A severance package is also a fairly common arrangement in some industries and for some job positions. These can be so substantial that for many they totally replace other benefits. The pay can match salary for instance for 3 or 6 months or more and also include other benefits.
During that period a person is not eligible for other kinds of unemployment allowances from Kela.
No unemployment allowance is intended to be a permanent situation. There is always an obligation to seek employment and take jobs if offered.
A severance package most likely doesn't come with such obligations.

Another kind of "safety net" in work live are trade unions. Those too can be seen as insurance, which can help in difficult situations by their information, advice, negotiation power, legal help and simply by offering a network of other people in similar situations and challenges. It's also something I recommend especially for immigrants.
    Why for immigrants:
They have less background information about the country and work-life in Finland.
They can often use additional networks to integrate more.
It can be an interesting experience for a person, who comes from a different culture.
There is also the possibility that there are people who feel that immigrants have arrived to take away "their" jobs.
Jobs which they could have, if there wouldn't be the competition from the immigrants.
It can be helpful to meet these people in organisations like labor unions and build more positive contacts and create feelings of belonging to the same group and not having to think just in terms of them/us.

For people who have worked in Finland before becoming unemployed, there is an other system, which is a earnings -related unemployment allowance system by the unemployment fund system and not by Kela.
It's the preferred system since the allowance is tied to your income before unemployment and mostly significantly higher than the unemployment allowance by Kela.

Having economic safety nets in the society makes living less scary. But if you fall, it's not comfortable. Safety nets are best, when they are there but you don't fall and don't have to test how falling and getting caught by a net feels like.

In the USD and Euro based economies keeping liquid funds simply on bank accounts has been cheap during the years of minimal or zero interest rates. But now with more normal interest rates one has to worry more about inflation and how it can eat liquid funds, if they don't produce sufficient gains.
One has to think how to save and where to keep liquid funds, which would be a personal safety net for unexpected situations and immediately or very easily available for spending if needed.

Unemployment benefits are a fairly complex topic, if details are included. The basic legislation alone has hundreds of details, and it's just the starting point for the system.
People who haven't been exposed to the system are likely to have an impression that it's less complex and demanding than it is.
The system is also often going through some changes, some adjustments or bigger changes. Unemployment benefits work together with other social benefits. This all needs to be seen holistically in order to see what the effects actually are for the society, individuals and households. Many moving parts make it challenging. Attempts or suggestions to simplify and streamline the system always exists.

@ZahidkhanKhan-ze5hh Depends totally on the type of visa you have been given. Try to convert your visa to either Type B or Type A. Type A is a first step towards PR after 4 years of stay. Things will change soon in Finland, too, and Visas will be difficult and PR even more difficult. Good luck.

If you have work in hand by the time the visa renewal time comes, I think it won't effect, but yes, no country want liabilities. To understand this situation more, I will suggest to go and visit Kela department once, they will give you knowledge on who can guide you the best. Also, there are coaches that are assigned for people in TE or Kela. The coaches are huge assets to use in receiving proper guidance.

Many recommendations talk about an amount equivalent to 3-6 months' salary, at least 2 months' salary, in Finland.
Such liquid savings are useful for unpredictable situations like becoming unemployed and having to figure out what to do next and possibly waiting for unemployment benefit payments.
Is this any different in India?

    • @SunitaKumar1206
      @SunitaKumar1206  หลายเดือนก่อน

We have different structures in India. The regulations around self-employment are very low. Starting up and growing business is easy, with less documentation and less taxes. Hence, you will recognise a pattern of self-reliance in Indian population. Every family has at least 2 to 3 sources of income. We don't have unemployment benefits in India. We recieve other facilities to not run out of finances.

There aren't any unemployment insurance funds or severance package systems either?
In Finland most households have also several income sources since adults usually all have some employment, earning salaries. Some people have several part-time jobs.
After age 16 many children have some part-time jobs, but that is more motivated by getting experience than income.
Many households have also some capital which they have invested in rental apartments or some other types of investments, which give them regular income.
I haven't noticed much regulations restricting self-employment in Finland outside licensed professions.
I don't count taxation as regulations, not as restriction. Having to do accounting and handling VAT to enable reporting income and revenue for taxation purposes, is that regulation in your terminology?
I have been self-employed for almost 20 years before retirement.

      "Living between different countries"..
That is an experience, which can include many kinds of experiences.
I used to work briefly in California. I got paid by a company where the only method of paying my salary and reimbursements of expenses was by a bank cheque in a local (US) bank.
When I then moved back to Finland, they mailed the cheque to my home address in Finland. Bank cheques were not much used in Finland since the direct payment systems to bank accounts had replaced them decades ago. I had to take the American bank's cheque to a local bank office to have it cashed. It was a service they offered for a fee. That fee itself was something I could reimburse from the company in the US. So I ended up in an endless cycle of bank cheques and reimbursements..
The US company didn't see any reason to act any differently or to use any other payment methods. The department handling salary and reimbursement payments were willing to continue this endlessly.

There is a category kevytyrittäjyys in Finnish, light entrepreneurship in English.
Invoicing, accounting etc. can be easily outsourced from companies which have tailored services for self-employed people.
It's not the economically most efficient way for all kinds of businesses. But if administrative tasks are what a self-employed person would like to avoid, they offer a solution for that.
      "Light entrepreneurship
Are you interested in light entrepreneurship? It may suit you if you want to sell your skills as services and thus try entrepreneurship on a small scale.
Light entrepreneurship is a growing form of entrepreneurship. Its second name - invoicing entrepreneurship - describes its characteristic nature well: an essential role is played by the invoicing company, which invoices the entrepreneur's customers for the services he sells. Neither of the terms are official, they are designations used in marketing and everyday language.
Often, light entrepreneurship is the beginning of an entrepreneur's career. It's an easy way to try out how to fly as an entrepreneur or how to sell your own expertise on a small scale. Lean entrepreneurship avoids, for example, high start-up costs.
There are a few tens of thousands of invoicing light entrepreneurs in Finland.
What kind of activity is light entrepreneurship suitable for?
Light entrepreneurship is suitable, for example, for selling services, when you want to utilize your own skills and sell your services to others. Typical light entrepreneurs are, for example, professionals in the cultural sector.
Light entrepreneurship is not suitable for sectors whose operation requires a license, such as health care, electrical installation work or real estate brokerage. Permits for such activities are obtained by the entrepreneur, and cannot be outsourced to the invoicing company."

      From the Kela website:
      Average processing time
      20 days of receipt
      Last updated 30/5/2024
Some applications will be processed faster than the average while others will take longer
First register with the TE Services as an unemployed jobseeker. TE Services will give Kela a statement about whether you are eligible for unemployment benefits. After that, Kela will process your application.
The time shown is an average calculated on the basis of the last seven days. Some applications will be processed faster than the average while others will take longer. A longer-than-average processing time is often due to the application missing relevant information or documents which must be requested from the applicant.
‘Days’ here refers to all days of the week including weekends and official holidays.
The processing of an application may also take longer if the applicant has for example lived abroad or if the application has been returned for re-evaluation following an appeal. Applications may take longer to process for example at the turn of the year if there are changes in the amounts and qualifying conditions of benefits.

    • @just42tube
      @just42tube หลายเดือนก่อน

Kela as well as unemployment insurance funds update their processing time and queue information on their websites.
Part of the processes is manual labor with a limited workforce handling them. The numbers of benefit applications does have some seasonal variations but does have bigger fluctuations depending on many economic factors causing significant changes in the workload of processing applications.
Individual applications can also have their own complications giving more delays in the process. Having to ask and wait for additional information or having more delays in checking information all adds delays. The first application is always more difficult and takes more time. If am application arrives and all relevant information has stayed unchanged from the previous one, then processing is simple and fast.

Your question touched a more generic topic: How much funds should a family or a person have in liquid funds for unpredictable difficult situations like becoming unemployed.
Many recommendations talk about an amount equivalent to 3-6 months' salary, at least 2 months' salary. For many 6 months is too difficult many situations. 2 months can be insufficient in some situations. 3 months salary is a more reasonable compromise for many.
This allows additional time in unusual situations.
It includes time for applying and processing of benefits and getting the payments on your bank account with reasonable margins for other unpredictable complications like being sick etc.

For those short sighted people who consider unemployment fund membership as an unwanted additional cost:
Those who do not belong to unemployment funds pay unemployment insurance payments from their wages like others, but they do not benefit from them when they become unemployed.

Some of the terminology in English is context-sensitive meaning that words have somewhat different meanings in different countries, cultures and jurisdictions. This gives additional challenges using some terminology in English. The Finnish system is defined using texts and terminology in local official languages. Translations into English can be done, but it requires that readers understand the terminology in the Finnish context. Some native English speakers say that the Finnish terminology is less generic, more precise compared to what is commonly used in the USA and UK. I don't know about Indian.

I think the following could be a useful summary of the earnings-related unemployment insurance system:
Unemployment funds carry out a public duty and their activities are governed by laws. The main laws affecting the functioning of the unemployment funds are the Unemployment Fund Act (työttömyyskassalaki 603/1984) and the Unemployment Protection Act (työttömyysturvalaki 1290/2002). The unemployment funds are also subject to the many laws that govern the activities of public authorities. This includes the Administrative Procedure Act and the Act on the Openness of Government Activities.
The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health provides the unemployment funds with instructions and guidelines regarding the application of these laws. Any changes to the laws governing unemployment funds are also mainly prepared by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health or the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.
In turn, the Financial Supervisory Authority monitors the activities of the funds. This monitoring includes, for example, the implementation of unemployment security, the operational measures of the funds, their financial status, and management, control, and risk management methods.
