I know this probably sounds like a shameless plug (and I suppose it is a little). But seriously, I feel like we designed this for a guy exactly like you.
A good idea would be to put a cloth on it like a cloth wrapped around it this way it would still spring but it would also be protected food for thought

What kind of welder did you use ? I want to add a gas can holder like you did to my trailer. But I do not know if I just just buy a hf welder or spend a little extra cash on a name brand

I am just saying, using garage door springs as a trailer gate lift assist is definitely one of the most dangerous things you can use them for. You need to consider that they are designed to be wrapped around a support to open a garage door. Therefore, if one does break under tension it does not have much room to travel anywhere. Even then they are still extremely dangerous to say the least. Think about how dangerous they can be if one fails under tension and is allowed to swing freely. There are plenty of horror stories online and some of them are right here on TH-cam. I remember one instance where an individual suffered a pretty serious injury to his face. I was pretty certain he was using it as a trailer assist, but cannot recall.
I must compliment your cable mechanism though. I would imagine that if the spring does fail it could help prevent the spring from swinging freely like I mentioned before.
hay just an Idea of you are doing lots of mowing thoes John Deere are going to shit, the stamped decks will bend and the engine is not that good. I own a company and we ran one of thoes on our small crew. I recommend a exmark lazer z or a toro z master. or the cheapest one we run a toro titan.

Yes. Those springs can break. Especially when out in the weather. Better safe then sorry. Cable is fantastic upgrade.

i did same thing with my tail gate ramp. just like your garage door.
i would put a ramp on the side and get a walkbehind
