For too long, our EX Gear has been using gravity as a cheap alternative fuel source. With Jet's nomination, we will finally return to using air for our boards as Solaris intended. This way, traffic jams and unnatural disasters will be much less frequent in the still questionably legal world of hoverboard racing.
When I was a kid, I thought Riders was just alright and Zero Gravity was good. Turns out, it was just because I sucked at Riders and Zero Gravity was the easier game with the easier mechanics. My opinion really started shifting when I started watching others play the two games when I was older. The skill expression in OG Riders is so much higher and more varied, and I realized that that is what gives Riders its identity.
There will always....always be a part of me CONVINCED that Zero Gravity was a good sequel butchered in development by SEGA because they wanted a Sonic Riders game on the Wii. I think its why all the mechanics are dumbed down (less buttons on a wii-mote), why the entire game is much more automated (motion controls), and why all the tracks are boring hallways (so you don't get frustrated).
I should mention that the one thing that makes gravity control stand out from the drift in a more positive way is that you can use it to take alternate paths and shortcuts that are scattered all over the maps. Some, if my memory serves me right, can even lead to an elevated or branching part of the track. But take my word with a grain of salt because it has been a few years since I have played this game. But yeah, I agree with about everything else. Oh yeah, there is also Sonic Riders Regravitified, which is a mod for the game that makes it play a a bit more like the original. It's not the exact same, but perhaps you might get more of a kick out of that.
the coolest part of the gravity control I'd gotta say is how you can use it to turn in the air, all those side paths, and even upper paths, are accessible by using it in the air, and its just so cool. but yeah for ground control the drift is better, but in the air gravity control excels, that's where its cool. why they didn't just add more such areas to zero gravity for it and let us keep drift for when grounded idk, guess they didn't want it to over shadow it in anyway, so wanting this one to stand out and have more focus on the gravity stuff just gave us the gravity control.
Regravitified just has the issue of automation. It feels like you don't need to touch the controller for even half of the map. It is still way better than the original Zero G... But that is still below the first Riders. I do also like the gravity ring more than Rider's drift because it allows for more unique maps (not many racers can handle straight up 90 or 180 degree turns or flipping onto a wall.
The trick system in ZG has a tiny bit more depth than just pressing a button but it's really not much and might only apply to X rank tricks. So, there's two parts of what determines the trick you get; when you jump (right at the edge is best) and also what direction you're pushing the stick. The game tracks the cardinal direction you were mostly pushing the stick in for your last three tricks, and if you use the same one (e.g., held left two tricks ago and hold it for your next trick), then you will only get at-best an SS trick. It adds a bit more challenge since you need to mentally track what your last three direction inputs for tricks were, but it's still much simply than the original Riders trick system and probably inferior (I've only played ZG so I can't really speak on how well the original's trick system is, but Rider's trick system certainly looks like a better system than ZG's, especially since I don't think ZG's tells you about the direction thing and I had to learn it from a random TH-cam comment)
That explains my hazy, negative memory of the series and why I thought everyone was nostalgia crazy with Sonic Riders. Apparently I rented THIS game, not the original.

If they do make a new riders game, I hope the bring back the gravity mechanic and rebalance it. How? By making it a class similar to speed, flight, and power. Think about it. What were the 3 main types used for? Accessing exclusive shortcuts! What is the gravity mechanic used for? ACCESSING SHORTCUTS! Just that everyone can use it so it doesn’t feel special. If they restricted it to a new class type and refined it, the gravity mechanic could be super awesome in a new game!
I honestly enjoyed zero gravity more than the original and I say that because it felt like a more natural racing game where you have to really work for power ups and abilities
I actually hate Sonic Riders because it's too complicated of a game. Any time I ever won was left up to chance, and that luck ran out at Babylon Garden, so I never even beat the game.
and what kills me the most is that when I had the game when I was younger, I actually went through the gargantuan effort of maxing out all the missions in mission mode since I knew it would unlock Super Sonic like it did the original. I only did so even though I didn't like the game as much as original by a lot cause I, at the very least, wanted the power trip of trivializing every track in the game with Super Sonic like the original... I can't help but feel bad about ZG. It was so heavily softened for the sake of running on the Wii, which affected the other platforms' copies of the game by proxy. I have only played ZG out of the 3 despite owning free riders (free riders was so bad that i couldnt even operate the menus enough to enter a race. Thanks, Kinect). It was ok when you don't have the experience of it's predecessor, but not replayable in the slightest. Strangest part about it was how stable it actually was for a sonic game - I only ever encountered one bug on the heroes version of Gigan Rocks, and that was an instant speed cap glitch that happened when you got off the grind rail via falling instead of jumping off. Made that stage one of the most fun tracks in the game for me just due to how fast you could go through half of it.
levitating and repositioning in slow motion and following by slinging forward and literally flying and pushing aside obstacles to blast forward as the music shifted looked so stylish, but these really felt implemented like quick time events, like if a game gave you a new cool ability but its only use is breaking through a single specific obstacle would be better if it didn't overwrite the drift and boost, which was also the melee attack letting you beat up other riders and it was supposed to be the signature of extreme gear races, many of them expressing personality for each character (sonic uses his spin dash, tails spins a plug, jet wields a fan) the leveling up system would have been cool if it was more interesting but it was either small stat boosts, unlocking things that should be there already, or for some reason metamorphosing into a different gear category with no practical reason also I wished the story developed better and see it fit in the sonic lore, because it really feels like an alt timeline like the dark night which got a slightly better introduction and elaboration on a personal level most of the gameplay performance feels like the game is constantly poorly making tweening frames in a failed attempt to look smooth, plus I never liked the motion controls, there's no feedback to imitate what it pretends to be
That is a lie being propagated by an Eggmanland-led social media misinformation campaign. Mr. the Hawk admits no wrongdoing and has no recollection of that event ever taking place.
Gravity control also has exclusive shortcuts that are pretty sick. Like at 7:48 if you GC towards the 2 roads above you, you land and take those paths instead. Or at 16:48 as well as 16:53 as you use GC the objects that get lifted are used to break the giant fans as you fly in afterwards. Very creative for map designs. Still prefer Riders though, for pretty much every reason stated in this video.
Dont get me wrong your right, but the game is kinda fun when you really start abusing the mechanics, plus the gameplay you have in the background is not doing it justice like theres plenty of cool shortcuts you can do by using the gravity gimmick in mid trick or certain areas, honestly just give the game a drift button and an actual dash and im 80% sure it'd be likeable, oh and you skipped over the fact you get super sonic for completing all the shitty missions, which super sonic is kinda just as bad as he was in the first one x), good video tho ^^
Yeah, he missed all of the gravity ring shortcuts. And the boost in Regravitized does help the game a TON. The main issue remaining is just the weak feeling of control for the boards and how many of the shortcuts put you on auto-pilot. Even in Riders 1 the shortcuts had you leaning or re-directing to not fall off.
Fair point, then again even in the original you had to rely on the drifting mechanic alot if your really going fast, so i feel like the turning isn't all that much more sluggish, just alot more noticeable due to the tracks and lack of the fast, tight, and accurate drift mechanics of the first one.
drift is HIDDEN in the game, you need a "whell" type board , jump and hold jump while turning to start a drift and just like gravity control its useless because jumping on your own makes you lose even more speed. the entire game is "lets make sonic riders easy mode"
I can Low-key understand why you feel this way, especially in comparison to the original. But I still think you're being a little harsh. Like you calling the Ui a literal eyesore is just ridiculous. I personally like ZG. The original Riders is definitely better but I feel like the margin between the 2 is not a big as you say. I give them 8/10 and 9/10 respectively. To me it feels like they tried to do so much new with the sequel, to the point where it lost so much of what made the original so great. What's here is pretty good, but its not really what a sequel to anything should be. I suggest you check out GDubA's video on this game. Lastly, I'd like you to check out a mod for this game called "Better ZG". It aims to do exactly what the name suggests. Most cases it's just changing a few variables, but it does a lot, and I think it's worth a try.
I actually didn't even play this game, but looking at the footage I always found this one looked so lacking compared to the first one. A big thing to me is that the main gimmick with the gravity looks like it kills all momentum, it's too stop and go. Just how you come to a complete stop, hang in the air for a bit with the screen blurred and music cut out, and then go again looks so unfun to me. I can see how in theory a "you slow down for a bit, then get a sudden big burst of speed" might sound fun, but it doesn't look or feel like a "big burst of speed" here to me, so it just seems like you just slow down a bunch. But I didn't even play this game like I said, so take all of this with a pinch of salt, but that's what it always felt like to me watching footage of it. Also I didn't even notice it but yes, this game lost SO much of the style and overall presentation from the first game.
It was amazing that I saw the assassination joke coming, thought “oh man a Donald Trump joke would be wild,” then noticed when this was uploaded right as I start hearing “FIIIIGHT FIIIIGHT FIIIIGHT” I fucking lost it
i only realized this video was new at the Jet the Trump illustration IT IS AWESOME HOLY SHIT also i am RELIEVED that there are other sane people who can admit this game just sucks i am SO tired of people pretending it's fine SOLELY for the music and that gravity is actually something different. thank you.
i only got to play ZG like at least 10 years after i started playing Riders while also looking for it EVERYWHERE. i vividly remember how let down i felt when i finally got to play ZG. it was so bad it even made me question how good Riders was in the first place. such a shame.
As if Jet the Hawk wasn't already a self-absorbed idiot. (fitting that he's also a felon if you consider him being a thief) (the video was great. this is not a jab.)
fortunately i was lucky enough to not know this game was a sequel when i played it and loved the game, 100% everything and got super sonic and then went out of my way to GRIND all the expensive gears at the shop. the amount of tournaments i did.... never again. my take on it is that its a fine game if u didnt know sonic riders existed or played it first and then sonic riders next.
i appreciate the change to jump mechanics and nothing else. i wish tricks still required input, i wish we had an air gauge for boosts. every other change made is for the worse too. but on god i prefer just pressing a close to the tip of a jump. ive 100%ed Riders like 4 times including mission mode and i literally still cannot jump with any consistency. i know this is a skill issue but just jumping at the pinnacle of a ramp is so much more intuitive.
I get where you're coming from. Honestly if they just changed the jump itself instead of the whole trick system, I could see that actually being an interesting change. I'm in the same boat with the Riders jumping, I've played that game to death and I still have a hard time getting the jumps right consistently
When I was little, I loved Sonic Riders. I beat it 100% once and a couple times partially. I wanted to play Zero Gravity SO BAD, but I never had a PS2 nor did I have a PC that could emulate it. After a decade or more and well into my adulthood, I finally got a proper gaming PC that could emulate the PS2. I was SO DISAPPOINTED by Zero Gravity. The game is SO MUCH WORSE! I wish I could judge it on it's own merit. The gravity thing slowing everything down and disturbing the music up EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU USE IT is sooo annoying. No boosting, no manual tricks, no tornado traps, no drifting. Such a big downgrade in every single regard. And the first level? So ugly LOL! I thought something was wrong with my game. Why would they choose the urine filter smog city instead of a clear sky or night level is beyond me.
Zero Gravity being what it is is extremely unfortunate. It's one of those cases where I love everything about it except the part where I have to play it. It's art direction is incredible and has influenced my own aesthetic tastes massively and outright improves on the original's stylistic ideas (at least in regards to its in-game presentation. The lack of the original's stylised character illustrations is indeed missed. Massively disagree on the menus though. I think they look great). It's soundtrack is one of the best. It's story is shockingly tight as far as Sonic stories go (aside from the silly disconnect between the racetracks being loops and the narrative context rarely lining up with that) (also yes, the Babylonians being aliens was set up by the plot. The whole game's story is explicitly about that fact. This is not out of nowhere even a little bit). But then you actually pick up the controller and everything that was good about the original game is just gone without a trace, replaced with admittedly cool ideas, but ideas which hardly get used in nearly as fluid or interesting ways as the mechanics they exist in place of.
I'm voting for Saaanic for president because I always do and not voting for Saaaanic is absurd when I've already committed to the build. You think I'm gonna respec? At my age!?
I used to like Sonic Riders Zero Gravity but then I played the first Sonic Riders which was marginally better SRZG does have the better ost tho imo so there’s that I guess
Dumbed down & slow is why I don’t like the game. Also hate that I can’t do my own tricks and can’t attack players on my own either, which makes me dislike it even more
I disagree on the first having more interesting tracks. Aside from long corridors the gravity ring absolutely SLAPS in how they can design levels. What other racing game lets you do literal 90 or 180 degree turns? How many let you radically shift dimensions (to stick to walls or ceiling without a slow MK8 style transition), how many let you mid-air change directions to reach a new shortcut? If you took the mechanics of Riders 1 and slapped on a modified gravity ring (where it doesn't completely halt momentum), you would get an absolute banger. Unfortunately everything aside from the tracks and music is trash in this game.
I’ll be honest, I think I like Free Riders more than Zero Gravity. Not saying it’s better necessarily, but I like the gameplay more (when it works), as it is closer to the original Riders: you have to think more, jumping is not automatic; steering is harder; tricks are harder to do, but are also more satisfying; and the level design is better with more branching pathways, with more shortcuts for different character types. It requires more input from the player overall. I even like the cutscenes more: I’d rather have visual novels than 3d models just standing around and expositing. Plus the cgi opening is really good. Though, I do think this is better than TSR as at least it had cool spectacle, so I don’t consider it to be the Forces of Sonic racing games / spinoffs. I do like some of the story, but as you said, it doesn't fit, and is missed potential I feel. I think the problem is that they took the criticism that the first game was too hard way too literally, so they dumbed the mechanics down too much. Let’s face it, the first game should have had a better tutorial mode that was not hidden, but in the end, I’d rather take that over Zero Gravity because while that did have a tutorial, you didn’t really need it. So Free Riders did this the best with the most in depth tutorial. But yeah, it's a shame Free Riders didn't have a controller option as it would have been a pretty respectable 3rd entry in the series for 7th gen consoles. Speaking of which, why didn't Zero Gravity get released on the ps3 and xbox 360? I guess they were marketing mainly for the wii with motion controls, but then it did get a ps2 port, so I still find it strange. And this is all coming from someone who grew up with this game.
I think a lot of this game's problems stemmed from one source; The Nintendo-fucking-Wii. Sega had a really bad habit of trying to capitalize on a console gimmick by releasing Sonic games that made use of that gimmick, often to mixed results (Secret rings had terrible controls because of this & Free Riders was unplayable due to problems baked into the Kinect itself. Zero Gravity was made with the Wiimote in mind with is why the gameplay is so dumbed down compared to Riders 1 which was on GameCube & PS2
@@RokanVoid Yes I know that but I think it's obvious that the Wiimote was so deeply baked into the gameplay that it resulted in the the PS2 port feeling dumbed down due to the PS2 controller having more buttons than the Wiimote & the gameplay not being made for it
Even back in the day, I hated the change to the trick system compared to the first game. It's just so much more boring to simply time the jump rather than charge it and move the stick in whatever directions you're able to. Another ZG change that I found a little jarring was how they switched up the character types. Tying it to the gear type and the on-race upgrade system kinda makes characters feel... less unique? There's even gears that don't let you take _any_ type shortcut, and I didn't see much use for them back then... I still spent a lot of time on this game as a kid, and I don't hate the game even today! It's fine, just a big step down from the original... The music in ZG absolutely slaps. The main theme 'Ungravitify' and the ZG version of 'Catch Me If You Can' are the top bangers out of this game's ost, but it's all fantastic stuff I think.
I totally agree on the character types. Sure, Riders had some unique gears that let you use multiple shortcut types like the Omnipotence, but those were very special and expensive. Plus they tended to have bad stats. I liked having different characters that felt like they really excelled at different things.
I only played Zero Gravity as a kid and loved it. I finally was able to play the original riders a few years ago and can never go back to zg because of how dumbed down it was
Im fully with you, cant stand this game when its so much worse than what came before it. WHich is a coincidence because the same can be said of its sequel... somehow.

the leveling up system would have been cool if it was more interesting but it was either small stat boosts, unlocking things that should be there already, or for some reason metamorphosing into a different gear category with no practical reason
also I wished the story developed better and see it fit in the sonic lore, because it really feels like an alt timeline like the dark night which got a slightly better introduction and elaboration
on a personal level most of the gameplay performance feels like the game is constantly poorly making tweening frames in a failed attempt to look smooth, plus I never liked the motion controls, there's no feedback to imitate what it pretends to be

I like both equally. Both have pros and cons
Fair point, then again even in the original you had to rely on the drifting mechanic alot if your really going fast, so i feel like the turning isn't all that much more sluggish, just alot more noticeable due to the tracks and lack of the fast, tight, and accurate drift mechanics of the first one.
drift is HIDDEN in the game, you need a "whell" type board , jump and hold jump while turning to start a drift
and just like gravity control its useless because jumping on your own makes you lose even more speed.
the entire game is "lets make sonic riders easy mode"
Yes, GDubA's video is a great video to check out.
Video thumbnail goes hard af. I need the file for it stat.
i inherited this game but have never played it
It was amazing that I saw the assassination joke coming, thought “oh man a Donald Trump joke would be wild,” then noticed when this was uploaded right as I start hearing “FIIIIGHT FIIIIGHT FIIIIGHT”
I fucking lost it
i only realized this video was new at the Jet the Trump illustration IT IS AWESOME HOLY SHIT
also i am RELIEVED that there are other sane people who can admit this game just sucks i am SO tired of people pretending it's fine SOLELY for the music and that gravity is actually something different.
thank you.
i only got to play ZG like at least 10 years after i started playing Riders while also looking for it EVERYWHERE. i vividly remember how let down i felt when i finally got to play ZG. it was so bad it even made me question how good Riders was in the first place. such a shame.
NOOOOOO JRAGON DIDNT SHARE IT ON TWT I WAS GONNA RTWT

I want jet the hawk being president flanked by crustaceans as my computer background. 😮
jragon_breath on X/Instagram!
As if Jet the Hawk wasn't already a self-absorbed idiot. (fitting that he's also a felon if you consider him being a thief)
(the video was great. this is not a jab.)
Keep making good content Mr crab. I’m glad to have found your channel
fortunately i was lucky enough to not know this game was a sequel when i played it and loved the game, 100% everything and got super sonic and then went out of my way to GRIND all the expensive gears at the shop. the amount of tournaments i did.... never again. my take on it is that its a fine game if u didnt know sonic riders existed or played it first and then sonic riders next.
i appreciate the change to jump mechanics and nothing else. i wish tricks still required input, i wish we had an air gauge for boosts. every other change made is for the worse too. but on god i prefer just pressing a close to the tip of a jump. ive 100%ed Riders like 4 times including mission mode and i literally still cannot jump with any consistency. i know this is a skill issue but just jumping at the pinnacle of a ramp is so much more intuitive.
I get where you're coming from. Honestly if they just changed the jump itself instead of the whole trick system, I could see that actually being an interesting change. I'm in the same boat with the Riders jumping, I've played that game to death and I still have a hard time getting the jumps right consistently
Just wait until you get to Sonic Free Riders
Sonic riders zero gravity is the best riders game, ion care
I'm voting for Saaanic for president because I always do and not voting for Saaaanic is absurd when I've already committed to the build.
You think I'm gonna respec? At my age!?
I used to like Sonic Riders Zero Gravity but then I played the first Sonic Riders which was marginally better
SRZG does have the better ost tho imo so there’s that I guess
Bravo Soda the Crab
Music slaps though
Dumbed down & slow is why I don’t like the game. Also hate that I can’t do my own tricks and can’t attack players on my own either, which makes me dislike it even more
You sound like LS Mark.
Yea your geeking , it’s better in every way
What the heck is this thumbnail 😂
Using Emmeryn for the Gravity explanation is vile 💀
"Gravity Dive"? No, that's the "Was I wrong then"
@@SodaCrab Emmeryn does the Gravity Dive better than Zero Gravity does it LMAO, she should’ve been a secret unlockable character
powerful thumbnail
You're entitled to your opinion, but why the thumbnail?
Bro Jet suffered for your sins, be greatful
Because I endorse Jet the Hawk for president, of course!
Bro you’re entitled to your opinion, but why the dumbass comment?
@@Cleept not nice
This game is a W
I know you did not portray Jet as Trump
ZG was also on playstation tho.
Yea, obviously this one is the worst in the series
Right?
Yeah thankfully there was never a third game and this is as bad as it got!!
I only played Zero Gravity as a kid and loved it. I finally was able to play the original riders a few years ago and can never go back to zg because of how dumbed down it was
What the hell is this thumbnail and why we're you the guy who made the pokemon platinum every challenge video
If you want a better experience just play regravitified. Personally, I actually enjoyed this game. I still prefer the first one more.
hop off sonic riders peak gravity
still better than ring racers
Boo I disagree, now allow me to actually watch your video
You forgot the "watch"
someone finally said it
BASED
Im fully with you, cant stand this game when its so much worse than what came before it. WHich is a coincidence because the same can be said of its sequel... somehow.

Adore the original, but have literally nothing to say about Zero Gravity.
It's kind of nothing (except for the goat soundtrack)
