A video of the commemoration of the Spanish Armada, 1,100 of whose soldiers and sailors died at Streedagh Beach in September 1588. Part of the annual Remembering the Armada events which take place in Sligo, Ireland each year.
This event features the OPV Atalaya, a Spanish Navy ship, which lies at anchor in Sligo Bay, and some of its crew members took part on shore. Also Irish naval representatives were present as well as many local people and Spanish visitors. Filmed and edited by Micheál Ó Domhnaill of Omedia, drone footage by Damien Kennedy. My ancestors sailed from Valencia - they were traders, father, and his three sons. They each sailed their own barques in the Armada Grande, and Drake certainly damaged them. Then one day the father arrived home. The three sons never returned. One - at least survived and came ashore. This was tbe story handed down in the family.
This - to me is where it gets very interesting. I was checking in to a hotel in Preston, as I walked away, the receptionist called me, and an gentleman with his wife also went to tbe desk. We both had the same surname! I am British, English by birth, but the gentleman was Spanish! We met and had a drink and then dinner. This is the tale he told:
When the pope called for the invasion of England, and Phillip II agreed to supply the basques - ships, the family supplied 4. Father's name was Jamie, and the sons: Juan, Carlos and Leon.
The mother was Maria, and daughters Teresa, Margareta and Maria a total of 7 children, plus the mother was pregnant with an 8th child who was born whilst her husband was away.
Then one day the father - he came home, and of tbe sons nothing was ever seen or heard of again. Yet as my 'relation' said 'One must have survived, but which on? We will never know.' Strangely my grandfather was James - Jamie, my father Leo, an uncle John - Juan, another uncle Charles - Carlos, my aunts were Teresa, and Margaret - Margareta.
More recently one of my brothers has proved the connection via my paternal great grand parents to Ireland - great grandad - Joseoh Patrick born in Drogheda and my great grandfather mother Bridget born in Belfast.
I was always lead to believe there was no Irish blood in Mr, but why did someone deem it necessary to deny it. Was it because they tried to hide that fact due to the anti-Irish attitude of many English who had an attitude of 'I am English by the grace of God and have dominion over all people I deem to be lesser beings?'

It's incredible... irish people feeling more proud of Spain than the spaniards themselves. That's something I'll never understand, these sort of tributes in Spain would be seen as a fascist act by society and media, both ruled by left and marxism. We must be the only country in the world where its own flag is frowned upon.
