    I use glass cutting mat or something that is not porous. Wet both sides of the paper and the cutting mat. It stops the paper from bending and keeps it wetter for longer. If you need your paper to stay wetter for even longer, lift up painting and re-wet cutting mat.

    • @deannamunro8148
      @deannamunro8148 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yes, Hen, i do the same - wetting both sides is the key, I think

      Is it just the solid sheet of mat that you use or is there glass somehow involved? Maybe wording my question differently will help.... What is 'glass cutting mat' - is it actual glass?

    • @electrichen6243
      @electrichen6243 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WhatsMarlyUpTo It's like a self healing cutting matt that crafters use, but it's made of toughened glass. You could use a glass worktop protector or glass chopping board. A lighter choice is plastic display boards.

    To keep your paper from buckling and also to make it stay wet longer, wet the underside with clean water before starting your painting and it will stay flat on your surface. Hope that helps!

    Loved your foggy forest. Buckling? You might try some washi tape made into a circle (so it's double sided) and stick it on the middle of your paper & on the table. Although, it makes it hard to turn your paper around - I have a lazy susan that I put my work on if I need to move it around a lot.

  • @sped17373
    @sped17373 ปีที่แล้ว

    This might be within limited capabilities, especially being monochromatic. I just ordered one of those Grumbacher 4620 brushes from Amazon--I got a size 12 as they're only $5.99! Today my Stonehenge 10" x 14" 300 lb. cold-press block arrived--impressively heavy! Saving that for when I can actually maybe create something and not waste it. I have some Arches hot-press to work with plus lots of heavy bristol board for play/practice and finally tomorrow I'll have more paint to work with, new half pans coming.
    Right now am watching lots of YT videos, learning a lot from different watercolorists. One thing I really like about watercolors is that it's so loose and spontaneous, you kind of let the paint do its thing--so different from my usual highly controlled airbrushing where you don't want paint doing anything on its own.
    I'm subbed...so many techniques to learn!

    Wet both sides of the paper and place it on a piece of glass. The water on the back side should keep the paper attached to the glass. The top should dry while the bottom side stays damp and in contact with the glass. Not sure if it will work for this technique but you could at least start this way.

    Aside from a comment you made about how you sometimes tape your paper down…you never mentioned anything about the issue of the paper buckling when using wet-on-wet. I presume then, that you stretched the paper prior to this tutorial? It would be a good idea to mention that, especially for beginners.

    • @JuliaLisArt

      No I didn't stretch the paper. I don't know if it was this tutorial but I started wetting the back of the paper first to prevent buckling.
