One of the stupidest things you can say besides, everything's going to be okay, is she/ he is young, they'll be all right. Bull!

I hear you, but younger people tend to be more resilient than when they become older. Troubles and tragedies aren't something anyone really gets OVER, but most of us eventually get THROUGH them. And average people in the 1800s didn't have the benefit of modern "feel good" pop-psychology that anyone today can access from the media to be able to offer much consoling things to say than "don't cry," "It's okay," etc.

In the old days, if you suffered pain, tragedy, loss, or personal disaster, you either had to get up, dust yourself off, and stsrt all over again to take life by the horns, or else you very possibly might die; they didn't have modern infrastructure, technology, medicine, and perpetual means to house and to feed some shattered soul three meals a day like what's now in place and taken for granted today, especially if you lived in the Old West and lived too far away from what little was in place for helping devastated people deal with their problems and afflictions. Often, a pat on the back and uttering a few nice-sounding platitudes were all most people could do to console others before more modern methods came along to help people when they're down. So maybe we shouldn't be too hard on Matt for being at a loss to know what to say to the poor girl, who had lost everything, that would do her any good.

@@crazyhorseaz5224 We know certain things to be true of God for one reason: in His mercy He has condescended to reveal some of His qualities to us. God is spirit, by nature intangible (John 4:24). God is One, but He exists as three Persons-God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:16-17). God is infinite (1 Timothy 1:17), incomparable (2 Samuel 7:22), and unchanging (Malachi 3:6). God exists everywhere (Psalm 139:7-12), knows everything (Psalm 147:5; Isaiah 40:28), and has all power and authority (Ephesians 1; Revelation 19:6).
