I learned "False Hearted Lover's Blues" from a 1927 recording of Moran Lee "Dock" Boggs. The melody is borrowed from the earlier ballad, "Hustling Gamblers," also known as "Country Blues." Other notable recordings have been contributed by Doc Watson, Ralph Stanley, Levon Helm, Riley Baugus, and Hank III.
My instrument is an 1888 Thomposon & Odell "The Luscomb" banjo tuned ~ f♯DGAD.

False hearts have been my downfall
Pretty women have been my craze,
I know my false hearted lover
Will drive me to my lonesome grave.
They'll bite the hand that feeds them
Spend all the money you can save,
From your heartstrings weave silk garters
Build a dog house on your grave.
Ragged clothes falling from my body
The wolves howling 'round my door,
Let the man who wants my darling girl
Feel the bite of my forty four.
Corn whisky has wrecked my body
But women have wrecked my mind,
I've roamed this wide world over
Peace on earth I cannot find.
Take warning you fine young ladies
If your love and honor you have sold,
These men will have no use for you
When your black hair turns to gold.
When my earthly stay is over
Sink my dead body in the sea,
Go tell my false hearted lover
That the whales will fuss over me.

Please keep these songs coming our way. Such a rich tradition of banjo and I've pretty much put up the picks and switched to claw hammer. Something magical about the droning melody coming from that ol open back... Much appreciated ... 👍🏻

It sounds pre- industrial in good way. Like a foot pedal sewing machine. The rhythm is in the forefront and the melody punches through holes the rhythm opened up.

How you sing and play, I love how you put your whole self in to it.
Alot of your songs i have listened too in dark and hard times. Have saved me in many ways.
As the saying gos Music calms The Savage Beast, but it also helps kill it, sadly alot of people I talk too dont understand what I'm trying to say.
And that's sad if a generation doesn't truly understand the power of music.
    Keep on Truckin 😎👍🏻🤘🍺🇨🇦

@@CliftonHicksbanjo I'm very much looking forward to it. I'm compelled to add that I greatly appreciate what you've done and shared with banjo heritage, videos/lessons/tabs. I strung a guitar in banjo tuning and am having a blast learning the songs until I take a crack at building a mountain banjo. If the world is lucky, many more will find your music and lessons.

Clifton, what type of banjo head do you use to get the great quality tone? Renaissance, Fiberskin, Hyde? Keep up the good work!

    • @CliftonHicksbanjo
      @CliftonHicksbanjo  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

The best sounding banjo heads are pure white calfskin. I avoid goatskin and _really_ dislike Fiberskyn. The best thing for most people is to use a plain Remo frosted top.

Been wanting to pick up a banjo since summer , now that my dues are all in order there’s nothing to hold me back now ! 🪕
“Banjo on my knee” was the song that did it for me 👍 hands down you are the top reasons as to why im choosing this specific instrument over a guitar 🪕
Any suggestions as to what good solid banjo to start off with ?

Hello Clifton, when it comes to nylon strings, is ist useful to use guitar strings instead because of the thickness? Saw another guy on YT who does it. What do you recommend? Best wishes from Berlin, Germany

You can also use fishing line.
