What a serendipitously timed video 😁 I of course always love to see your wildlife paintings, and this is especially impressive given the level of detail in all those feathers! And you know, I never do full washes like you do for your spontaneous landscapes and what happened here (even if unintentional!), but I'm rather inspired to try it out. I loved the colors and granulation in that first layer!
Thank you Denise. YES! I was thinking the same thing (the serendipitous part). I didn't know exactly what your class was going to be about until today. I think my viewers would also enjoy a shout out to your Skillshare class maybe also as a Community post. An unplanned collaboration, LOL! The techniques you teach are very clear and accessible to those wanting to learn wildlife watercolor painting. skl.sh/2SthreU
I loved this painting! And it was timely for us, because a hawk flew into one of our windows last week. He wasn't hurt, but we went out and touched him trying to check for injuries. It was so awesome to touch it and look directly into his gorgeous orange eyes. Happily, once he got his second wind, he flew up to a nearby tree and then off.
@@mindofwatercolor Yes, we stayed well clear of those even while he was in a very stunned state. Those talons are much longer than they look from afar. Thankfully, he recovered and flew off. We didn't want to leave him defenseless, b/c there is a feral cat around that would have taken him on. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, for sure.
Thank you so much for this! I can't tell you how much you've encouraged me! I've only been using watercolor for about 3 years and watching you screw up a painting has given me the confidence to keep on going and inspired me not to give up. I've been working on a painting for the last couple of days that I was feeling so hopeless about. Hopeless about my own artistic ability. I just turned 75 years old and I've raised six kids. I didn't know I could do anything with art till I was nearly 40 and I started with oils . I was totally amazed that I could paint and I sold my work to help raise my 4 kids as a single parent, but I never thought I was very talented at painting, really. Then I raised 2 grandchildren and gave up painting for awhile during the time I was raising them. Then I started trying watercolors about 3 years ago and got interested in that because I don't have much money and I live in an RV. I've been trying to paint a cougar from a photo using watercolors and I was discouraged and thinking there's no hope. But I thought "well, maybe I could use some white gouache" but I haven't used gouache with watercolors before so I came to your channel looking for some guidance about using white gouache with watercolor paint and found this video. What a Godsend! Thank you for giving me hope! Bless you! My cougar may live to see another day and end up hanging on my son's wall after Christmas after all because I was trying to paint it for him as a Christmas gift.
I have used acrylic white gel pen for small white areas and drawings. It is really great to see another solution. Thank you for the relaxed view of having it in a sketchbook too. No fuss, no mess. I love that. Giving thanks for all things!!
Thank you but, it was quite positive actually and very important to share as some of the other comments here will attest to. It's important I teach all aspects, including how to handle problems when they arise because they will.
You really are an excellent teacher! You have no idea how important it is for me as an aspiring artist to see real experienced artists do mistakes and showing it! And then showing how they work through it to make it work. This video made me pick up an old painting that I had judged impossible, and with a little more work I managed to salvage it and make something I was actually proud of.
One of the many things I appreciate about your videos is that when something doesn't work out the way you had hoped you show us what you did next. That is so helpful!
Once again i am greatful for your videos. The hawk is gorgious. Two things i appreciate about this video are, first, that you did not start over when things went south of your plan. Beautiful art can come from egregious mistakes so completing what i start is important. Second, is the use of different techniques and aplications you used to produce this bird. Thank you for the lessons i learnd. Just one added thought. If HIS eye is on the sparrow they are watching the hawk too.
Beautiful hawk, Steve. I just love the ways you paint birds, and I always learn so much from you. Birds are what I paint all the time and I really love yours the most of all!. Thanks so much.
Hawks are magnificent and so is your rendering! I don't come from the camp that laments "embrace your mistakes". Knowledge and experience is about coming up with a new plan on the fly and making it work in spite of plans going awry. Obviously the plan and idea you originally had in your head wasn't meant to be, as witnessed by this amazing hawk rendering. This particular work of art was meant to be!
Seeing you deal with "mistakes" or problems as they come is so very beneficial not just because it's helpful to know even seasoned artists can make a mistake or run into problems but also seeing how you deal with it and wheel it all around to a beautiful piece. It's such a teachable moment and very inspiring. I love your videos, you're an amazing teacher and I'm so glad to have found your channel. TH-cam just got a lot more valuable. I really love hopping between your videos and In Liquid Color Denise's videos. Between the both of you alone I'm learning so much!
Hi Steve! I just purchased the Mijello Mission Gold Pure Pigment Watercolor Set that you did a review on (34 tube set thru your Amazon faves link) awhile back. I subscribe to your channel, as well as In Liquid Color-Denise and The Frugal Crafter- Lindsay's channel, along with a few others. Just wanted to thank you guys for doing such a great job for your subscribers. Just getting back into watercolors and I love it!
I like how you state it, "Details need to be finalized on top of values." Simple but not. To hold back, to not paint any details until the values are correct is not an easy thing to do. Showing us three ways to add the lightest areas is helpful, as well. This is a beautiful rendition of the fledgling.
This was a wonderful helpful video for me to see how to paint a red-tail hawk. I have a full view reference photo for my painting. I am torn between doing a watercolor version or a gouache version. Although after watching this video I might try mixing both mediums by doing a watercolor background & then use both mediums for the bird. Thanks for sharing this wonderful informational video.
I love your work! This was so helpful showing how you used the 3 mediums together. I really like how you pulled out a beautiful picture from a uh oh in the beginning! I would have started over....lol
Excellent mixed media painting of this young Red Shouldered Hawk. I enjoyed watching and listening to you. Thanks for painting this youngster, I'm sure that the hawk would be delighted with the finished portrait. Have a great day, and thanks again.
Absolutely beautiful. I love the variegated wash in the top left hand corner - the colours are yummy. I need to go and look for this on Patreon and see what you have there for this work. Thanks so much for the upload. :)
I look forward to your videos every Saturday. Thank you for your dedication and the work you put into sharing your passion. It’s been a huge blessing in my life.

I was fascinated with how you rescued the wash in the beginning. Sometimes the boo boos end up better than what you had planned. Your painting is gorgeous and I really appreciate your videos. Thank you
Steve, this is one of the most instructive tutorials for me, ever! Even though you had another plan in mind, it was really, really packed full of good tips for lots of different things from the paper to the paints to the frustrations and how to save the subject. Awesome!
I always learn from you, but I love hearing you say, I have made this mistake a hundred times :). I get so frustrated for making the same mistake. I get interested in painting and I forget everything I think I know :) Thank you for your teachings.
I think this is your BEST video so far! (And I've watched them all, some several times!) Great advice on doing the background early in the process. Fabulous narration on your thought process about the composition, working from detail to loose, etc. I'm even more inspired than usual after this one!
I really like this painting because I add a close experience with a hawk, last year and I wanted to paint one so looking forward to your next video thank you and have a wonderful day sir.

Fabulous.....Loved every bit of this tutorial. So much great information. Incidentally, bird information for you....if you didn't already know it....Birds fluff up their feathers in the cold to trap the heat within the feathers to keep them warm (sort of like a downey blanket).
