    I switched to watercolor back in 2008 from Acrylic and do realistic portraits with just watercolor alone. I always use the highest artist quality brands but you have to pick through them and cast out those that are fugitive. You have to watch out for those in every brand. I always only use 100 percent cotton rag and love the Arches hot pressed. But its not as sturdy anymore as it used to be. I've thought about using color pencils with my watercolor. I just have not dove into mixed media yet. I've used only the watercolor pencils a couple of times with my watercolor. I studied with Susan Harrison- Tustain. She's the one that got me into Schmincke back in 2010. Check out her work. She gave me the thumbs up several years ago that I'm ready to teach. I love several artist quality brands. Your painting is adorable! LOL! Traditional professional watercolorist rarely if ever use the straight black pigment either.

    I bought some Schminke Horadam after seeing Makooccino use them, they just seem to be the best quality for the price. Never even considered that they wouldn't lift with oms. Stunning image btw.

    Paper matters too? 😁 I finally got 100% cotton paper and it was like a whole different type of media. Thanks for the info, I’m figuring out multimedia. 👍🏻💖

    Wow! Fantastic job Lisa! I work with watercolors, and now, I working with colored pencils, and I never try this. And your unique style is so beautiful! I mix soft pastels with colored pencils, and it looks beautiful too. I would mix the same way, starting with the watercolor, and just do the details with the colored pencils. And I was fascinated by the fact that you could blend the colors of the pencils with the odorless mineral spirit, without affecting the layers of the watercolor, incredible!

    Great video.
    I’ve increasingly found with watercolour that the individual pigment makes such a different to the behaviour of the paint. Much more than other mediums. It took me a while but now I feel I get fewer surprises.
    Loving to see you learn with us.

    Never thought to go in with watercolor first. Water coloring is my favorite medium and colored pencil is my second favorite. Just knowing I can use them both at the same time and save a ton of time from just using colored pencil is a game changer. I also love Derwent Inktense pencils. I really enjoy working with them. I’m going to join your patreon. Do you have tutorials using your Wacom? I have one that has been sitting and collecting dust. I would love to get some hands on tutorials using it. I have used it but not as much as I should for the money I spent for it.

      You can also do a base layer in alcohol markers before pencil if your not too worried about lightfastness, mixed media is fun to play around with just gotta be aware of which medium will work with what.

    Hey Lisa great video! I have been using the light fast colors of the Polychromos faber castell water color with normal Polychromos for a wee while now. I then know if I sell the piece the piece is a better lightfast rating than say the derwent ink tense... I wish they were more lightfast! (sigh) and it speeds up the blocking in process too!

    So happy to see this pop on your channel as I've been playing with watercolor lately and was wondering about colored pencil may go with it.
    Just wanted to say thank you for making these videos, I've learned quite a bit watching you and you've made my journey back into art that much more enjoyable.

    WOW!!! I have been searching for this question for weeks! I am a daily watcher of yours recently so I'm so happy that you have answered this for me in this video. I was wondering if you could use solvent on top of watercolor/gouache to blend the colored pencils! I was wondering if it was archival, I know it works I've tried it, but just wasn't sure if it was archival. I am using Zest It pencil blend, well I ordered it and I'm going to try it, I'm not sure if that's archival with it? I tried it first with 99% alcohol and it sort of worked but kind of lifted sometimes, I do not have gamsol/oms on hand atm. After seeing this maybe I should pick some up, in case the zest it doesn't work out. Oh what a dream come true this is, you have seriously saved me from wondering!

    Since you’re working verticals on the easel, do your watercolors run? Watercolor is normally done flat or slightly tilted. I’ve not seen it done upright before,

    • @justacatwhocantype
      @justacatwhocantype 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It works ok as long as you aren't using loads of water. There are a few artists who do it, like Charles Evans. I think it mostly makes sense for people working on larger pieces.

    Hi. Love your videos. Have a question, I went over to Patreon to checkout your recordings with your link. You cover sooo many of the things I am interested in and would love to join , so just wondering which tier to register for so I know which ones each tier covers, some artist only give you so many depending on how much you pay monthly. Regards 🙂

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!! For the tiers, every single video is included in the $4 tier, so if videos are all you're interested in, then that one is for you. The other tiers have more rewards with additional reference photos, postcards, greeting cards, coloring pages etc. :)

    PRANG is not a horrible brand of cheap cheap cheap watercolors to practice with. Obviously it's not anything like a professional pallet but it behaves well and the pigments aren't horrible, especially not when you're learning how watercolors behave.
