This is a whole step down from the original key! Sounds great! THANK YOU for lowering it for him, because unless you check you can't tell and it still sounds great. . . I don't know why they don't do this kind of thing more often for performers. . . it's so easy in the digital age.
He has the most "wildhorn" voice ever! And one of the best "charming-villain faces" (and facial expressions) I've ever seen. He could have been a perfect Dracula or Montecristo!
I got to see Michals 3 times as Chauvelin. aka Chau chau. :o) Caught him twice in CT when the Pimpernel first went on tour & then again in PA as it came back around. He was great! Terrence Mann is still my fav, but then the OBC had a powerhouse with Mann, Andreas, & Sills together. They just magnified each other's talent. Thanks for sharing that!
I saw him as part of the Congregation in the stage adaption of Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame(his feature roles being Father Dupin during The Bells of Notre Dame, and as the Official at the top of the Act 1 finale Esmeralda) at La Jolla Playhouse, and I agree 100%! He was one of my favorite Ensemble voices, and it's no wonder he would also understudy for Patrick Page as Frollo too!
Yay! Thank you for putting this back on TH-cam. This (or a video very similar) had been up previously, but had been taken down. And the world needs more Chauvelin. :3
I like it better in this key. Every Chauvelin you see on You tube or anywere seems to be grabbing their nuts to sing the G at the end anyway. Let guy act and sing the crap out of it for goodness sakes! Usually I hate changing keys, but even Terrance Mann and Rex who I have worked with could have used this key.... It is power to have resonance and confidence.
Guys...I have been singing for years, and this man is NOT struggling on an F. He nails that F, and the locked jaw is for dramatic effect. No need to hop on youtube and rip on a professional singing his heart out.
Totally agree. This man is one of the most amazing baritones I've ever heard. Got to hear him perform this 7 times back in 2001. Goose bumps. Very nice person, also.
Hey I'm singing it anyway, join me! But I'm also a contralto so I can hit the baritone notes. If you gotta take it up an octave there's no shame in that! ❤
Hunt for this man Comb the city, every street, every grate You put a guard at every gate Drag him out, shout the moment that you find him! Damn! Knock in the doors, lock up the city Track him down through this town And be quick about it...now! How the devil can I ever prevail when I'm only a man? I can never be duped by that scurrilous phantom again I wasn't born to walk on water I wasn't born to sack and slaughter But on my soul, I wasn't born To stoop, to scorn, and knuckle under A man can learn to steal some thunder A man can learn to work some wonder But when the guantlet's down, It's time to rise and climb the sky And soon the moon will smoulder And the winds will drive Yes, a man grows older but his soul remains alive All those tremulous stars still glitter I will survive! Let my heart grow colder and as bitter as a falcon in the dive There was a dream, a dying ember There was a dream, I don't remember But I will resurrect that dream Though rivers stream and hills grow steeper For here in hell where life gets cheaper Oh, here in hell the blood runs deeper And when the final duel is near I'll lift my spear and fly Piercing into the sky and higher And the strong will thrive Yes, the weak will cower while the fittest will survive If we wait for the darkest hour Till we spring alive Then with claws of fire, we devour like a falcon in the dive These are the days! Yes! Days of glory, days of rage, and the dream And the dream of Paris preys on my bones Gnawing night and day and clawing through my brain and No, never kneel! Never bend! Rend him to bits! Bite! Oh the beauty of the fight! I'm not a man to hunger for blood, but the spirit can cry To be younger and fiercer and fly Piercing into the sky and higher And the strong will thrive Yes, the weak will cower while the fittest will survive If we wait for the darkest hour Till we spring alive Then with claws of fire, we devour like a falcon in the dive!
Does anybody know what key thi is in or what note that last note is? And where/how I can get the sheeet music in this key? Please help!!! Cheers guys :)
I concur. It's ridiculous to think he's "struggling" with it. I'm a rather young and inexperienced baritone myself, and even -I- don't struggle with an F. No, the problem was that the note was slightly too low to sound like this singer's "money note", so he fixed it by intentionally putting more force and drama behind it than he normally would. That's probably where people are getting the idea that he's struggling, but it's certainly not the case.
Then don't go watch musical theatre. Seriously, musicals are more about the story. Yes, it's great to have someone who can sing well, but a good musical actor isn't the one who sings perfectly. It's the one who can perform and cover up their personal flaws. Also, it's not uncommon for music to be lowered a step or two for actual performances.
as a tenor, it bugs the crap out of me when keys get lowered. dont get me wrong, he performs it well but i prefer the original key..... it has more power
As a bass, it bugs the crap out of me when the original key is too high. Don’t get me wrong, there are amazing tenors in the world, but we need more repertoire for all voices. I’m glad they were able to lower the key for him; I don’t think that should be perceived as a negative.
This is one of the best versions I have heard! I love the richness of his voice. He is the ultimate Chauvelin!
His intensity and prestige is immense! Vampiric, dour, haunting, sensual, and such scorching bitterness and rage
I LOVE this man's voice. It's absolutely perfect for this song
A really powerful and thrilling performance!
Wow, so much passion. I love that his gaze is so intense he doesn't even have to gesture or move his hands.
This is a whole step down from the original key! Sounds great! THANK YOU for lowering it for him, because unless you check you can't tell and it still sounds great. . . I don't know why they don't do this kind of thing more often for performers. . . it's so easy in the digital age.
Saw him in Philadelphia. He was the best part of the show.
The best Chauvelin out there. His "Where's the Girl?" is the sexiest thing I've ever seen onstage.
Wow i rarely like anyone other than the originals but this guy is terrific
This guy would make a good Dracula. Actually, he looks like he's wearing fangs in this video.
By golly you’re right. Agreed
He'd probably also make a great Count Von Krolock in Tanz Der Vampire too, I'll say!
He has the most "wildhorn" voice ever! And one of the best "charming-villain faces" (and facial expressions) I've ever seen. He could have been a perfect Dracula or Montecristo!

Amazing performance; I strongly regret the musical never was shown in France (or if it was I missed it).
Wow and I thought Terrance Mann had a deep voice! This guy is awesome!
Absolutely exceptional! This performance is addicting!
Dude's got PIPES!!! Dayum! You can just feel the torment in the song!
OMG he was awesome in SF when I saw him and a nice person too!!
I have seen him in South Pacific on Broadway in Lincoln Center recently and he is amazing!

His voice is chillignly stunning! It doesn't really sounds lower to me, but I'm probably wrong. His voice just sounds deep.
I saw him in South Pacific last night. He was absolutely amazing!
This is the first time I've ever heard this song. I have goosebumps!
Yay! Thank you for putting this back on TH-cam. This (or a video very similar) had been up previously, but had been taken down. And the world needs more Chauvelin. :3
How can a song with these lyrics be so sexy?
bravo!!!! me encanta!!!
I like it better in this key. Every Chauvelin you see on You tube or anywere seems to be grabbing their nuts to sing the G at the end anyway. Let guy act and sing the crap out of it for goodness sakes!

Carlos Martin what key is it?

Oooooo, that last note! O_O Awesome!
it is in the original key, it was written for a baritone.
@bariton85 That's "struggling" for an F? What does it mean to not "struggle", that was spot on.
He looks like Christopher Lee from certain angles.
Agreed
This guys makes me wanna sing this song (even I’m a woman❤️❤️)
Hey I'm singing it anyway, join me! But I'm also a contralto so I can hit the baritone notes. If you gotta take it up an octave there's no shame in that! ❤
@@Usedw0tm8😊❤ wow you must be amazing in singing this
😅 For me, I’m perhaps somewhere between a contralto and a mezzo-soprano
He souds great, He remind me Steve Barton's Von Krolock
Hunt for this man

I thought he nailed that last note.
He could play a young Chris Lee 🤩
Does anybody know what key thi is in or what note that last note is? And where/how I can get the sheeet music in this key? Please help!!! Cheers guys :)
Did you ever find out the key this was in?
When was this recorded
@00rabbit7 So what?
I concur. It's ridiculous to think he's "struggling" with it. I'm a rather young and inexperienced baritone myself, and even -I- don't struggle with an F. I agree as far as it goes, but if the singer can't hit the note it loses a lot of power as he shifts out of belt to reach it.
Why is it so fast????
Wrong note should be a G4
It's called transposition...
It seems a bit Rushed
