The Blofeld is a modern classic. It has great sound potential. If you dive through the menus this machine will reward you. Keep the videos coming bro, they're great for learning this synthesizer.
Just picked up a Blofeld, and so far I love it. However, after just a few pages in the manual, it became clear that I would need to look elsewhere. This tutorial on Multi Mode saved me hours today. Thanks so much!
Thank you for making this video! I just got a Blofeld and I could not for the life of me understand what the manual meant using Multi-Mode! This made it so easy and clear thank you. Loving the machine.
Wow, thanks for taking the time to make this video! Much needed as I try to set up my Blofeld for multi-timbral use. I thought I could muddle through on my own but I was wrong 😅.
Thanks for this video. I just got my white Blofeld desktop a couple weeks ago. I almost returned it after going through all the horrible distorted and clipping (many of them that is .. not all of course) factory presets, but after getting some 3rd party soundsets into it I'm now quite thrilled with it, and hope to start crafting my own patches soon. Your videos are a big help 👍
Thank you! Picked up a used Blofeld last week. It's a lot of synth for the money on the used market, though for the price of a new one an mk2 would soon be in order IMO.
Hi just bought a blofeld this morning and if it wasn't this vidio I couldn't get it going it helps imencly thanks very much I will see all your videos 👍👍
Thanks for your videos, you are a saint! Your tutorials are very high quality, I hope you are getting at least some money from TH-cam for your efforts.
This is Great! I'd just like to add: when choosing the midi channel for each part you must mute all the parts you don't want playing or they will sound, even when playing another instrument in your midi network.
Thanks a lot for your nice video! I almost never dared to use multimodes essentially because of the unfriendly interface :) Had a try on the quantum, where everything is so easier.. Let's start saving hehe!
Thank you for these videos. It helped me decide between the Blofeld and the Korg Minilogue. I already have the Korg Monologue and the Arturia MiniBrute, but I needed a good digital synth to complement my analogs. This is the perfect synth. Awesome sounds and a very small footprint. Thanks again for your great and informative videos.
Den Martos I had the same choice I was mulling over. I've decided to get both! The new Minilogue XD is a completely different beast than its predecessor - must have. The Blofeld is just an awesome synth that's not only full of programming power but it's a blast to use as well.
Thank you for making this. I've just got a Waldorf and these videos have been invaluable to me. When I first started putting sounds onto different midi channels with the multi mode, the different voices were effecting each other's gate time. I figured this is what you meant when you said that the Waldorf cannot be used for 'alot of complex sounds at once' but then with other voices, there was no integrated gate problem at all...maybe because I was using sounds with delay? I dunno...anyway, Thank you so much!!
Yes, "effecting each other's gate time" sounds a lot like "voice stealing". With "complex" I meant patches which need many processing resources. This can include also sampling, fast wavetables or many modulations.
Thanks a lot for the video. You mentioned something in the beginning that Blofeld is not meant for multi use and mostly its strength is in single part use. I'm wondering what you found as shortcoming in multi-mode? My objective is to use Blofeld along my DAW and assign let's say 8 to 12 MIDI tracks to 8 to 12 parts in dedicated MIDI out channels 1 to 8 (or 1 to 12) and play the notes created in each MIDI track for the corresponding part pretty much like the Rompler setups of 80s and 90s. The difference is that I work on shaping the sounds like a real synthesizer with all the variables in hand and I'm hoping to also use control data (CC values sent from DAW to Blofeld) to modify the variables in time domain along the composition, things like cutoff / reso / ADSR values, etc. for each MIDI track / part. I'm very new to Blofeld. Got my unit just yesterday and I'm learning it gradually. I would appreciate if you can comment in that aspect of multi if I can do such thing. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for making these videos. I'm considering getting a Blofeld, due in part to your help. Could you please elaborate on the role of the program change parameter as shown on the last page of multi-mode settings? If enabled, does this mean a MIDI controller can tell Blofeld to change part X from patch Y to patch Z?
Hi, I'm very impressive of your work and your tutorials, especially this one, cos' I'm a total beginner with the Waldorf. Need your help though : I got a Digitakt, a Keystep and so a Blofeld. I would like to use an multi effects (Digitetch, for guitar), with Midi and audio outputs, for the sound of Blo. Could you tell me how the connections must be working ? Thanks by advance !!! (a french fan)
Hi! First of all: Thank you very much for your kind words :) Unfortunately, I don't have these other devices, so I can't help you, sorry :-/ You should maybe post your question on some synth forum - they can help you for shure!
You probably need a midi thru box to get midi clock to all your devices, so they all play in time. If you want keystep to play Blofeld you set the midi channel on keystep to the same midi ch in Blofeld. If You have a multi effect with midi you connect it to the midi thru box so you can sync for instance you delay to Digitacts tempo. To use your multi effect for all you devices you need a mixer with auxiliary so you can adjust how much effect you get for each instrument. Hope that helps
I can't seem to figure out how to actually SAVE (STORE) a multimode despite having seen this several times. I get how to mute parts 9 - 16 (leaving 1- 8 for the Blofeld) on it which is great as I want my Fantom FA08 sequencing. I cant seem to save/store on mine for some reason. Everytime I've set it to Multimode 1 but every reboot 1 - 8 parts are no longer muted which is frustrating. I haven't dabbled in MIDI for a while due to health reasons so I'm just getting back into hardware again. Great video though, even if it means I can't save the data on my particular keyboard version - they might be different.
I know it's late reply, but for the sake of others. To save the multimode settings, Press and hold Shift, then press Utility, you can change your name and slot number, then again Press and hold Shift, then press Utility. Multisound should be saved.
hello mr blofeld:) i love it how you must love the blofeld:) (i think so because of that much videos about it over the years...) question: midi recieve: is there a way to make the 16 parts recieve all midi on let s say channel one? that would be huge! or on the opposite: do you know a midicontroller which can send the same note via several midichannels? i want to play with one keypress all 16 parts and mixing the parts in the blofeld... it would make it a huuuge 16 channel dronebox
Hi! You can define the MIDI channel for each part. You can also assign the same channel to every part, i.e. "omni" which means "process all MIDI channels at the same time". But remember: The Blofeld has only up to 25 voices which means that you could only play one note with 16 parts at once.
@@SynthesizerVideo oh now i got it! i did turn the encoder too soft, so nothing happened^^-thank youuuu:) one note is enough as long i can tweak the patches(parts) live. so i can change the notes via transpose for example and can fade every osc in and out with the volume encoder:) sounds huge to me. will see if it is practical to do in real;) additional question: what is one voice? is it one part made of 3 osc ´s or is it one of three osc´s of one part (patch)? --i will experiment and will see:) thank you
Anyone else find that some of the screen graphics can disappear while editing settings in multimode? I noticed some also disappeared on single mode as well. Things like the mixer, midi channel / mute settings etc but still could be adjusted as that bit be still present. I noticed in single mode things like the envelope and arp screen graphics where missing after this. Power cycling corrected the problem, i guess its a bug in the multimode side.
So when you are saving a sound in multi, can you rename it so that you don't write over the original and also have a set of sounds that you use exclusively for that multi patch as you create the patch? Or would I first have to make a few initialized sounds, name them multiA1, MultiA2, etc., and the load them into the multi patch? I could see how this multi would be a powerful tool for monosynth patches where you would not have to worry too much about polyphony. E.g. having two single saw wave sounds but each with their own independent lfo(s). Or creating one's own super saw sound patches.
The multimode uses the exact same sound memory/library as the normal mode. When you change them in multimode they will be different also in single mode. But you can also select the slot in the common memory where you save your changes. So the sound editor in the multimode is exactly the same as in single mode + multimode menu.
Not sure if this answers my question or maybe. Yes, I know it uses the same library and yes I understand that when you change a sound in multi, it changes it in single. But when you change sounds in multimode, can you save them with a different name, thus making them an altogether different patches/sounds? Or is the best way to do it is to figure out the sounds you want, duplicate them with a different file name and then work in multimode with those newly named sounds?
Ok, I think I got your first question wrong, sorry. Duplicating is the best way, I think. The multimode is a bit tricky and was added later as an additional feature in the Blofeld - so some parts of it are a little basic. The patch management for instance. So, there is no possibility to save all sounds at once or to store the complete multi programm with all patches. You have to treat every sound separately.
Hi guys. Do you use some software tool to backup and manage multis? I would like to have something that downloads and backups the multis including the patches and then allows me to upload them to Blofeld later in a smart way - i.e. using empty sound and multi slots for the upload of sounds and multis from the backup library.
great tutorial! but i still can't play two sounds at the same time! i managed to store one sound(an arpeggio on hold - M001) on part 1 on the first half of the keyboard, and it keeps playing when i skip to part 2! but when i change the sound on part 2(from M001 to M002) the sound/arpeggio on part 1 stops playing and i can only play the other sound(M002). I thought i pre-programmed and saved every little setting for both parts but it still doesn't work. what have i missed? also, does multitimbral mean i can play (at least) two different sounds/presets AND different notes at the same time?? e.g.: can i play one sound (pads) with my left hand and a different sound(arpeggios) with my right hand if i spilt the keyboard? or does it only mean that when you play one note/chord the synth plays two different presets but those same notes at the same time?
It seems that you just programmed two different multi parts, not two sounds within one multi program. Press and hold shift and turn the knob to switch between sounds within one program.
@@SynthesizerVideo thank you for your quick response! but i think there is something wrong with my blofeld :I holding shift and turning the program knob doesn't do anything differently than just using the knob without holding the shift down. also i can't even save sounds anymore for different parts that i could manage a few days ago...now i'm scrolling through different preset-sounds on the screen but when playing the keys it just keeps playing the same first sound...or the arpeggiator gets stuck. sometimes turning on and off helps but its frustrating. i think im just gonna play it single sound mode and try to hunt another blofeld..
I have a blo desktop connected to the Arturia keylab essential via MIDI ,i created a multi in th blo but i can only play 1 part at the time changing midi channel on the keylab,What im doing wrong..............................
It seems that you could get some complex sounds with 24 notes and 16 parts. As you showed, the first 4 parts could use their own effect 1, and share effect 2. If you just used 4 parts all on midi channel 1, when you play one note on the keyboard it would use up 4 of the 24 notes? That seems very reasonable to me! Unless each oscillator in each sound uses up 1 note for polyphony? In that case you’d run out very quickly...
Every voice keeps one note of one complete patch. Four parts with one note each = four voices. But if you need long release times, you can run out of voices very soon because the released voices would still play when you hit the next notes.
Synthesizer Video Service when I think of Juno 106 it had only 6 voices and sounded good. If you have 4 parts with 1 note each, you end up with 6 voices too... I think it could sound good!
Parts of this were very confusing to me. How about a description of what multi mode is/does ?
