For me, in this MV, they both are telling and experimenting the same story (break up) but in a different way. Taeyeon has her own story of break up and Kibum has his own story of break up too.

Key really likes retro & old school concept. If I'm not mistaken he mentioned how he wanted to bring back MTV vibes but just less bright.
This song isn't my cup of tea either but I really like every SHINee member artistic expression. Their solo are all so different with each other. Excited for his concert!

So, here is my theory about what I think is happening in Key's "Hate That ..." MV.
Some people have said they think Key was hitting a self-destruct button which caused his spaceship to carean out of control -- referencing how his life is self-destructing after the breakup -- but I interpret it more as he is pressing the button to disengage his space capsule from the rocket boosters, etc. which is what is keeping him up there in space and on a perpetual orbit of the Earth. So, when he hits the button we see the capsule detach from the rest of the ship and fall back down to Earth, where we then see him back on Earth with Taeyeon. (He is crash landing back to reality and is no longer allowing himself to orbit in the realm of living in the the past and allowing himself to continue to obsess over the relationship.)
And just to clarify, the words of the song are meant to be self-loathing. They say, "I hate that I hate that you're happy without me." So Key and Taeyeon are saying that they hate that they can't stop themselves from hating their ex just because that person is happy without them. So in other words, they are saying, we had a perfect breakup and it should have been easy, but "I hate that I still can't get over you and that I still love you. ... I wish you were in as much pain as I am right now," etc. Key only says I love you once in the song because he is only allowing himself to admit that he still loves them, once. It's like he can no longer hold back the fact that no matter how much he knows the breakup was for the best, he reluctantly has to admit that he still loves them.
At the end of the MV we see what looks like Taeyeon being rescued from the rock that she has been trapped on in the middle of the ocean. (The rock representing a rough, unforgiving place that is extremely uncomfortable, etc. in the middle of the cold desolate ocean all alone with nowhere to go.) Which I see as her being pulled out of that dark place. And as the news report on the TV screen says, "Breaking News: Woman rescued after ..." We don't know what comes after the word after because it's up to us all to decide how we choose to live our lives after a breakup, each individual person fills in the blank with their own idea of what "after" looks like.
Key and Taeyeon are best friends and they have a sibling relationship -- often referred to as the Kim siblings -- so they are most definitely not portraying that they were in a relationship together. (That would just be kind of weird. LOL) As they mentioned during their VLive event before the premier of the MV, in the story they are talking about two separate relationships and going through their own experiences. Or portraying different sides of the same person. I see the story as way more metaphorical than just a simple breakup story, it's more like Taeyeon and Key are comizerating with each other because they understand what each other is going through.
Taeyeon is really close with all the members of SHINee. She has also collaborated with Jonghyun in his song "Lonely" and Taemin's recent song "If I Could Tell You" which is on his Advice album. (Fun fact: Taeyeon's pink hair is left over from her recent solo promotions for her song "Weekend" which she just had a comeback for a couple of weeks ago.)
On a side note: I also think that with all the imagery of space, that at least a few scenes, if not the whole MV, also connects in someway to SM's Universe. I see the space theme not only connected to SHINee's "Don't Call Me" MV, but also to their "I Want You" MV and Key's "Forever Yours" solo debut MV, among several of SM's other groups' MVs. I have a feeling that "Hate That ..." might connect to another part of SM's storyline either with parts of the story in a past MV, or even things might become more clear in the future as this story connects to upcoming MVs, etc.
Key had his solo debut in 2018 right before he went off to the military, so he has one previous album called Face -- with MVs for his songs "Forever Yours" and "One of Those Nights" -- and his repackaged album I Wanna Be with it's title track "I Wanna Be" MV and his SM Station single "Cold" MV. "Hate That ..." is a prerelease single. His upcoming second album will be out Sept. 27.
As I am always reminding people, when it comes to SM content, if something reminds you of something else or you see similarities between something in one MV to something in another MV, than it was most likely done on purpose. Because pretty much everything SM does is connected. For example, I see obvious similarities between Taeyeon's red dress and Key's red outfit in SHINee's "Don't Call Me" MV -- the red is a very specific shade of red -- and the way she is standing on the rock in the middle of the ocean is very similar to the way that Key was standing on the submerged phone booth in "Don't Call Me," which I see as being connected to SM's Universe storyline. And some have even pointed out that the canister you see break a hole through Key's space capsule and land next to Taeyeon in the water could be a reference to the soda can we see Key holding in SHINee's "Atlantis" MV, etc.
So, because of this, I think people need to pay attention to all of the storylines with all of SM's groups, because I think at least all of SM's third generation groups' MVs and storylines -- and probably even now their 4th gen groups with the introduction of aespa last year -- are being designed to connect stories and plots.
Each group has their own individual storyline and concept, but when you put them all together, there are threads of connections between the groups. And that includes SuperM, EXO, Red Velvet, NCT/WayV, aespa, and maybe even Taemin's solo work, and possibly even SHINee. Even though SHINee are second gen, they actually fit within the age group of third generation groups, so they sort of bridge that gap between 2nd and 3rd gen.
And although most of SM's older groups' concepts and MVs may have never been originally designed to have any type of connection to anything to do with anything, that doesn't necessarily mean that over the years as EXO's story has evolved or SM's Universe concept was being created, that SM didn't find "happy coincidences" within those MVs that allowed them to use them as a way to connect things together. For example, some have pointed to the fact that NingNing's butterfly in aespa's concept could be connected to the butterfly in EXO's "Mama" MV, and some have even made compelling arguments that it could even be connected to SHINee's butterfly in "Ring Ding Dong." Or the blue roses we see in Taemin's "Press Your Number" MV may be connected to EXO's flower/blue rose concept, etc. Now I'm not completely convinced that SM would reach back that far, but it makes you question and consider things. :D I mean we see what looks like the pink planet from Super Junior's recent "House Party" MV and a scene from Super Junior-K.R.Y.'s MV in "aespa's ep.1 - SM Culture Universe" video. And SM has even brought Kangta, who is a member of the very first Kpop boy group H.O.T., which debuted in 1996, into the storyline with his most recent solo MV remake of H.O.T's song "Free to Fly." So it's starting to look like SM may be hinting at bringing everyone into the storyline, including their older groups and artists.

SHINee is my ultimate group and I have been a Shawol since their debut and a Kpop fan since 2006, so I have been following the Kpop industry, and especially SM -- but definitely not limited to only SM groups and artists -- for a very long time. I could tell you a lot of useful, useless knowledge about a lot of groups, artists and the history of Kpop in general. Super Junior brought me into Kpop and SHINee made me fall in love, and groups like Infinite and 2PM sucked me into the whole Kpop universe.
In Korea, these two are called 'Taengkey'(탱키) and they shoot advertisements together and do variety shows.

"hate that I hate that you're happy without me" is way different than just "hate that you're happy without me", the second one is toxic post-love the first one show that you feel bad being jealous of the person, you can't control your feelings and it hurts you to hate the person being happy, you hate being jealous

Aaron you really need to check out Key’s works. His first album was so good. The tempo is a bit old school because that’s the he likes it. He likes old school retro music. He has really good music. I seriously think Key deserves to get more appreciations.

yes it happens when the breakup is really bad... like before the person broke up with you he/she ruined all the good memories first. i feel like when you feel this way and it gets prolonged, it will really hold you back from moving on and even trying for a new relationship. not because the breakup was so painful, but because you really don't want to see yourself falling into such a toxic mindset.

The headline *"A woman rescued after b--"* implies that Taeyeon has moved on already. Thus, you can see she's now the one who's leaving Key inside that resto.
In the first part of the video, Key was the one who's leaving (he's on a spaceship leaving earth). Whereas Taeyeon was still sitting and waiting at the rock (the place where they prolly broke it up). This implies Taeyeon cannot move on from him, and for a long time she's stuck in that place.
But when Key decided to push that 'eject' button and came back to earth (because he still loves her and wanted her back), he went to that same place where Taeyeon was waiting at previously. But she wasn't there anymore - meaning she's tired of waiting for him and just moved on.
Next is the scene at the restaurant where Taeyeon was now the one leaving Key waiting inside. The headline of a woman being rescued is about Taeyeon who's finally moved on after their break up. Finally saved from drowning herself in her feelings.
*ABOUT THE LYRICS*
Their parts/lines during chorus - they keep on thinking the other is happier after their break up. But the truth is they both still love each other. They're just waiting for each other, until the other got tired and has moved on already, leaving the other stuck.
