    I sure hope I am not the only one who did not realize that a "heat pump" was exactly the same as a normal AC condenser but with additional parts inside... If you remember the first time you heard the term "heat pump", do you recall what the first thing that came to your head was? I can't be the only one who did not imagine a condenser unit.. 😄
    True story:
    I, the greenhorn tech who did not go over heat pumps in school yet, was on a ride-along with a senior tech at my first HVAC job... After he and I looked at the furnace we went back to the van to order a part. As he was looking for the part, he realized he needed another model number so he asked me to go get him the model number of the heat pump. I said, "sure, no problem!" even though I had no idea what a heat pump was. I didn't want to look stupid - I am actively attending an HVAC school after all. So I go back to the furnace room because that's where we just were and I start looking for something that looks like a heat pump... After a few minutes, I was certain that it is not the water heater, there is no boiler, and there is nothing else that may be a heat pump.. I had a flip phone back then with no internet so I couldn't look it up either. I went back to the van and told him I couldn't find it. After a short pause, he gave me a confused look and then asked me if I tried looking on the other side of the house and pointed to where the "air conditioner" is. (I think he was simply trying to let me save face and pretended not to understand that I had no idea what a heat pump is). On that side of the house there was nothing else except the condenser unit so that was the day when I learned what a heat pump is. 😂 I gave him the model number off that condenser unit and nervously watched him type it in the laptop. To my relief, that was indeed the model number he needed. (I assumed that was a heat pump but I still wasn't 100% sure) 2 weeks later we went over heat pumps in school. 😑

    • @vejovim
      @vejovim 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you go ask a physics professor, they'll tell you: normal A/C is also a heat pump. Thermodynamically, a normal A/C unit moves heat from one place to another and is a heat pump but "air conditioning" is a colloquial phrase and has no scientific meaning. So, when these two-way systems came out, there wasn't a colloquial phrase that captured what the device is doing and they defaulted to the phrase used in thermodynamics courses everywhere. In both cases, thermodynamically, heat is being moved and, in both cases, a heat pump is what's moving the heat from one place to another. One system is just one-way and the other system is two-way but they're both heat pumps.

      There are a total of 5 wires going to the compressor. The bottom 2 black wires are for the heater. The other three (black,yellow,bluish) are the pump run start common. I think you are confusing the red into black wire splices for the heater wiring.

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No problem Luis! I remember being baffled by heat pumps as well. 😅 Yes, the heat pump heats the house instead of a furnace. The only problem is that heat pumps start to struggle and then provide no heat at all as it gets colder outside. Generally people can use a heat pump to heat the house until it gets to about 30F outside. And then the back up heat source would need to be used instead. (either an electric or gas furnace) In summary, a regular air conditioner can only cool the house but a heat pump is capable of both, cooling and heating.

    New Carrier installed two days ago, the accumulator has condensation making puddles of water. Co stating "condensation," and normal. Is this normal? Not seeing this on any other unit, my old Rheem or my neighbor's Goodman, York or Trane.

    Hello J, I come to your channel for a lot of advice and I'm back once again. This is my first year with a heat pump here in Missouri and I need some advice. This past week we've been in the teen's and 20's for high temps. I have my thermostat set at 70 but it's a cold 70. I've been told and you even mentioned in this video that I can set my thermostat to "EH" and bypass the heat pump. Doesn't that usually double your electric bill? As it is it seems run most of the time anyway. It'll run for 15-20 minutes then kick off but back on again in 10 minutes or less all day and night. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

    learnt a lot. But still it would be great to include simple steps to identify if your AC is a heatpump.

    Excellent video....fun thing is, aren't they all technically "heat pumps"...since they pump or move heat around regardless of reversing valve status.

    How do you pump down a heat pump with the reversing valve?

    on winter time and when using the heat, when my heat pump is running, i noticed that the accumulator leaks fluid from one of the pipes on the top, not always, some days is really dry and some leaks
    is this something normal??

    Hey quick question
    Where does common from cap go on the contactor? Would it go on where you got your Run from compressor/fan motor (L2) or would it go where your commons for the compressor/fan motor at (L1)

    Can u use a gas furnace and Ecoil inside n a heat pump with a reversing valve outside? Would this work

  • @jonwiersig5800

    Again, your videos are the best! I'm having my AC/gas furnace replaced. Suppliers are out of 5 ton condenser so contractor offerd to install a heat pump instead. Could this be converted to dual fuel as simply as replacing inside TXV with one that has a check valve and upgrading the thermostat? Thanks!

    So is it normal for heat pumps to run in emergency heat when it's really cold outside? Let's say when the temperature drops down to 20°F?

    Is there any reason why there is water coming out of an air vent in the house?

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That of course is not normal.. Is this a new development or has it been doing this for a long time? Is your air handler/furnace located in the attic? Is the vent in question on the ceiling, floor, or wall? Have you tried replacing the filter? Maybe the condensate drain line is plugged? Is it a leak, as in the water is flowing out or is it condensation? Is it super humid in the house? Those are my initial thoughts.. Without being there to see it, it would be hard to give an accurate diagnosis.

      Hi 👋
      Thank you for reaching out!
      The ac system is on the roof, the air vent is on the ceiling, I don’t see any water coming out of any other vents in the house, The air filters are clean, I replaced them every month, the condensate line appears to be working fine, the leak,are little drops of water…
      And lately it’s being raining a lot , I checked for any leaks from the roof, didn’t find any…

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If it is just one vent, I would suspect that the leak has nothing to do with the air conditioner.. I would take the vent cover off and look in the ductwork to see if there is any condensation gathering inside. If not, then the leak is likely not caused by the AC. But of course I can't say anything for certain 🤷‍♂️

    Can someone explain why im reading 24v on cooling mode while its in heat mode?

  • @FelixNielsen
    @FelixNielsen 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So, fundamentally, if you need a heat pump but not and air condition, then you might as well use an air condition? (not accounting for impractical aspect of convincing it to work even when the temperature is way below what would normally be required of it.)
