@rock3tcat That's exactly what it is. The clutch is right next to one of the gear shifters, on the back of the steering wheel. If you look closely there are two paddles on one side, and just one on the other. Two gear shifts, up and down, then the clutch.
It depends on the type corner. Generally speaking, race drivers don't like understeer and prefer slight oversteer as it helps to turn the car in and they can stay on the gas. Having said that however, on a race track drivers prefer slight understeer only on high speed corners as it's less risky in case the car misbehaves.
He has a very good second driver, and he has a lot of experience, he has raced turbo F1 cars as well. He was also teammate to both Senna and Schumacher (I think he's the only one to have done that).

@isftish in understeer, a driver can easily pitch the car mid corner and power over the resulting slide, instead of hesitating and pushing the car wider on the exit...much quicker with the slide
well, yes it's possible, but really very very hard. you can try to sort of pump the steering (straighten and turning hard a few times), or use the handbrake to balance the slide. easiest thing to do is to tap the brakes a few times to transfer more weight to the front. but the key thing is skidding tyres tend to remain skidding, and gripping tyres to remain gripping. a good driver will do his best to avoid being in a severe understeer condition.

Well, they going to use the same GP corners but Abbey, when they reach Abbey they turn right instead of left, use a small straight that leads to another left corner, then take that inside straight at 1:15 and retake the actual track at Brooklands.

the truth is if your car oversteers, you can use the throttle and steering to maintain control. but if your car understeers, if you brake you probably lock the front wheels. if you throttle up a bit, that's just going to lift the front end, further reducing front end grip, and you just drive straight off, with the front wheels pointing sideways helplessly. all you can do is gradually slow and hope the front end regains grip. if it doesn't....off you go.

@materm: not in a f1 car mate, a slide will flatspot the tires causing lack of grip through vibrations at high speed. but even if you didnt know that you could use common sense: "hmm.. f1 cars I see on tv dont slide much.. why i wonder? maybe because its slower"

There has to be more to it in Nascar than what meets the eye. I mean, people fancy such things because they see some sort of skill level in it that requires a great deal of practice and patience. It's like American Football, people hate it because they don't seem to understand the complexity that comes with the sport. So, I would most certainly assume the same thing with nascar.
I think martin brundle is the best commentators in formula one miles better than murray walker, even though he was enthusiastic. Brundle is very knowledgeable he asked questions about the wear on the brakes in the Spanish gp (Valencia I think) and brawn, Ferrari MacLean werent worried about it the start and most team had smoking brakes at the end!
A lot of ranting about NASCAR and F1 here. Why can't you enjoy both, they are completely different and both are full of skilled drivers. NASCAR is more popular in the US sure, but in the rest of the world F1 is by far the most popular. The 2010 season has been one of the best for many years, amazingly talented and skilled drivers, and engineers. Its about pushing technology as much as it is about the perfection of driving a car, driver and machine in harmony, a pure team sport.
i love it when peopele say F1 isnt a sport, you dont know how fit you have to be an F1 driver, and the amount of control you need on it, i'll never be an F1 driver so i want to get into working for a team :S
This sums it up: I am American, i have watched ZERO NASCAR races and at least 4 F1 races flag to flag. F1 is much better. Can't WAIT for Codes F1 2010 to ship (just need a good wheel now)

@801burton If you accelerate the weight will transfer to the rear making the front go light, hence more understeer.

3.5 G in a corner is about the max at the moment. 5 G under braking from a long straight, such as the back straight at shanghai.

@odv18 The point in the video he was referencing was when the car was pulling out of the garage, so yes, it was the clutch.

The clutch is only used for take-offs so when the driver releases it, the car will bite into gear

@evoben24 technically, nascars are faster. Rusty wallace did a test at talladega without a restrictor plate and the car hit 242 MPH.
