  • A power supply fault.
    I left a lot of my thought process in this video as I attempt to understand the theory of operation of power supplies.
    I am not an expert in anything so keep that in mind.
    Link to Schematic: Do a Google search for adp-240ar schematic and there is a link from GBATemp Forums that will allow you to download the schematic.

    Mine presents with similar conditions. My pfc runs and gets to 400v but the psu cuts off immediately. also I do not get 12v out.

      I would say that you need to focus on the 12V. If PFC is jumping to 400, it would seem that it is working correctly. IC151 is the IC that controls everything and if it doesn't detect the 12V it shuts it all down. There is something that is preventing your 12V out. Find the schematic and start working your way through the 12V circuit. Keep in mind, I am not an expert.

      @@probablycantfixit6426 Thanks. Yes I found the schematic you were using, and I am going through it. In your power supply case. As you figured out, the feedback resistors set the pfc voltage. Those resistors have a high tolerance as they need to be exact. Once the pfc voltage is lower than it should, typically one of the feedback resistors have changed value. I am not sure yet on this ps4 psu model, but on the slims, you can force the pfc to run without enabling acdc sby with the 5v by injecting about 13v with a bench power supply. You DO NEED that isolation transformer to do so.
      Like you, I am not an expert, but I do enjoy trying to fix these consoles.

      @@jonathansandiford4137 That is excellent information. You may not be an expert, but you seem to be very knowledgeable, and I appreciate the write up so others can learn from you.

      @@probablycantfixit6426 I believe it's q41 on the slim psu. It gets triggered and then allows the 13~17v generated by that dap ic (dap041/dap046) depending on the model.
      When a psu presents with a fast shutdown, but the 5v stby is present until you try to activate the 12v, it's useful to bypass this ic, by injecting voltage on its output. Doing so allows you to bypass the various built in feedback protection circuits so you can figure out what's going on, and give yourself a direction to go.
      If the pfc doesn't run or reach the voltage required, then you can investigate the pfc.
      But the psu has to be powered by an isolation transformer. Usually you will see the pfc voltage on the bulk capacitors, and if you are lucky, you may also see your 12v, which may or may not be oscillating. It makes troubleshooting a bit easier as it allows you to probe the circuit while it's live.

      @@jonathansandiford4137 I am probably don't comprehend part of the theory, but if Q41 failed, would that not interrupt VDD_SW1, which is needed to establish PFC_CTRL? It seems if that failed your PFC would never start.

    Thanks for that movie. I hade same issue and find out, that on R24 there was tin crack (or cold solder so called). Just piece of fresh tin and it work like a charm 😉

    Hello from Argentina, in most cases if the ingrades are good it is some resistance that is out of value, or cold welding in both the important R's as well as in the 2 important choppers. Greetings!

    Am trying to repair this very same psu the ps just sounds a beep without powering up when i tested the 12 volts power rail after jumping pin 1 and 5 no 12 volts is present and when i trace the circuit i fuond out tha pin 9 10 11 14 and 15 on ic32 have short circuit to ground is it that normal or the ic i faulty

    I have 400v on the pfc and I get 12v out when I short psu to make it start, but when I plug the power cord the PFC stay on 316v without starting the psu. The ps4 fast shutdown and when i remove the power cord from the psu and press the power button on ps4 it turns on and fast turn off. Do you think the psu has a problem?

    I have the exact same symptoms on my ps4 but I'm not getting the 12v when jumping the 5v pins 39:35 Is this moment when he mistakenly finds the problem or did it happen offscreen when he unsoldered the 2 resistors?🤔🤔🤔

    Am trying to fix this very same psu. The relay just turns on then immediately off i have no 12 volt on the output and i have found that ic32 pins 9 10 11 13 and 14 have a short to ground is that normal?

    • @probablycantfixit6426
      @probablycantfixit6426  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would say that it is probably not normal but I don't have one to verify on. If you search on TH-cam for Toltec Merc, he has a lot of videos about repairing power supplies and you may find an answer there.

  • @egdirkcol

    my ps4 issue is similar to yours.
    beeps once with a blue light and then dies instantly even when i spam the power button, but then if i were to unplug the power cord and plug it back in it would do the same thing. i dont have the tools you do aside from a hot air gun,.
    now my question is, would blowing hot air at the bottom of the board get them to work again? probably a bad idea but if it works then i dont have to order another psu online and wait a month.

    • @probablycantfixit6426
      @probablycantfixit6426  ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose it is possible. You could also order a Power Supply to see, for certainty, if that is the issue. If you are talking about blowing hot air on the PS, then I am not sure if that will help the issue, but you can give it a try. There are a lot of people that say this or that is a bad idea, but it is more about whether you are willing to accept the risk of what you're doing. If you are careful and precise, then I say it is OK. If you learn from it, then all is good. If the 12V rail is not shorted, then it seems the power supply could be faulty.

    Hello i have the same psu but mine have like 400 volts on main caps but doesn't have no voltage on the output, no 5v no standby no 12volt.
    I think it has to do something with the ic, what could have gone wrong

    • @probablycantfixit6426
      @probablycantfixit6426  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would start with IC151 since it is common to both 5V SDBY and 12V. I am linking the schematic in video description.
