Some Bible scholars have suggested the forbidden fruit was a fig. Why? After eating of the forbidden fruit Adam and Eve cover their nakedness with fig leaves (Ge 3:7) . What was the fruit conferring immortality? Genesis has Cherubbim stationed near the tree to deny man access to it (Ge 3:24). In 1 Kings Solomon's Temple is decorated with palm trees and cherubbim (1 Kings 6:32) and in Ezekiel we are told again that Solomon's Temple is decorated with Cherubbim and Palm Trees (Ezek 41:18, 20, 25). Palm trees bear clusters of dates for fruit. Ergo Genesis' fruit conferring immortality was most probably conceived of as being a date. In ancient Mesopotamia, fruit tree gardens located in the Sumerian Edin, had as their tallest fruit tree the date palm. In its life giving-shade grew the smaller fig tree. This perhaps explains why figs and dates are portrayed as near each other in Eden's (Sumerian Edin) fruit tree garden.
