    This exact model was the very first VCR my family got, summer of 1983. We had that old VCR for years, even after we went to VHS in the spring of 1989. I used that old Betamax to dub movies. That VCR stayed with us until the mid 2000’s. Good times

    I must confess I've never actually owned a Betamax, got a few tapes for it, got a few when they were dumping them when I worked on TV, so there's loads of video game trailers on Betamax I own strangely. But that's it. Family always had VHS.

      RetroGamerVX I vividly remember a very nice old Akai toploading VHS VCR that we watched a ton of movies on with friends back in the day. I'd love to get my hands on such a VCR.
      Akai had a different design compared to others, quite a distinct font that was used and styling. Loved that. Also quite a fan of the old Pioneer brand.

    Betamax was better than VHS and I still stand by that view now. I started off with a good secondhand Betamax back in 1985 when video recorders were still expensive and it lasted me five years. Eventually I had to change to the inferior VHS system because Betamax lost the format war. I also have in my possession a Video 2000 which I bought from a car boot sale years ago and it worked for a while. I am wondering you would be interested in it for spares or repair as I am having a de-clutter at home at the moment and I am reluctant to just throw something like that out. I have met you up at Nenthead Mines recently and I hope to see you again soon.

    • @RetroGamerVX
      @RetroGamerVX  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, you met me up there? lol. Was that at the Assay House? As for the machine, just looked it up, yes, I'd be interested, do you know what's wrong with it? :o)

    • @6edTelevision
      @6edTelevision 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it was at the Assay House. When I tried it last time the picture quality wasn't too good, it probably would work okay if it has a new head drum. You will need a digibox with an analogue RF output and a television that takes an analogue signal. I will be up at Nenthead on Saturday 18th November as it is the annual NMCS do then.

    My unit was also retrieved from a pile of garbage in a front yard. Thanks RetroGamerVX for this video. Incredibly helpful. Mine is a Magnasonic MVC 700 but is the exact unit with the exception of a speed switch on the front labeled BII or BIII for speed. I can't get my tapes (180min) to play properly in the machine regardless what speed is selected. They play very slow and wont track. I can barely see an image. I assume this is a belt issue so will try that first - but if anyone has any other ideas I am all ears.

    The perfect movie to play on an old Betamax . Well any Star Wars movie is the perfect movie for me to test on any video player of any type.

  • @jakemusictvs

    This is the exact same machine that my family had in the 1980s (when I was a young kid), in Australia. We used it for many years. All the movies we hired out from the video store had to be on Beta during the 1980s. Our local video store had a basement (where all the Beta videos were stocked). I remember always having to walk in the front door of the video store, walk past all the VHS titles and then down the stairs to the Beta section. We moved onto a VHS player sometime in the early 1990s, after Beta had finally lost the battle against VHS. I remember my parents originally thought that Beta would win, or there would (at least) always be a tie. Now my family has to concede that we were wrong.

    Lovely find, the old thing looks like new. Probably weighs a ton. Hopefully you can fix her up, and I'd not be surprised if you pinched a few other bits from a tasty skip like that ! Like the old Murphy telly too. Probably the tape path needs cleaning, and perhaps the belts. Some Grundig VHS machines had this strange tape loading system as well, they were called "Charlie Decks" from memory. You could try an "O" ring on that idler. The gear drive I think was for Rewind/FF, the rubber idler for take-up.

    • @RetroGamerVX
      @RetroGamerVX  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it does weigh a tonn lol. I've got some belts ordered for it and some chemicals to help the idler :o) Yes, lovely telly that needed no work on it, only paid £10 for it :) Ahh, if it's the gear drive then likely the belt issue :)

    A few idler tips I found that work on turntables and some projectors,
    If the idler is a rubber ring aka think rubber band here that fits into a grove in the plastic or metal holder.. Use a oring that is snug by remove old rubber first.
    If the idler is solid rubber with a plastic shaft or metal. Buy a rubber hose that fits over snug and thight. Just put the hose part over the rubber and it well work.
    Also you can buy rubber renew it works ok.
    Some times if you can keep it round using sandpaper well remove the glaze on it you need to spin it and sand at the same time.

    • @RetroGamerVX
      @RetroGamerVX  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that, plan is to use rubber restorer, if that doesn't work alone, other people have told me also to roughen up the edge.

    You only need the idler tyre, which I can still get.The rest of the idler assembly is bomb proof.The patended idler assemblies always come flying apart after a few uses as the top washer let's go. It's happened a lot hence why I only change the tyre now.Also don't use 'O' rings as I see some suggesting elsewhere.There are many other areas that need seeing too after 30 odd years too.

    • @RetroGamerVX
      @RetroGamerVX  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can get them? I've not seen any of the tyres on the net so if you could, that would be good. Gonna spruce up the rubber in the mean time. Why not use o rings?

    • @paymydues
      @paymydues 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      'O' rings are rounded and shiny, the correct belt's are matt and square helping them to grip inside the pulleys.'O' rings are not designed for use with pulleys otherwise the manufacturers would have fitted them.It's another shortcut some suggest which will not last long.

    the bottom failure is like the tape or the pinch roller. Or simple the tracking for this tape. The Lineal is aligned to low that means you must align the tape on the pinch roller side a little bit higher! You can see that on the bottom of the tape that is rolling a little bit - this tape mus stand straight to the head drum(scanner). Clean the Center wheel in the mid of the winding reel or renew it! This is a old machine so you need to renew this or clean it in the minimal version. Maybe the pinch roller have the problem what is with the wrong running tape on the scanner.(this is the picture failure on the bottom part of the picture).

    HiI regularly service and overhaul/refurb these to a very high standard.Yes even now they are still in demand. Sadly many who state they service these seem to do a pretty poor job for the monies they charge. I've seen their efforts.Also the reason WHY Sanyo called their decks Betacord is for two reasons.One they developed a system just before Betamax called Video cord and ..Secondly they decided from the VTC 5000 model (and every other model they made until their switch to VHS only in 1987) to have the deck unlace for the fast wind modes to save excessive friction and wear to the tape, heads and mechanicals. All other beta types keep the tape laced during these modes as did Sanyo's first four models.The noise at the bottom of the screen is either the crossover point is set a tad to high,or the tape guide at the drum exit point has been moved up, by someone thinking this will help it play better.The people who skipped this have obviously not heard of e-bay.Nice find. It's probably the most popular model out there.

    I think that some of the belts have to be replaced as they tend to doze and break down and disintegrate over time due to the nature of what the belts are made from if the belts were made from butyl rubber the belts would not happen.

    It's really funny to see how the porn industry is capable of making or braking video formats.
    VHS was chosen by the porn industry over of Betamax or Video2000
    BluRay was chosen by the porn industry over HD-DVD
    I reckon the winner for the most viable VR platform will be the platform the porn industry gravitates to.
