  • Robert Agnew, Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Sociology and newly elected president of the American Society for Criminology (ASC), talks about his background in the field of criminology, especially his work on general strain theory. As president of the ASC, he will be presiding over the leading organization for academic and research criminologists in the U.S. and world. The ASC has over 4,000 members and publishes over 7 journals, including two of the top journals their fields. The organization's 2013 annual meeting ("Expanding the Core: Neglected Crimes, Groups, Causes and Policy Approaches") will be held in Atlanta. At a basic level, then, GST
essentially predicts that an individual felt strained, was
either successful or unsuccessful at adapting to the stress
    through coping mechanisms,
and if unsuccessful, resorted to any means necessary, including illegal, to
correct the original cause of the strain.

This theory best explains why crime occurs in Chicago.
In other places it's more because of lacking in the lower levels of Mazlow's Hierarchy.
In Chicago, the crime is more about self actualization (or the strain of it), since there's plenty of housing, food and fresh water that would otherwise make a criminal more ferral because of basic needs not being met.

The American Society of Criminology is definitely not the leading society for criminology in the world, and evidence for climate change being the dominant driver of crime is lacking. Unfortunately it looks like the American Society of Criminology, just like the APA, may have become politicised. It’s a shame.
