BEST Love Fest EVER!! Ruby is your emotional support dog, Andy. Guilt definitely creeps in when you're not paying attention to them. But it's so important to teach them it is okay to be alone and independent. It's great that you crate her when you're doing the show. This way she has space and time to herself like a big girl. Teaching her to be alone will help prevent separation anxiety. I love that you're using enrichment toys like the Kong in the Snuffle mats! The dog next door barked right on cue! LMFAO OMG high-five in "My wife", voice was hilarious! And... Andy, I love your hair in the One Skin ad! You went somewhere fancy lol

Believe me, you do not want to deal with separation anxiety down the road! Giving Ruby boundaries and crate/den time will teach her to be confident and independent which is the healthiest, happiest thing for all of you!

I’ve always been a cat lover myself. In my early 20s I adopted 2 kittens and had them for 16 years. They both passed last year but since they were old I was prepared. Nevertheless, to love a furry child for this long and loose it was devastating. Meanwhile we moved to a house and my kids (8 and 5) wanted a dog but I would never buy. I started searching the rescues for few months as well. We finally came upon a dog and knew she was the one. The agency loved our story and few months later suggested another adoption. We now have 2 loving dogs and couldn’t be happier. Rescue is best!!!

Absolutely. Crate training is very good for dogs and you should do it right from day 1. It becomes their safe space and they actually enjoy it - it's not a punishment. And it keeps your dog safe if you have to go out and are unsure what they could get in to.

I smiled so much watching the two of you interact with Ruby. I have been curious, because I thought that since you adopted Ruby, Andy looks happier than he ever has before. I also love that you are experiencing the most amazing unconditional love, and connecting it to your own relationship with raw honest comments. I adored this podcast so much. I agree with both of you that I meet the nicest people in Hoboken, walking or just sitting on a bench with my mini aussie. (Andy..also very smart dog.) My Nova gives me joy all day long. I also have a loving rescued cat, who is in love with my dog and they now groom each other during the day. They walk around my apartment together and go from room to room. I absolutely love everything you do, but this was actually a very touching podcast, where you both revealed a lot about yourselves. Your love is remarkable.

Sometimes we'll say, "OMG look at the dog, she's so cute!" and everyone looks over-and the dog is just sitting there like a regular dog-but we think everything she does is cute. When Sharleen talked about her feelings 2 weeks into having a puppy, she was describing exactly what I felt like my first couple months postpartum; I felt all those thoughts and emotions about myself and my human child. That's interesting!

Years ago I went through a long period of depression due to an injury. We had never had a dog but I did babysit a friend's Boston Terrier a few times. I decided to get one. Molly was exactly what I needed. I was her "rescue". A gift from the Lord. We had her for 13 1/2 years when she passed suddenly one night. She has been gone almost 4 years now and I am still missing her when I think of how much joy she brought into our home and how fun it was to spoil her the way you both are doing with Ruby. oh my gosh....of course I've watched all of your episodes...some more than once and love you guys, but now we are 'dog cousins'. I've belonged to rescue shelters for over 26 years. Both my husband and I said we should never get a dog until we retire, only cats. I was a flight attendant. After 911 I decided this was not the fabulous job I signed up for. Long story short, I took some time off and went to our ski place in sun Valley. At the trailhead there was a booth "hike with a shelter dog'. I inquired and said 'I only do cats' (yeah right). I fell in love with the puppy they assigned me to walk. LOVE at first sight. I retired and so did my husband. Best thing that ever happened to us. By the way the litter was born on 911. After 2 large dogs, my rescue group called me and said they needed fosters for puppies that were taken from an abusive breeder. We fostered her and her two puppies. The day after our first night with her, he said we should adopt her. She sits on my lap as I type. Looks like Ruby's clone. An oodle mix. She doesn't bark either. What a Godsend. We are much older and knew our next dog would be small. I thought I loved my husband before adopting....but fell in love with him all over again when I saw how he cared for our fabulous rescues. ALL great dogs by the way.

I really appreciate Sharleen that you consistently remarked on how this must be if you have a human child, because yes - it is like this but x 100. That includes the mum guilt, the indescribable love that you will only understand if you have a child, how they teach you to receive love (I still struggle sometimes to compute just how much my 3 year old loves me so unconditionally and purely and in such a forgiving way), how they make you look at the world differently, how they change the dynamic of your relationship and even how they bring you into connection more with other people! All of these feelings and experiences are applicable to having a child, but to a much much stronger degree. I can see how having a dog is good practice for children :)

    • @heidil851
      @heidil851 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@organiclady You've misunderstood my comment, and seem a bit triggered - I'm sorry if it has upset you. I was simply reiterating the fair comparisons Sharleen hinted at between having dogs and kids. I was not at all "trying to convince people that having children is the best thing ever." More so affirming that it is incredibly difficult for similar reasons and also rewarding for similar reasons. Becoming a mum has been the hardest challenge of my life, in large part because of some of the things Sharleen mentions about dog ownership. The guilt! (And she's talking about going out to dinner and leaving a dog at home, but mum guilt is maybe sending a child to nursery to be raised by others because you have to work but knowing they'd much rather be with you, or knowing you should be playing with the child more but just wanting space); the impact on relationships! My husband and I have the same thing Andy and Sharleen describe, ie having to remember to also pay attention to each other. I see a lot of myself in Sharleen and miss my own time and space a lot. But then there are the great things too - children bring you into a world of other parents who become friends which can be lovely and when I take my toddler out for a walk (much like a dog, no offence to him 😆) he makes me quite literally stop and smell the roses. And as I said, the love is unmatched. It's perfectly fine to hate being around kids. I only really like my own, and only appreciate them since having one, and working at a nursery would be my idea of hell.

@@organiclady I can recognize someone who's never had a Connection with a human being (don't get me wrong: that is truly tragic; every child deserves to have had that; but if it didn't happen, it didn't happen: now they're damaged and probably sociopathic or narcissistic, i.e. no serious empathy there, others are just props for their ends) in their entire life from a mile away at this point... You are one of those. There's no doubt about it. Sorry about your caretakers and their inability and failure to connect. They live a pathetic life, and damaged you, too. Again, tragic.
A healthy person would find your sentiment incomprehensible.
      As for others,
*people,* learn to 1) recognize losers (which you can only do with years of studying psychology and ESPECIALLY proper philosophy*), and 2) never, never, NEVER take advice from losers in the area about which they're giving advice or opinion! They'll poison your mindset, and may even (subconsciously or a few even consciously) try to make you fail, too. For example, never take advice about the other sex and dating from spinsters and incels, from sexual and romantic losers. Their subconscious will poison you, even if you don't understand how or think it's not happening. It is.
Oh, and especially run away from people who prefer creatures with automatic consciousness, i.e. with no free will, with no ability to understand, discover, and judge evil. HUGE red flag! These are some of the most damaged souls and incredibly toxic to you. Pity for what they didn't get in their childhood won't save you from the devil that's NOW in front of you. Pathological empathy, which is destroying the West today, makes you blind to the ACTUAL, due to you being focused on what _could have been,_ i.e. on the POTENTIAL, i.e. on that which is NOT a fact, unreality.
      * #1 recommendation: Objectivism; also, Stefan Molyneux's call-in shows of his podcast are good (where people talk with him at length about their lives and issues) - though careful with his philosophy, it has serious problems (intrinsicism, mysticism, altruism, collectivistic thinking, tribalism, mind-body split - you'll know what these are if you read my #1 recommendation)

❤I haven’t commented here before, it’s not lost on me that it’s seeing Ruby that made me reach out. I get it! I grew up with a similar dog obsession as Andy, with no dog ever coming my way. When I got serious with my now husband 40+years ago he had to pass the test “Do you want dogs in your future?” ✅ As soon as we moved to a rural lifestyle block we adopted a succession of both. He’s a cat person foremost so I could never envisage not having both - currently 2 cats, 4 dogs. Our youngest dogs are called cavoodles, here in New Zealand, (cavapoo elsewhere - Cavalier King Charles spaniel x toy poodle), they are very similar to Ruby in nature/intelligence and all those traits proud dog parents enthuse over. I accept my obsession when I admire every dog face out there before I look at the owner 🤣. Any future videos with Ruby just lying there are most welcome, watch the ‘likes’ go up!🥰

Oh my god! I had a black standard poodle named Walter when I was in middle and high school 😭 he was a treasure… with a Chris Farley personality if possible! But anyway, grew up with standards and one miniature, all amazing and my current poodle is a standard redhead or Johnny Ray Niles. And he just loves to play (the dog park community is fantastic) and morning/evening walks are essential, and definitely take advantage of walks in different areas or it’s like a dog reading the same book over and over if you walk in the same place too much. Congrats on being proud poodle parents 🎊 so much love and good memories will come. 🩷

God I came on here to comment on some thing you had said and heard Andy talk about pure love while I was starting to type and went off on a tangent about my son! Lol.
What I wanted to thank you for. was talking so openly about how when animal or child - or some sort of “third” comes into your life how it can alter your relationship as a couple. You get certain things from this “3rd” that you can start to not need it from your partner or like you said “get filled up with the cuteness quotient from the third… “ That you don’t look for it anymore from your partner. Become more of a partnership and or team in the caring for this little third and it can really change a relationship. And hearing you guys talk about, it made me realize that I have to work harder at keeping my partner ship alive as well in the end, that will only benefit the third! Lol
This is very true and I am so glad you put it into words because it was something I have been feeling for a long time and hearing you guys speak so openly and eloquently… Without judgement towards each other it was great to hear your advice around it.
So that’s what I meant to say when I got here! 😅

Such an adorable pup and so well-behaved throughout your entire podcast! I relate totally to Sharleen being the caregiver/responsibility-taker and Andy being the "fun" parent. We've had dogs for 40 years and it was always that way between my husband and me. I am a petsitter, and with every one of my clients, it's the dog-mom who calls me, makes all the arrangements, gives me instructions, and brings them to my home. I've never met the dog-dads unless I sit at their home, so it seems the norm that the woman takes on the responsibility of caretaker role (although I'm sure there are exceptions).

Congratulations! Ruby is just adorable. Poodles are the most wonderful pets. They are super intelligent and provide oodles of unconditional love. The most beautiful thing is they really listen and understand when you talk to them and they speak with their facial expressions. Last year we lost both our pups, Noel a toy and Cosmo a miniature. We were lucky to be their parents and miss them terribly.

One suggestion: Since Ruby is crated a lot, please be sure to remove her collar. It can get stuck between the crate bars and cause strangulation.

Now I can't tell if my experience adopting/having a dog has been an anomaly or if y'all's is lol... This sounds like best case scenario and Ruby seems to be adjusting so well!! An angel on earth. Congrats 🎉
Our dog is not a fetch dog either but he is definitely more willing indoors than outside. That might be tricky in NY! Maybe try in your building hallway if you have one? Outside there are too many more interesting things for our dog to care about a toy but the touch exercise is great! We do that too, so cute

Loved the presentation of your new family member Ruby. She is beyond precious.
I think the antibacterial wipes may be too toxic for her little body. There are natural and organic alternatives available.
I found "Earth Rated Plant Based Unscented Dog Wipes" with good clean ingredients. There are organic options as well.
