@@lowcostfish Yes; it's used in combination with sticks. Typically, you use the right stick to make the bigger camera movements and the gyro for the finer aiming. It works really well, and every Nintendo console since the 3DS has had gyro aim, including the Wii U and the Switch. The Playstation 4 and 5 controllers also have gyroscopes, but using them is almost never a feature on PS4/PS5 games because of the irrational hatred towards motion controls, though ironically they are a feature when using that same controller to play the same game on Steam.

I know Miitopia isn't a good game. But I've found really creative people who make Miis have made the game somewhat enjoyable. Then it becomes a weird adventure of random characters and watch them interact with one another; filling in the blanks with your own imagination of how you remember that character act.
Basically, it's a game where you write a fanfiction: Mad Lib style.

To be fair to Yahtzee though, I feel like the lack of a randomization option for assigning roles really hurts the comedy aspect of the Switch port. Nothing hits the funny bone quite like hitting the random button in the original and getting Billy Mays and a Goomba as the lovey-dovey couple or Ronald McDonald as the Dark Lord.
His talk of having to make/find Miis for every role himself really does hit home, since it *does* take a considerable amount of fun out of the experience if you don't already have a big mii collection, or know where to find the best creator codes, or are simply locked out of sharing Miis entirely because you don't have a Nintendo Online subscription.
I wish they had built in a random option that had access to all the well-decorated Switch Miis, rather than forcing you to assign all the roles yourself and only giving instant-access to the 3DS Miis.
(Note: Creator codes are nice, but are hit or miss if you're looking for a specific Mii since a) there are duplicate Miis across creator codes which make it harder to find rarer characters b) there's no search or good sorting options c) locked miis take up a ton of space on many creator codes and d) there's no good way to search all publicly shared Miis to find who you want, so they're still just a mediocre replacement for the 3DS system which actually *did* have all of those things.)

Now I haven't played Miitopia, but the argument that I could use my own imagination to write my own story always sounded like a cop-out to me.
Yes, I do have an active imagination, and I can imagine just about any story about anything. Back in the 80's I used to imagine that "Chucky Egg" (a simplistic platformer about collecting eggs while avoiding the ckickens) was a metaphor for the struggle of the proletar (represented by the hard-working Chucky) against the oppressive corporate chicken. Or that Pac Man was the first survival horror game.
But then I don't need to buy a new game. If I'm to write my own story anyway, I can do that just as well with game I already own. I can pretend I'm the son of a crashed Tal'Shiar (Romulan secret police) in Fallout New Vegas thanks to the mods that add pointy eared races, or that I'm an Orion (from Star Trek) that got teleported by Q to a medieval world in Skyrim. Or really, I don't even need the game, I can do that just with Microsoft Write and a bottle of vodka :p
So any company that basically tells me, "buy our game, and then, err, make up your own story" is not off to a great start, shall we say.

I would say that he gave this game a pretty good review, all things considered. A very thoughtful analysis as usual, and he actually gave it credit where it amused him and stole a week from him.
At any rate, I hate when people point to tasteful gyro controls as a vindication of Wii-era (and still extant today) whole-arm unresponsive peripheral gimmicks. The two are related in technical specification only, and pretty much nobody has the former in mind when they rag on the latter and wish it the much-belated death it deserves.

@@Enuchful But no one says the latter as the latter; they just say "motion controls" and the fact is that tasteful gyro controls are a form of motion controls.
Not to mention, the Wii era had IR pointer controls, which were even better than a gyro because they're faster and they don't lose calibration, and the reason that gesture controls were unresponsive in the Wii era was due to the standard Wii Remote not actually having a gyro; it only had an accelerometer, so it basically just knew if you were shaking the remote. It was the Wii Motion Plus that added a gyro, and that got used for two games: Wii Sports Resort and Skyward Sword, and because it was an add-on, it wasn't well-implemented.

Miitopia is basically what would happen if you crossed a child's doll/action figure collection with a mad lib and thus may just be one of the greatest games for children ever made. Like dolls, it's more of a framework and an aid for taking characters that you know and having them go on adventures together than a proper game in and of itself. The random interactions serve as grounds for constructing your own narrative for these characters through interpretation, and combine with the often vague prompts given for setting characters to inject a level of unpredictable absurdity into these otherwise recognizable situations. Hense the mad libs comparison. The available adventures and interactions are far more limited than the purely imaginary world of dolls, but the player is not limited to only figures that they already own or, indeed, individuals for which figures exist at all.
None of this to say that the game is high art or even a good video game. Like many of the other mii-focused Nintendo projects, it functions primarily as a toy. It's a good toy, for those who like that kind of play, but if you're expecting a game you will be disappointed.

It was hilarious to play, especially if you get crazy with the character creation and know there's no filter for the names. When I got the horse in the demo, I named it Dildo just to see if there was a filter and custumized it to look like a pink, fat rocket with accents and horn.
There's also a Safe Spot that covers healing if you're willing to give up a few turns for that character.
I'd say its a good game if you're sick and don't really want to think too much. Which is when I played it.

Late-game... Or maybe post-game the Sprinkles and Safe Spot mechanic can definitely be put to more strategic use.
    Especially in the boss rush.
Only thing I ended up hating was the sickness mechanic sticking around post final boss.
I could see its use before then, as an incentive to keep your party member levels equal-ish for the final battles, but it's a nuisance during the post-game.
Especially since after the credits the game allows your main character to be among those who can randomly get sick. And hey if that happens you have no input on combat outside of the sprinkle/safespot mechanic until they get better.
The game's still great fun, though your mileage will vary depending on your own creativity and propensity towards wacky cast choices.

There is just so much and people went to town with this new feature, most streams I checked out were people just dumping hours into making friends, OCs or abominations in the editor. I can understand why it didn't really rub you the right way though, since you didn't have much interest in the character creation or interaction aspect it was boring. My primary complaint about the game is that it's too easy. Once you get a couple levels under your belt, you win basically every fight on the first round. And you can't even increase the difficulty if you want it to be more of a challenge! I do love the game tho. It is really cute and a lot of fun. I find I'm basically creating a flipbook of screenshots when I play and then annoying all my friends as I spam screenshots at them showing them what their character did. So it's definitely excellent as a "annoy all your friends" game.
And I obviously had to make my mom the Dark Lord, but that has more to do with my... less than healthy relationship with her. What can I say, she's a fundie Baptist and a Karen and into a lot of MLM stuff and regularly tries to suck me in as well, then gets pissed off at me when I point out it's all one huge scam.

It's kinda funny to see Yahtzee make fun of motion controls when he's so optimistic about the future of VR gaming which often uses motion controls for extra immersion.

    • @CurlyHairedRogue
      @CurlyHairedRogue 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Didn’t he explain that the reasoning behind that is the fact that VR is immersive, while motion controls tend to end up being significantly less so? Like… if you’re wearing a VR headset and you have a controller, you can sit down and play a game, and control the camera with your head, providing more immersion with a standard experience.
With motion controls, you literally need to stand up, make the same motions, and hope you have the proper space, and that you’re not about to smack someone or something. Motion controls are kinda weird and unresponsive too, by comparison to more standard controllers.
I dunno. I can’t speak for him, but it doesn’t seem his opinions have changed terribly much on the matter.

    • @GameDevYal
      @GameDevYal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The difference is that VR controls give you MORE precision (you can use your entire body to line up inputs), while the majority of wii titles just replaced perfectly good button inputs for menu navigation with "shake the controller to the left and it might read as a left input, if you're lucky". And let's not even mention how """reliable""" Kinect's image-recognition technology was...
But the biggest sell for VR probably is immersion, not controls.

@@clayjack9969 The Wii actually used an IR pointer for aiming in games like RE4, Sin & Punishment 2, and the Wii version of Twilight Princess, and it's actually better than the gyro since it can make faster motions across the whole screen and it avoids loss of calibration. The gyro wasn't a Wii feature until the Wii Motion Plus (the standard Wii controller only had the pointer and an accelerometer), and the only two Wii games to use the gyro for aiming were the archery game in Wii Sports Resort, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
That said, the gyro is the feature that has survived and was put in the Wii U and in both Switch joy-cons (each joy-con has its own gyro and accelerometer), and it's what those consoles use for aiming.

Also, I don't know what you're talking about with menu navigation, as menu navigation on the Wii was almost always implemented using the IR pointer, which was a strict *upgrade* as it's basically a mouse without the friction and with even less movement needed. While I’m not normally one to comment a quote from the video in the comments on the video, “My device for playing indie games while on the plop” is a little too accurate.

A few weeks back, I saw someone make Majima every role in the town. Majima really was everywhere.

Of course the Switch has Miis on it, how else would it store data for Breath of the Wild? No, I’m not kidding, BotW characters are Miis.

That was such a cool bit of info when it was revealed! And I really hope this version of Miitopia is a sign of things to come for the Mii editor; it would be a shame to not have enhanced Miis like that going forward.

....has Yahtzee never heard of vr? The controls of that, are somewhat reminiscent to a certain console, that required a lot of movement.......( Beat Saber)....

He also has apparently forgotten that gyro aim is alive and well both on the Switch and on Steam. Motion controls are outright better than buttons and control sticks for things like aiming, so it has stuck around.

The difference there being vr controllers are actually tracked accurately, unlike the garbage that was the wii controller.

    • @matthewmuir8884

@@CycFlame To be fair, the Wii was basically the prototype for the current generation of motion controls; that's like comparing a WW1 biplane to modern aircraft.
Also, one reason why the Wii remote couldn't accurately track precise motions was that it didn't actually have a gyro; it had to make do with just an accelerometer and an IR pointer, so it really could only tell where you were pointing the wii remote (if you had the sensor for the IR pointer turned on) and whether or not you were shaking the remote.

Toy story mainia is actually a pretty good game. It's based on the ride at the Disney parks. It's essentially a light gun game were you try and get a highscore. Lots of secrets and strategies. Mainly though it's a fun causal party game that most people will like.

I highly recommend Shenpai's playthrough where the entire royal family is the Yakuza 0 cast and there's a mage who casts EXPLOOOSION every battle to great effect. It's the best.

How did you miss the option to enter codes to download Miis? It's mentioned everywhere the game is. It's either laziness ir your ignored or to make a bad joke.
