  • NEW 2015!!! This song is sung in the eastern Miao language (Lus Qos Xyooj).
Song | Zaj Nkauj: Moux jex jang wel,Wel jang moux (Eastern Miao writing / Qos Xyooj cov ntawv) | You Don't Like Me, I Like You | 你不喜欢我, 我喜欢你 (孟几讲外外讲孟) | Koj Tsis Nyiam Kuv, Kuv Nyiam Koj
After making the Eastern Hmong/Miao short film "Quiet Village 寂寨", the director also decided to shoot this music video for his song as well. He stated that he has always wanted to do a beautiful Hmong/Miao song that can reflect on the Hmong/Miao culture, the people, and their songs. Even though the music video may be low production, he hoped that everyone would still like and enjoy this music video.
This music video was shared from our Hmong/Miao brothers and sisters from China. I hope you all enjoy. English subtitles are fully credited to: AtarashiNOhi @ TH-cam.com. Hmong subtitles are made by me.

Well, I'm from Xiangxi(eastern Hunan Province). Also, I'm Ghao Xong(Miao People). I'm just curious about you, niam txiv, are you Hmong American? Seriously this is the first song which makes me fall in love with my nation's songs. Before hearing it, most of the Ghao Xong songs are outdated or just out of style. The emotion of those old songs are sad, even I heard some in the wedding.Teenagers don't think they are euphonious especially the Ghao Xong songs are facing the challenge of modern music. When Han people in China are talking about ethnic minorities in China, they are tend to think that ethnic minorities are good at dancing, good at singing. LOL, sorry I'm not good at it. But I still hope that we could do better, these songs and cultrue make who we are. Moreover, with the impact of Han culture, contemporary or western culture, we Ghao Xong are losing our traditional skills. No influential new songs are released or posted, even to myself, I could just only understand barely half of the lyrics. Anyhow, I really appreciate you, really thanks for posting this beatiful song on TH-cam.

+Robert Ma You're welcome my dear Ghao Xiong brother. It is actually quite rare for me to find any Ghao Xiong's songs and videos as where the Central Miao, and Western Miao tend to produce more musics I believe. I'm sure there are other Ghao Xiong music and videos too, but it is harder for me to find them actually. My friend niamtxiv is also Hmong-American as well. I do suggest you two to have a conversion. He would love to learn more Ghao Xiong language actually.
And what you say is true to young Hmong-Americans as well. Traditional Hmong folk songs (山歌/飞歌) are not popular as well in this era. But these days, many of the Hmong in Yunnan are coming out of these pop style with Hmong folk song style of lyrics, which is also a bit harder for the youths to understand as well, but it is a way to carry out culture I say. Well, I forgot to say greetings from America. :)

+HmongbDebQeut (HmoobTebChaws) Hello,I'm surprised to see your reply. Like you said, Ghao Xong branch they do have their own musics. Some Ghao Xong music videos were posted on Youku, a counterpart like TH-cam in mainland China, I could download some for you guys and upload them on TH-cam. Also, I'm glad to make friends with you. As for the Ghao Xong language, well, :-) I just know some simple words and grammars.Like 'What do you want to do?' ' You don't know what I'm going to say', BUT I'M SURE THAT I CAN PICK UP MY GHAO XONG LANGUAGE, because all of my relatives, their mother tongue is Ghao Xong language
:-D. I could help you find linguistic materials and papers, I'm interested in this for a long time. It's our nation's culture, it's our nation's legacy.
The first time when I know that there are many Hmong people living in Sacramento, California and Minneapolis, Illinois was from Wikipedia, the Vietnam War. I'm glad to see that you guys get a better life there. We all know that America is a melt pot, maybe it's more difficult for you to preserve the Hmong traditional culture there. I have noticed that some Christian Hmong or other Miao branches they posted religious songs which they composed by themselves, to be honest, it's more attractive to me, LOL. Personally I think the Hmong/Miao's problem is that our original culture is not developed, we lack of our own writing, we were suddenly brought to modern culture with shocks, it makes youths confused. The other problem is we do not have appropriate organizations or activities which can make us gather together. We have our own traditional festivals, but it's not enough. Like the Christian Hmong or Miao branches I have mentioned above, it's not a bad thing, but it's contradictory to our ancestor worship, LOL. Anyhow, I will glad to see you keep your culture. PLEASE SAY HELLO TO NIAM TXIV AND HMONG AMERICAN FRIENDS TOO:-D!

AtarashiNOhi I'm glad that you like it. Thank you for the translation, but I am sorry I had to modify them a little bit only because the chinese lyrics changed around a bit, and some lyrics were actually different than the one you subbed. And some parts, I felt it wasn't as close to the chinese lyrics, so I change them to fit to more what they were saying on the chinese lyrics for I understood and can read those characters. But for the majority, I kept almost everything the same.

When it comes to Hmong history, you have to know probably 5 different parts. The 5 different parts are where Hmong/Miao people resides now: China, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and Burma. Most of the time, we often learn the basic, but our history have scattered in different parts of the countries. If you can learn all those 5 parts, then you will know Hmong history very well. Probably 6 if you want to include Hmong worldwide now.

It is Hmong but not the one that we speak. We speak the Western dialect which can be found in parts of Sichuan, Guizhou and mostly in Yunnan province. Here they speak the Eastern dialect and they live in Hunan province. Many have compared and contrasted our languages and they found many similarities.

When you're translating from Chinese to Hmong, it makes more sense than translating from English. "Young Maiden" is a lost in translation which you can't really translate from the Chinese lyrics.

How does one belong to a place? Just be proud of your culture and history. Hmong people in China are awesome. The Chinese are awesome.
