Trespassing Cyclists on the West Somerset Railway

  • While waiting to film a train into Dunster, I was amazed to see what appeared a be a boy and his dad cycling along the middle of the line towards the crossing at Dunster. It was in no way obvious how they managed to get there, and whether they had a reason to be on the line or not. Since the camera was set up, I felt I should film it to show how stupid some people can be when it comes to railways, whether it be on a preserved line or the national network. As you see I follow up the clip with what arrived less than 5 minutes later.
The video was featured on the Somerset County Gazette website and also made the front page of the paper, with the headline 'Lives On The Line'. www.somersetcou...

    Ways to fail at parenting
    1. Hitting your child
    2. Never supporting them
    3. Letting them explore on a working railway where trains regularly operate.

And yet if they had been hit by the train, they would have happily put the blame on the driver, ignoring the fact they were trespassing.
Sickens me to think, that the kid could potentially have an early grave, because he knows no better now than to cycle along a railway line because his dads assumes its perfectly safe.

Well it's not soooo bad, as it is only a 5mph speed limit, and the train drivers have to blow their horn before the crossing, and they are going towards the direction of travel so they will see the train as it crawls forward at walking speed.

Apart from the act of trespass, when they leave the railway line at the crossing, the father(?)/adult goes in front of the child to go through the barrier first leaving the child struggling to get his bike off the track! The two shown on this clip were very lucky indeed. Some years ago, there was a fatality on the railway not far from this spot. A woman had gone onto the track to retrieve her dog but failed to see or hear the approaching train. Despite whistling and braking hard the woman was struck and killed. The railway is not a plaything. It says "Beware of trains" for a reason, y'know.

Whilst walking up the track on the old Garw Valley Line, I managed to walk on to operational track. There were no signs, easy access, and it was very misleading because it was connected to old, overgrown track which was not in use. You would have assumed it was not in use. We also saw other people walking the track who thought it wasn't in use. Although I don't see how could easily end up on the WSR.
