    Hey Everyone,
    *Here is my review of the first season of Brave New World, the new Peacock Series. I say a 7 to 7.5 out of 10. Honestly had way lower expectations, didn't even think I would like it in the least bit, so was pleasantly surprised there.*
    *Do forgive me if there is a detail I have missed here on there, it has literally been ages since I read this thing, like 25 years or something*
    Let me know what you thought of the first season.

    One more reason for why they changed the plot is Huxley himself, if I remember correctly later in life he said that he regretted the original pessimistic ending and he would have written a different, more optimistic one had he been given a chance, because he believed that even though it's hard to behave free within the systems people should still try doing it.

    • @WhattheGeek
      @WhattheGeek  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I never heard of that bit, but they did not just change the ending, they killed away some key details, and it is understandable by the way, different times, different stories.

    I always find it interesting the shade a book can cast over its tv show adaptation. So far every bad review for this show is rooted entirely in the idea that it didn't stay true to the original but as someone who had no idea about the original or even that it was coming out I loved it. I saw a poster, decided to watch it and was pretty interested in the world that was built and how it was shot.

      I don't think this is addressed at me, because I am sure I gave it a very good review. I would have still though had the same problems with some aspects, but in the end I think overall it was decent.

      I would imagine it's likely because the changes made to the show run entirely counter to Huxley's thesis, which begs the question of why his work was adapted in the first place. It makes sense with a film like Starship Troopers, where Heinlein's original novella is effectively being parodied to voice the opinion that jingoism is...bad

      It's been decades since I read the book so there is so much I didn't remember - even though I've been quoting out of it since the 70's - "Ending is better than mending". Consumerism. I'm currently working toward being a minimalist and that slogan and what it represents stays with me. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I think about our trash all over the planet, in our oceans, in our wild life's stomachs and eventually in ours in the form of micro plastics. Yeah, I guess that is what Debbie Downer would add to the conversation. Oh well.

    Great review, but you forgot to mention two important aspects from the novel; first being the downright religious worship of Henry Ford by that New World society (it's all over the novel) and second, the overly satirical undertones of the novel, something lacking (for better or worse) in this very good TV adaptation. Plus, John and Linda lived with Native Americans, the "savage park" was located in their reservation area, the novel also identifies almost the whole world being in this state of New Order, this TV series is unclear with that, it seems it's just this one city of New London? There is also a partial similarity in how John ends up at the very end, in the book he chooses a reclusive life within the borders of New World society, living in a lighthouse and hunting in nearby woods, often daydreaming of Lenina (and eventualy, commiting suicide). TV version of John ends up living reclusive in an abandoned building, fishing in nearby river and also daydreaming of Lenina...

    • @WhattheGeek
      @WhattheGeek  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I did actually mention that close to the end of the video, didn't refer to it as worship, but you get the jest of it at the end of the video.
      I agree they never mentioned the World State in its entirety but I would say it was kind of implied with the long train ride to the Epsilons homes, with them starting the journey at night and ending there closer to the morning.

    I walked into the series with my heart held in my hand as the Novel is one of my all-time favorites..
    instead i got a GOT/Matrix/Westworld mashup, and i'm sure the producers want to capitalize on that..because, why not, it's the Netflix era..(God help us should they decide to make a 1984 series..)
    Don't get me wrong the series is nice, art direction is cool, and the modernity touch was good, and of course the now ubiquitous themes of 'equality' 'rebellion' and 'control' are there to remind us that we live in turbulent times and a new era is dawning on us with all of its uncertainty.
    but despite all that, i truly would have wished that they had made a smaller and more cohesive short series and remain as true to the Novel as possible..
    all that said, i enjoyed most of it..

    I think your rating of 7.5 out of 10 is fair enough. I gotta say tho, I was expecting more from the moment I saw Grant Morrinson put his name on it. I mean, the book has some dated premises, but overall it was way ahead of its time. I felt like there was no protagonist in the series. For a moment it was Bernard, then it was John, then Lenina... it kept changing. John was not interesting enough and I have my thoughts about the actor... I think he should feel more like he was designed to represent the viewer in the story, but to me it felt like Lenina did a better job at that most of the time. Bernard was all over the place... he's a nice guy, he's a bad guy, he's a loser... the last one defines him better I guess. Helm was my favorite character, Hannah progressed so well during the show. Anyway, they left it in a cliffhanger, hope it comes back for a second season and that we get to see more of GM's mind into it.

    Was a pretty great adoption of the book and also was pretty surprised by it, did´t like there own matrix plot which kinda makes no sense where the savages come from and that this was even somehow a plot point where Jon burned it down because he is from outside makes just no sense to me and seems like they somehow needed to fit this just in. Otherwise from the world building it was pretty amazing and a faithful modernization of the book i think which even added extra debts to the whole story.

    My favorite line of the show-
    "This is my body, and I want to be the only one in it."
    It really drives what they go through having to be shared with everyone else, they have no autonomy over their own body.
    I think they pushed the orgies to try to desensitize the audience to them, just like the residents are.
    Lenina was clearly suffering from PTSD, but in a culture without violence or even natural deaths nobody knows what's going on with her and nobody can help her except John, since he's lived with those things.
    I loved the show, I've watched it over a dozen times in the last year. I just started a rewatch with a friend, and he was drawn in really quickly with the incredibly high quality of the production ($100 million), and now he's obsessed too.
    Also, the soundtrack was just outstanding, both the original compositions and the music they used were just phenomenal. Several of the songs get stuck in my head often.

  • @syrales5539
    @syrales5539 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    clockwork orange claims the flaw can be conditioned away. deltas would have a huge conditioning preventing them to become violent imo, unlike here where a few sentences were enough to trigger them. there should have been a series of events instead of "cant be conditioned away.." the deltas also just got away with resisting orders, st that would have huge consequences, like preparing to take them to reconditioning with beta force troops or st.
    then the mass gang bang scene was pathetic, john ended up in the middle just like that and acted like a stupid girl. and there are too many pointless intimate scenes dragging time. also, the first few episodes are a bit boring.

    • @WhattheGeek
      @WhattheGeek  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The first few episodes are introductory, laying the ground, I know we are kind of getting into everything being quick and meaningless and less time consuming even at the cost of the story, but I prefer things being done right.
      Clockwork Orange is a story of its own, it does not have to necessarily mean that every story written has to consider it a science because it is not.
      I agree one the sexual stuff dragging, I personally thought it was a bit crude and too much the way they just had it every bit of the way.
      However though, John acting the way he did made him a lot closer to the novel counterpart than he ended up being by the end of the season's run so I am not complaining there.

    • @syrales5539
      @syrales5539 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WhattheGeek i think you can introduce better than this. introductions dont have to be boring at all. i personally think theyre potentially more interesting than the action parts fe. especially in dystopian settings, where whole cultures are portrayed.
      i agree other stories dont matter, but that wasnt my point. the collapse is one of the most interesting parts, but cheaply done imo. well acted, but its like i tried to explain already. they can easily brainwash a beta, but those resisting deltas are too difficult to adjust, ok. and just let them do their thing then and dont expect any trouble, especially since its been pointed out that they know that within the rules of this story, unlike co, violence cant be counterconditioned. ok.
      the novel counterpart of john is the biggest weakness of the og story imo. he is supposed to be a free independent thinker. but hes just an annoying brat. shakespear btw introduced a lot of vocab to the english language. it isnt an exageration to call him the father of the language. he is the shaker of the spear, mover of culture. some say he was sir francis drake and one of the biggest geniuses of all time. but john in the story even lacks common sense.

    the 80s bbc tv version is leaps and bounds ahead of this, very very dated, but leaps and bounds ahead. this was so hollywood, reading the book you envision an r18 psychological literal orgy of the senses, instead you get mild sex being depicted and inaccuracies that will just make you mad, especially if you are a fan of the book. i think it would have made a better manga, like snowpeircer (not that it was made by manga but depicted much better than brave new world)

    The show remained true to the concept of Huxley. The problem to a stable society is humans. So kill them all. That's an interesting conclusion. I recently read the book and was quite moved or let's say intrigued by it. For me the essence of the book lies in the dialogue between mond and savage. In that brief dialogue, Huxley explored his own observations about humanity and it's insatiable appetite for faith, hope and the unattainable. I think this series in many ways has appropriated how gender was perceived back in the 1930s, while still managing the key plot points. The betrayal that John witnesses from lenina, felt more real in this series. However, it didn't manage to shock me like the book did. The fact that John realises his need to be free is futile in a perfect Utopia. And hence kills himself. That sombre tragedy had immense poetry behind it. While the series does a fantastic job of staying true to so many things, that shock is something I sincerely hoped that the series would have tried to justify. Alas.
    Feels like a Soma holiday.

    Maybe it's because it's on Peacock but I'm surprised this show didn't get more hype. BNW was one of my favorite books growing up and I'm always curious when someone makes an adaption to the screen. I was looking forward to this when I saw the trailer but completely forgot about it until I found out recently that Comcast includes Peacock.
    I thought the cast did an outstanding job, the writing was terrific, and, while it might not follow the book beat for beat (though it has been a long time since I read it), I think the characters and theme stayed mostly true. I had my doubts but I really enjoyed season 1.
    And... apparently it's cancelled. Can't say I'm surprised with NBC and Fox always cancelling good Sci-Fi before their time. Oh well. Season 1 still makes for a decent standalone mini-series. Originally thought "how can they make this into a TV show?" prior to watching it. After finishing the season though, I was looking forward to where they might go in the future. Too bad we'll never know, just like the book I guess. Time to reread the book...

    I didn't like the way they changed the end. Other than that I loved this adaptation. When i look at an adaptation I don't mind changes IF the changes show that the writers still understand the themes of the original. My managed to maintain the farcical soap opera aspect of the novel, while at the same time showing that the situation here is 100% serious and that the farcicality comes from the programmed shallowness of their own society which is designed to keep their lives trivial and simple.

      I disagree that they understood and expressed the central theme of the original novel. Huxley may have later come to regret the pessimistic ending, but it perfectly illustrates the level of control that the central government has over everyone's lives, including the "savages" and John. Having one man come in and radically change the system effectively negates the entire body of work of the world order, as their work to genetically and psychologically engineer a utopia would fail because...reasons. In the original work the lower castes would never have rebelled because they simply would have been mentally and psychologically unable to understand the concept. They wouldn't have been so zealous to "reclaim" their rights because they had never had them in the first place. In fact, John tries to do precisely that after Linda dies, throwing massive quantities of soma out a window (IIRC), and everyone Helmholtz panics and desperately tries to stop him. Even at the end, Helmholtz is put on an island of other "free" citizens, rather than cheaply disposed of as he would have been in a work like 1984. Simply put, the most frightening aspect of the novel is that the rebellion presented in the show would be genuinely impossible, as the state has truly conquered freedom and dissent.

    The message I took away was that a system that doesn't enforce its own rules will crumble (pretty sure that wasn't the point of the story)

      The message of the novel was, capitalism will keep growing until supply and demand will be the only thing that matters, people won't.

      @@WhattheGeek you have got it completely wrong. this is about the freak convergence of capitalism AND communism. the pursuit of consumption and production coupled with mass conformity. The use of vast un-thinking, un-feeling communes that are only units of labour.

      Well it is based on the novel with the same name, it just released its entire first season on Peacock in one go and it is pretty good, not perfect but pretty good.

      It is not, in any way, similar to The 100. They're two very different shows. But this show is good and worth watching even though I'm a little disappointed that it wasn't a faithful adaptation of the book.

    Really, the changes to the story make it better. John's mother being a grossly overweight and disgusting as she died is not conducive to a good video. Other than that change, the story seems to be mostly faithful to the book.

    • @WhattheGeek
      @WhattheGeek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not mostly, but well I didn't have a problem with most of the changes.

      There's a point to her being obese and relapsing into soma, though. She contrasts with the people who stayed in New London, as they effectively look young and healthy until their execution at 60, as well as illustrates that someone who is indoctrinated from birth to behave hedonistically would likely not be able to control herself and end up severely obese. Giving her a noble death, sacrificing herself for her son, also completely removes her act of distancing herself from John up to the point of her death, choosing instead to full all her time with empty pleasures rather than with the son she raised

    As a huge fan of the book, I honestly thought they brought it into the modern perspective. The book is really dated and when you are adapting something so dated you need to change some parts of it. I feel like the drifts from the book are rather justified and they did them really well in my opinion. Overall I'd give it an 8 or 9 out of 10

    • @WhattheGeek

    I really wish TV series wouldn't be so complicated that it needs a youtube video to explain it. I think this is a case of needing to read the book first to understand the TV series.
