That edited before upload part was bloody gold. Yahtzee, my go-to reviewer, you get a like simply on that alone. Thank you for all you do for the consumer; a don't take the piss critic is what this world needs.
Also, respect to sony for being honest. More than can be said for 97% of anything corporate in the world. The funny thing is I would have normally just passed this installment, because I only buy the best in this sea of content, but now I'll simply wait for a good price because of this video.

Also...I'm sure you find an irony for the people that actually sign up for a $2 membership, but watch all your content. The plug...I can imagine. TH-cam/escapist told you to do a thing; you said fine, meanwhile saying in your mind "Take the piss."

@@akaicedtea6236 The whole world is captured by an industry that won't even throw a pissed-on biscuit in the cage, let alone acknowledge human beings as people. So yeah, I respect a little humanity. Humanity is trash; if you haven't read any history or watch current events. But at least truth, as ugly as it can be, I can respect. That's one reason I love Yahtzee; He delves into the worst of the worst. If the worst a product has doesn't bother you, then you only have the good to look forward to. An informed consumer is a powerful consumer.

Yahtzee is great, but he doesn't know me, or I him. He owes me nothing, and neither I him. But liking and sharing is free to me and somehow gives him coin.
Also, I can compliment him and thank him with honesty he can appreciate because I'm not just some fanboy praising like a 12-year-old girl swooning over a pop star. He gets an attaboy, and that is it, more than us boring people will get.

On the one hand, I totally get that giving out products for free isn't required and they only do it to get publicity. So it's well within their rights to only hand it out to people who will speak well of them.
On the other hand, that's what commercials are for. You want unabashedly dishonest positive coverage, release it yourself.
Being selective on who you give review copies to some degree is practically required, but drawing that line strictly based on who will kiss your ass is obviously a big problem for customers in the game industry and a totally understandable reason to be upset.

Sony spent tens of millions of dollars developing a piece of entertainment and it's their literal job to try and sell copies. They have no ethical, legal, or moral obligation to send a free copy to reviewers early. They have no obligation to try and present an objective view of their product, or to enable someone to do such, particularly when the tone of that person's content is generally negative for comedy purposes.

My main gripe with the story is that they establish Emperor Nefarious to have some sort of telekinetic power that allows him to easily toy with the heroes. And then it's just never addressed again. There was a clear reason for why he keeps beating the heroes, and this is a very high-tech setting so the heroes could go on a quest to find a device that nullifies that power of his, but for some reason the villain just decides to not use it the same way anymore. What happened there? Or did I just somehow miss some plot point that explains how they countered THE ability that kept beating them?

I mean they started coming out and admitting it when Jim Sterling got blacklisted by most publishers a decade ago, and you worked with them back in the day. They outright admitted it when Konami stopped inviting reviewers to events if they're coverage was negative. They outright admitted it when a GameSpot reviewer was fired for a bad score on Kayne and Lynch. Review embargoes of specific content is outright admitting it. Most game "reviewers" and "journalists" are just extensions of the AAA publishers' marketing wings and they stay in that lane voluntarily because their access to advanced code and therefore jobs depend on it. Appreciate you joining the few voices that call that out though. Glad you're not worried about never getting Sony code, and possibly other code for calling the practice out, again. Stay independent. Almost no one does.

The original really didn’t have much personality to begin with. Its characters were mostly forgettable, lazy cliches. I guess you could consider them satire? The dialogue was uninspired, even the stuff you might consider “risqué.” It was just fourth wall breaks and the occasional “wink wink nudge nudge” gag. Likewise, the characters and what little story there was never came together to form anything cohesive. Even the levels mostly just consisted of repetitive night cities and day forests. Overall, the game hasn’t aged well, and writing has never been Insomniac’s strong suit.

It was well-known that Insomniac was more concerned with making their games feel and play as enjoyable as possible while Naughty Dog was more concerned with plot (which I disliked about NG because sometimes they take it too far and their videogames turn into boring slog with popcorn cinema plots). You also saw some ACTUAL character development by splitting up Ratchet and Clank so they can stop talking about their super friendly bromance for a few hours and make some strides in their own regards. It seems like they had the right formula with that game: outside of their comfort zone while still maintaining the familiar feel fans love. The plot, setting, and characters aren't compelling, and the writers seem to have run out of ideas. @@nonamepasserbya6658 It’s not mutually exclusive to be full of yourself AND risk adverse; they are not opposite concepts. Triple-A game companies ARE getting really full of themselves, they have been for years as they manage to openly break laws everywhere and not get put into the ground. (Anti-crunch laws, workers rights laws, anti-abuse laws, circumventing gambling laws, etc.)
Meanwhile, many Triple-A companies have become increasingly risk-adverse. For an example: Why is Marvel’s Avengers a generic always-online looter-shooter (with no shooting) action-RPG (with the RPG elements being extremely light, like three steps down from Diet Pepsi) with a shit story and boring characters when the license it’s made from is known for over a decade of rich stories and extensive lore through movies, companion comics, and TV shows? Simple, risk adversity. These types of games are supposed to consistently sell well and hook whales to make boatloads of money with only a token update every few months.
It also takes a certain level of egotism to not just deny review copies to game’s critics, but to tell them “We don’t like your tone, buy it yourself.” Normally, publishers withholding review copies will just not respond to reviewer requests, issuing complete radio static. Instead, companies (or at least Sony) are openly stating that they’ve got a curated list of corporate good boys, and the people they’re denying are not on that list.

Look, kid, I get you're like 16 and just learned about capitalism from Prager U, but I don't give a fuck about corporations. I want good products, with reviews that are accurate. Sony could attach a clause that says that reviewers must give it a 10/10 or they don't get a review copy. And I would argue that is unethical since it cheats ratings. But by the same merit, restricting access to only those that will give you a 10/10 is equally unethical for the same reason. Ratings become toxic and useless. Do you want to live in a world where every product only has 10/10, 5/5 reviews? So no, I'm not living in some fantasy world, I'm living in a world where I care about my money going to something worthwhile, and reviewers are a means to identify that, good and bad. So take your corporate sucking mouth, and keep it out of my face, thanks

@@PainasaurusRex I'm not saying it's a good thing. I don't give a fuck about them either. But it's fucking stupid to be like "oooh you know if I were running a multi-billion dollar company that was beholden to its shareholders I'd be good and honorable and risk bad reviews because it's the right thing to do". Shonen protagonist shit. Real life is trash.

Sad thing is, Yahtzee's aside about the game title still shows more integrity than most gaming "journalists" nowdays, despite being done for comedic purposes

I think having "influencers" for everything has blurred the line between promotion and review which corporations can't tell the difference between.

Knowing the state of the game AAA sector of the game industry, I'm genuinely more surprised that Yahtzee getting blacklisted didn't happen years ago as it did to pretty much everyone else being willing to be critical instead of just licking AAA publisher asshole and giving 8 out of 10 to every game with a gameplay loop predominantly consisting of predatory gambling.
