumtances the junior take over the senior position due to lot of responsibillity he have, it happens, and you shouldn’t be a jerk, Japan office work is hard and you adds more work to your junior in japan is kinda cruel
Or, since Japan has a higher workforce percentage of people of 65, dude is stuck in his job, trying to compete for a role that wont open for 15 years.
Aging workforce is a massive global issue, Japan and Korea both see it, high cost of living, low pensions.

I can go through all those feelings about a new job on day one, before lunch.
It's because life is easy now in ways, but also stressful and difficult physically in many ways. But we push through all that and get the money because we need it, because the system sucks.
I'm glad I'm where I am in the world, but also at times I wish it was harder, or easier. Easier because life is hard, and harder because life can be too easy to the point where if feels difficult . Hope this makes sense, this is a very privileged point of view I just stated, I love what I have and don't, I love life. At points I wish I was more grateful though, but I'll be better with time. So that's why I made my comment because it is something that needs to be recognized.

There's a saying that we work to live, not live to work. So the right, healthy work - life balance is sth really essential.
That’s right 🙌
Also make sure you pick a career you enjoy, everything does revolve around money, so take that into account 🥲
By the way, nowadays even the EU in it's directives on labour issues emphasizes the importance of proper work - life balance.
It is possible to retire in your 30s and 40s if you choose the right career. Then you'll have so much life left after your working years.
@@BrandonBusby-u2b But who really has such career? I think it's rare, for most of the ordinary people. And not doing anything useful (not only to yourself, but also to the others) to the rest of your life is also not good for an individual. Actually, I think that it's good to work, to have some proffession - but under proper work conditions and in a good, reasonable, healthy work environment, including the real work hours, the appriopriate number of days of paid leave, the atmosphere at work, especially lack of mobbing, and so on.
