The fact that so many people view Jane Seymour as this blusbing innocent is insane. There was a lot of talk about her and Henry being physical before their marriage, even that Jane was pregnant at their wedding as Anne Boleyn had been, and that she had a miscarriage before conceiving Edward. Unlike Anne Boleyn, who's family, particularly her father, were hesitant of and worried over her relationship in the early days, we know Jane was actually coached by her family and the like of Carew into playing this demure, submissive opposite to his current wife. Does that mean she was a bad person? No, and it doesn't mean she may not have been horrified at the consequences to Anne Boleyn and the men, but she manipulated her way in. She didn't run and hide at home as Anne had, and she didn't refuse him sexually for years as Anne also had. Yet, the notion that Jane was this innocent angel persists.
I’ve never understood what Henry saw in Jane. Even people who liked her called her average and too pale and she’s certainly no ‘oil painting’ in Holbein’s paintings of her. I think Jane must have been coached on what to do and say to appeal to Henry and sow seeds of doubt and conflict with Anne. She wasn’t well educated or as intelligent as Katherine or Anne were, but she was smart enough to act the innocent waif when she must have been at least somewhat calculating in bringing down Anne. I don’t think she wanted Anne dead or suspected that would happen, but she was happy to try to get Henry to repudiate her as he did to Katherine. By the time she realized he was willing to destroy Anne, she must have been terrified as to whom she was marrying. After all, no son, no head.
She was wonderful to Mary but I don’t like how she didn’t seem to care about Elizabeth. Can’t shake that because Elizabeth was still a small child who needed her love and support
Great points! They certainly made Jane out to be the type of person that they wanted her character to be in the show.. which was not very indicative of her actual personality..
Regarding the "all of Henry's wives were pretty" part, I would question how much we know about what they looked like. I know that there are paintings of them, so we have a general idea, but there aren't photographs. Case in point, Katherine Parr... if you look at paintings depicting her (including the 2 made during her lifetime which survive to this day), I think she looks extremely different from painting to painting, like it's not the same person.
I think it comes to the painter the one who does the portrait and what their style of art is bc u can make an ugly women to an beautiful woman with different art styles
Hi Estelle! I see what you mean! I like the portrayal of the season three actress (Anabel Wallis) slightly more, but I don’t completely buy the innocent lamb act. In my opinion, Jane had more depth to her and this show does her a disservice!
Anne was not stupid. She immediately purged her ladies of Catherine's supporters. The fact that she didn't get rid of Jane says something. Although, part of it may have been her being second cousins with Jane and their mother's noted closeness. Jane was not stupid and played the courtly game with the best of them. Certain shrewd but not either the saint her supporters make her out to be nor the dumb blonde uglier version of Anne her detractor suggest either. It would have been nice to a character in the middle.
I reckon Jane must have been eye candy to be allowed to be a lady in waiting. She must just have stayed in the background and kept her opinions to herself until she was noticed by Henry, then her family would have coached her on how to play it. We'll maybe find out from you why there was a different Jane in series 2.
I never liked the tudors, there are some moments like the last days of Anne Boleyn that were pretty accurate but overall its just a soap opera with characters that have names of real people , Jane is portrayed s this angel basiclly which she was not , she wasnt soo perfect and never did anything wrong, also that misconception that Jane wanted Mary and Elizabeth come back to court is absurd , yes with Mary she tried indeed but with Elizabeth we know from different accounts that she didnt like Elizabeth, she didnt want to sit near her , theres one account that even says that Jane said out loud that Elizabeth should never be a princess since she is a daughter of Anne Boleyn( weather we can believe it or not doesnt matter actually cause I really think that Jane wouldnt have wanted Elizabeth to be legitimate )
To be fair, I've read that while she didn't intervene on Elizabeth's behalf like she did with Mary, she did send money or goods to be sold for money for the girl's clothing and care. Her governess had been writing Cromwell for some months not knowing what to put the child in because she had damaged and outgrown everything or nearly everything and neither he nor Henry seemed to be bothered.
Apparently, the portrayal of the last days of Anne Boleyn were due to the actress who portrayed her, Natalie Dormer, who insisted they change the script to make it more historically accurate.
@octavianpopescu4776 Natalie respected Anne and the history of it so much. She may not have worn contacts(I read they bothered her eyes too much), but the show runners wanted her blonde hair. She went out and immediately got her hair dyed dark brown. You can't have a blonde hair on one of the most famous brunettes in history, after all. I would love for her to at least produce a retelling of Anne's story, she would do it justice.
@@darianrose2195 I really appreciate Natalie Dormer for that. And in general, I like actors who advocate for their characters, especially when depicting historical characters.
In fairness The Tudors is a historical drama and most historical dramas tend to have dramatic license. Jane Seymour in The Private Life of Henry VIII was portrayed like some ditzy woman. I get what you mean by having at least some historical accuracies.
It was The Tudors, of course they were going to have a beautiful actress to play Jane. Like Jane, Anne Boleyn was no great beauty either yet Natalie Dormer is a attractive woman too. For Anna of Kleve, Joss Stone is really pretty but they had Henry say Anna looked like a horse in the show, that whole inaccurate Flanders Mare arc.

Her not being as educated as Catherine and Anne may have appealed to Henry.

I'd love to see a video on your thoughts on Jane's portrayal in Wolf Hall, in comparison!
😅
I preferred this Jane played by Anita in S2 compared with Jane played by Annabelle in S3 as this Jane was more understated.

The other thing is that Anne and Katherine were cousins, and their mothers were childhood companions and best friend who were a year apart.
Love your videos sm ❤

Yeah People like to picture her as a saint and she was a human like us
