@@lelandfitz1762 Because the Panasonic 26mm f/8 was full of wrong and shouldn't be something a company as established as Panasonic should be making. It compromised too much on capabilities just to make a very cheaply built lens that honestly wasn't that cheap either.
@@thedarkslide We have no idea what your point is. The Panasonic has a fixed aperture of f8. This Viltrox has a variable aperture and can therefore have less or more DOF, as desired.
Viltrox has shown it's possible, to make such a tiny autofocus lens for the E-mount! No manual focus ring is somewhat of a dealbreaker.. fixed aperture, crazy vignetting.. but for 100 bucks it's a fun little lens, you can't complain! While compared to this it's much bigger, you could try the 24mm tony 2.8 for a tiny vlog setup, that could be interesting IMO. Awesome song btw!

Nice job on the video. 👍 It's good to know it focuses well enough in video mode on newer Sony cameras. With the a7S I tried it tended to rack focus in video a lot. Though, I was able to set to manual focus and assign a custom button to "AF/MF Control Hold" to mimic AF-S. Another button set to "Focus Area" so I can adjust the focus point more easily. Or like you said, you can pause autofocus as well when it is in AF-C.

I bought this on accident, well, not exactly accident but I had no idea it was a new product. I usually use my Sony ZVE1 and FX3 for footage where space wasn't an issue, so I use my usual prime lenses, and then started a series where I needed to get into tight spaces for tank repair, so we began just using our phone for those shots, and it was easier and quicker to setup than the way I had the cams set up. I decided, na mane this cell footage ain't it so I hopped on B&H, found a wide angle pancake lens to slap on the ZVE1 and bought it. I wasn't expecting much from it, but figured it would be much better than my cell footage from previously. This morning I filmed some stuff with it and was very, very happy with the results. I was like "man why haven't I heard of this lens before?" Then I look it up and realize it was just released lmao.
I just bought the indiegogo deal. I've been looking for a small travel/street lens for a while and this is just a no-brainer, especially on the previous generation smaller bodies like the A7III/A7R III/A9 it's a legit pocket size point and shoot. Well done Viltrox!
This lens is body lens cap thickness, almost. Impressive that it isn't a gimmick f/22 pinhole lens, but a real lene, with USB connection, autofocus, though with fixed aperture.
Sadly its for the wrong system, they should need to make a APSC version too so you can really use the small size as a benefit, FullFrame even the Alpha C is to big to be compact with this
Its a sexy lens. Everyone is talking about it and I planned to buy it. But I changed my mind. It has three bummers! 1. You cannot stop down the aperture to get more DOF. Limits its usage for street photography (and in bright light). 2. You cannot use it for manual focusing. Limits its usage for street photography. 3. You cannot open it up fully, getting a round aperture. So, you cannot avoid star spikes and cannot get round bokeh.

It's got a bit of pop when focused perfectly... but for size and cost it's not much to worry about... plus, I see you can stick the Pocket 3 Anamorphic filter on it and it works well for extra creative funzies

bro you keep talking about 3d pop, you should try the zeiss loxia especially the 35 and 50 the 3d pop is amazing with a lot of contrast, i got mine for only 300 bucks what a gem
Call me crazy but I genuinely see 3D pop with this lens, especially when you're filming on the railroad tracks. I'm guessing it's because you're in focus right to the very edges while the background is soft so you pop. Maybe stopping down is the key for the 3D pop.
It's tiny, so it only has like, two and a half lens elements, one is likely a sheet of paper... two of them are extra-low dispersion, perfect for blending right into your background. But hey; how many body caps do you own that allow you to shoot photos?
Sony 20mm pancake f2.8, APSC, manual/autofocus, + discreet, shoot thro' lens cap. Similar performance to the Viltrox. They work together with my Sigma 18-50 which, although compact is NOT pocketable like the others. BTW I'd give the Sony 16mm pancake a miss as I'm told its a poor performer, comments from users?
"Ultimate..." but no variable aperture. Canon has the 28mm RF which is pretty small, sharp and has autofocus, manual focus and variable aperture. There is also the EF 40mm f2.8 which is sharp, has autofocus, manual focus and variable aperture. Nikon has the 26mm Z mount.
I have 13 28mm lenses from the Sigma 28mm f1.4 ART to the Sony FE 28mm f2 to Nikkor 28mm f2.8 AIS and then a bunch more vintage lenses I found at thrift stores over the years. I love 28mm focal length but this lens you just tested? Maybe not. Toneh 4.5 fixed aperture? Nah...

I can tell you on the Z6ii yeah the stabe is meh... idk if it's improved for the Z6iii I don't own that. I bought a used 26mm from keh and returned it. It actually looks pretty decent. The slow mo footage looked soft as hell, but the the vlog footage where you're closer to the camera looks better than I expected from a f/4.5 lens.
Pleb question: I have a Z9 which does crazy video stuff, but I also have a GX8 which does 4k as well. I only need 24fps and AF isn't much of a concern. Why wouldn't I use the massively lighter lovely little ancient Panasonic? I don't see older videos and think 'these look terrible', so I'm wondering if all that x-bit raw blah stuff is only something video nerds notice? So close to loving this. Generally I find viltrox quite boring. Apart from their microloser 13mm f1.8 lens that one has some character, all the others are a bit clinical. However their build quality for the price has been awesome, all metal construction, yes please. But this one is actually fun. Didn't see it coming. Has some character. Pancake with autofocus. Love that. 28mm Street lens, yes please. Built in lens cap, yes please. But why no manual focus its a 28mm 4.5 street lens ffs, just want to set the focus manually and leave it😢 I assume it must be impossible to have both mf and af at this size then
Why do lens companies make these kind of lenses? I wonder how many people will be interested in purchasing one. And if you do purchase it just for its size, then what’s the point of owning such a nice camera?
As of this post, 2,556 people have bought it in like what, a week? Lookup other reviews, it has taken amazing images. It's best use is most likely street PHOTOGRAPHY, where a lot of shooters want something small, discrete, not attention grabbing, and better suited for smaller setups like the Sony A7 series. Many talented street photographers that I have followed over the years used smaller setups and shot around f/4 as well. Just bone-headed questions from you.
It's cool conceptually, but nowadays i just dont see it being much better than pulling out your smartphone. The focal length and depth of field are roughly equivalent to a new iphone camera with much less light gathering at f/4.5 (vs f/1.8) so you'll need more ISO and therefore close the noise gap. On top of all of that, optically it's just mid, and im guessing an iPhone RAW will be sharper

Compared to the Canon EF lenses you showed in the previous video, this viltrox has no 3D pop that I can see.

On MFT we get it even smaller with t2.5. About 1.5 stops more light which should compensate for the ISO. 😅🤪

That’s odd about the dynamic active. That works even with manual lenses. Just set the focal length manually and it should be able to do it.
For some reason it greys out in the menu occasionally. It works now.

It's best use is most likely street PHOTOGRAPHY, where a lot of shooters want something small, discrete, not attention grabbing, and better suited for smaller setups like the Sony A7 series. Many talented street photographers that I have followed over the years used smaller setups and shot around f/4 as well. Just bone-headed questions from you.
It's cool conceptually, but nowadays i just dont see it being much better than pulling out your smartphone. The focal length and depth of field are roughly equivalent to a new iphone camera with much less light gathering at f/4.5 (vs f/1.8) so you'll need more ISO and therefore close the noise gap. On top of all of that, optically it's just mid, and im guessing an iPhone RAW will be sharper
