great tips Clive, the first acrylics class I took, the instructor brought 20" x 24" canvases and it was really intimidating for first timers, never went back, much easier to learn from artists like you and it doesn't cost $40 a lesson , thanks for all you do :)

I enjoyed this video very much. Thank you. I do a lot of miniature paintings, mainly in Watercolour, and find they make awesome ideas for larger paintings... So your tip to paint "small" leads to greater things later on, is spot on. Thanks for an informative and interesting channel. I especially enjoyed your visit with Jason Bowen... The two of you really had a ball, and produced some lovely paintings.

I do my ideas on poster boards cut down in the size of postcards. When I paint, I tend do lose track what I'm doing so on the back, I list whether its the trees or clouds and the colors I'm using, then add in with color pencils. I experiment with day or nighttime, but obsessed with the color green. I've tried black-and-white paintings with touch of green to see how it would look like. I found this video very interesting and helpful.

You are correct about brushes being difficult to choose Clive! When I started painting I had no idea what to use! I simply bought a few cheaper and then a few more expensive (on sale!) and found what I liked best! Funny thing....some of the cheaper ones were my favorites!😁

    • @CLIVE5ART

Love the picture behind you. Like many in the north east, my Grandfathers were miners. One worked in Kibblesworth pit and Birtley pit. The other in the Alice pit Rowlands Gill, Haltwhistle and High Spen. As moved throughout their working lives from fourteen years old looking for work. My mother’s Dad Edward, died with coal dust. Out of interest, All pits in the UK are listed in the coal boards records and can be found on line. Our first house we found out had been built over the old pit head of the King Pit, otherwise known as the notorious Storemont Main pit. It was eventually closed due to gas explosions which had been a problem since it opened in the 1800s. Terrible conditions with many killed. The Alice Pit was a shallow drift pit, still open during the Second World War. When bombers were flying over Newcastle and Gateshead looking for Vickers Munitions and the Alloy Works, the miners were called up quickly out of the pit until the all clear. The men were called out of bed for their early shifts by a knocker-upper. The Alice had better conditions for the men and accidents were few. A housing estate was built over it in the 1960s. One house finding a huge hole under the floor boards of their living room when a pit shaft collapsed beneath it. That house was demolished.

I've been painting since I was little. I sell my paintings cheap because I make a lot at a time and use very cheap paint like walmarts 50 cent paints. I never had a class in art I didnt go to college didnt have the money. But let me tell you I love to paint. Your videos are the closest thing to having an art teacher/art class I will ever know. Great advice. Particularly about the brushes. I fretted for months over the making sure I got the right brushes to make my paintings successful. Now I realize that it's how I use the brushes I have that will make that success. I had an artist friend many years ago. He was much older than me and was a very respected and popular painter in our local area. He sold paintings by the dozens. What brush did he use? None. He used a 6 inch plastic ruler to paint. That's it. He's been gone a long time now but there was recently a gallery showing of his works donated by patrons. It was difficult to believe that those beautiful paintings came from a plastic ruler. Forgetting they really came from the man who wielded that ruler. Well, I made a short story long but my real point is...Thanks for calming my fears about brushes!

Reminds me of a story I used to river fish I was walking down the bank one day and came across a man fishing and after asking how he was doing he said I’m going to give this up as I’ve not caught anything for weeks I bought this new rod and it’s not working,, I said it not the rod its what you do with the rod , what do you means the man said,, I cut a length of nut stick from a tree attached some line and a hook cast out on the edge of a swell and pulled in a 2lb trout, What he said it’s about reading the river not about the tools you use I said. The brush does not make an artist the artist is the brush
