In this clip, Gilbert Arenas sheds light on why Kobe Bryant had a disdain for Smush Parker. Parker shared a personal anecdote when he attempted to initiate a casual conversation with Bryant, only to be promptly dismissed on the grounds of insufficient accolades. He recalls feeling disrespected and belittled by Bryant, who held his teammates to high standards. This sentiment resonates with an account shared by Sebastian Telfair of Bryant's excessive competitiveness and somewhat harsh dismissal of those without the same level of dedication. Gilbert Arenas suggests this outright hostility towards Smush Parker likely arose when Parker failed to meet Bryant’s extreme work ethic requirements. Unlike some of Bryant’s close friends like Pau Gasol and Matt Barnes, who were readily available for sudden, demanding training sessions, Parker seemingly failed to rise up to Bryant's challenges, leading to the latter's disparaging regard for him. Bryant's obsession with process over results put him at odds with teammates whom he perceived to be relying on their inherited skills rather than building a strong work ethic.

What’s interesting is Kobe respected Adam Morrison when Kimmel was roasting him for never playing. They respected each other in practice. There was something deeper with Smush.
I think by that time Kobe had matured as a leader. Besides adam Morrison was actually a good player. I wish he would have got more playing time
Yes, because Kobe saw Morrison consistently work hard in practice and, therefore, he respected him. He respected Morrison's work ethic and, therefore, respected him as a man.
Kobe apparently felt that Smush didn't work hard in practice and, therefore, he didn't respect him.
With Kobe and people like him, it is about work ethic and dedication to being the best you can be. Kobe respected work ethic.

I wonder how that conversation went when Kobe called Dwight Howard at 4am😂
Dwight was probably in some gay bar at 4am lol
They really did have a conversation before Howard got there where Kobe made up his mind that he wasn't going to work out.

3:11 This explains the entire NBA right now…
You can CHALLENGE a teammate. Take another example - Steve Kerr. Everyone knows the Jordan story when Kerr was punched. But look at the type of teammate Kerr was and how he had Jordan's trust 100%. Kerr didn't back down - that guy was one of the biggest fighters in the game I'd seen. I think that's what it's about. Jordan saw guys get there that weren't part of the huge FIGHTS in Chicago Stadium but were there for the cushy United Center. And he thought Kerr was just one of those guys. Kerr proved he wasn't and had a backbone.
But other guys on the team struggled at times. Rodney McCray rings a bell, as does Dennis Hopson. But Burrell kind of captures it best - Jordan was trying to get a response or a FIGHT but that just wasn't his personality. With Scott Burrell Jordan was genuinely interested because he saw something in the (then) kid - he was a guy that excelled at BOTH Baseball and Basketball, baseball a level. Guy was a talent and gifted. Could be similar with Smush Parker - he's just not that kind of guy.
Just the way it is though, we're all different. Bryant, Jordan, etc. - they're just different. They think (thought) different. Intense. But the odd, funny thing sometimes is how they are with their own kids. I tip my hat to Jordan in a way there because he seemed acutely aware of the pressure his own kids might have just because they had his name & how to make sure they could carve their own lives and futures with his support. He toned stuff WAY down for them. Just like Bryant did, etc. And I'll say this - I've seen Gil Arena's kid play basketball and what I really like... is I see a kid that genuinely enjoys the game, a testament to how Arenas is with him.
Gill is wrong again. Results is what matters. Nobody cares if u work hard. Did u win is the question. How hard u work only comes into play when u lose. Many people work hard everyday but we don’t hear about them unless they win.
A.I: "Pratice?!"
He’s not wrong. It’s an opinion, 2 things can be true at the same time. If you win but you cheated or cut every corner possible, anybody with a moral compass wouldn’t respect the win….. Of course results matter but if we found out how you got those results and we find out you got to those results the most underhanded way possible, the results now have an asterisk.
So let me ask this question. One guy grinds his ass off and becomes a millionaire. Next guy wins the lottery and becomes a millionaire Or better yet the millions was handed down from inheritance. Is that persons money not respected? Is that money any less valuable ? Results is what matters winners determine history.
Better yet go to your job everyday and never complete a task ur job requires you to complete and tell your boss u worked really hard every day just can’t get it done and see what happens
@@Juniorgong11 first of all the overall premise is success/winning so that work comparison with no results doesn’t apply. And in regards to the earned millions vs lottery/inheritance, duh the money isn’t less valuable but no one cares about a lottery winner, they usually go broke fast because they don’t know the value of the money because they didn’t work for it and have to manage it. The inheritance millionaire is sometimes the same with money management and no one respects a person with daddy’s money unless they flip it and do something even better with it.
Everyone loves an underdog who bust their ass and came from nothing to a millionaire. They’re always more respected..
🤔Y’all know what the irony is? How’d Kobe always get away with talkin’ tuff when we all saw Chris Childs bless him w/a Popeyes special?
I just feel the need to remind people that you do not have to make other people feel small in order for you to be big. I am a Kobe Bryant fan. Grew up watching his games, but it is always distressing to hear these types of stories about him.
I am hyper competitive. Former college athlete. Emmy nominee. Have a decent résumé for the professional tracks that I have chosen. I never understood people who thought they had to bully other folks in the workplace.
I have been bullied, and I have watched people regret that they did it to me. It’s not just that I am a high achiever, and I’m going to overcome regardless. It’s also that life has a way of bringing that energy back into your life. When you are mean and hateful to folks, it’s just a matter of time before that comes back to you.

I’m with Kobe on this one. I would have no respect if my co-worker was lazy or didn’t put in the work
I get where people coming from on the disrespect side, but I totally understand challenging someone and seeing how they act. As Gil said the people who are cool with Kobe showed up. They met the challenge and showed him that they are equally as invested at this thing as he is. He may have come across to some as an asshole which even those who love him might agree. But he was a leader and trying to make everyone better, so he wouldn't have to do it all himself even though he fucken would, and win. Now I ain't comparing myself or my brother to Kobe, but we used to do the same shit when we worked in this industrial freezer for this big ass distribution company. This man ain't start out as my brother but as a co worker. I was the lead in the freezer and he got hired and volunteered to come in there cuz he was game to work. At first I just taught him the basics because I wanted to see how he worked. This man may have been raw but he fucken worked. Any order for any customer he was game to select. He would ask questions when need be but he just worked harder till he learned how to do it smarter. After a week or two I stopped him while we were selecting and talked with him. And told him I see you doing this and this and that's awesome I can see you learning the product and the orders and you getting better. Here's some tips and tricks to make your life easier and make you better. He took that and ran with it. We then began kicking it after work drinking some beers and talking story. A week or 2 later he comes up to me as we are about to start our shift and he goes I'm coming for your case count tonight. Tonight's the night I beat you. And it caught me off guard because as much as we would talk shit and joke it was never work related. Keep in mind he said this in front of other team members some who I had trained and some who had been there for a hot minute who's respect I had earned. And without missing a beat I turned to him and said " on your best day you couldn't catch me even at my worst " and the challenge was born. Looking back at it either one of our comments would've made some people fold but it brought out a competitive mindset in us that a lot of people didn't understand. Some people thought and still think we hate eachother from the way we used to go at one another, we'd argue at times, and be cursing at eachother. But we found that we both hate to lose more than either of us love to win. I worked with that man for 6 years, when people ask me how he's doing now I tell them "my brother is doing good, I just was at his house this past weekend" my life was forever changed from meeting this man. I love him to death, our families hang out all the time, birthdays, beach days , BBQs . See you this weekend Eli, I'll have the beers cold and you'll have the grill hot.

Most of you in these comments have no idea who Kobe was as a player. I’m from Philly and we knew more than his fans in Los Angeles. There are countless stories about Jordan, Magic, KG, Bird and others doing the same type of thing. When Byron Scott first got to the Lakers, Magic Johnson didn’t speak to him until he proved himself. This was a way to motivate the player to prove that he was worthy. Kobe didn’t hate Smush personally, just his work ethic. When opposing players used to get the best of Gasol, Kobe would call him out publicly, and tell him to “put his big boy pants on”. It toughened Pau up and made him a 2X champion, and they became the best of friends. Lakers fans know that Kobe grabbed Smush and gave him the biggest hug after his steal against the Suns in the playoffs… so stop with the BS!
Kobe should not have disrespected Parker has a Human.
I loved it when Gilbert played for the Warriors.
That helicopter line is crazy
Basically Kobe thought chu was a lame azz ninja simple 😂😂😂
You get back what you give out in life. Beware how you treat people.
Crazy he flexed the helicopter and that pride came before the fall crazyyyyyy
Psychological warfare.
For a teammate, it’s meant for you to rise to the occasion and shut him up. For a competitor, it’s meant to demoralize.
Right or Wrong.
He should have kept trying to make polite small talk just to bother Kobe.
If Smush is telling the truth than Kobe was out of pocket. But Smush shouldve handled that situation.
Kobe Bryant isnt here to tell his side of the story. So we'll never know.
There's a lot of players who don't have Kobe accolades & he's cool with them. So that tells me there's more to the story.
But instead of talking about Kobe & he's not here to defend himself, Smush should talk about the good things his teammates said about him & great moments in his career. If any.
I mean if Kobe were apart of the new nba where superstars are the GMs also, he would’ve just traded smush and not even said a word like Lebron does to every teammate he doesn’t approve of
I miss Kobe, I wasn’t a Kobe fan but his presence is truly missed, but hell fucking no. Can’t treat me that way no matter who you are…
