    Congratulations on your beautiful babbbbyyy! I also love Ashley. Everything about her is stunning!
    I have a question about letting your products dry! I know you don’t have to wait reeaalllyy, but one thing I’ve been struggling with recently is using a serum after by AHA/BHA exfoliating toner. If I apply my niacinamide, HA etc serum after, it almost....reacts with the toner and starts to create a foam! Do you think this is just the AHA/BHA texting or do you think this is down to a specific ingredient reaction? 🤔

      James Welsh I’m not Susan but am a subscriber of yours too. Because BHA is oil soluble it needs an emulsifier or solubilizer of some kind to suspend it in a water based product. I’ve noticed that many affordable formulations like The Ordinary salicylic acid and the Cos de Baha one use Curcylic 40. This is essentially a water soluble salicylic acid made by dissolving the SA into Cocamidopropyl Dimethylamine and sold to companies as well as individual formulators. If you see those two ingredients together in the ingredients list then you know it’s likely that and every single product I’ve tried with this combination like the TO one and Cos de Baha lathers up like you describe. So I mainly think it’s a characteristic of BHA and how it’s being dissolved or emulsified.
      I have to say I disagree with Susan. I’m not a fan of the 20-30 minute “wait times” you see in Korean beauty circles and think everyone should use a low PH cleanser anyway and not worry about a PH adjusting toner. But I do think chemical exfoliants should be applied and allowed to absorb and dry down before proceeding with your routine - takes a minute or two max. Because otherwise, you’re applying that PH dependent active on your face and then immediately diluting it with your next product. You want your AHA and BHA to be able to do its thing and really penetrate the skin as much as possible. I also about migration. Applying another product immediately can result in exfoliating acids getting in the eyes and other sensitive areas. So I advise letting chemical exfoliants dry down and then proceed. There’s no need to wait between other products though.

      James use Rosehip oil after exfoliation then a mild moisturizer as it seal the deal best. Because our skin becomes very dry even it's oily skin and craves more moisture. Using serum or toner afterwards, I find it doesn't really work better for our skin after exfoliation.

    Hey Susan,
    Any chance you could do a video of something along the lines of “top rated estheticians” or “what to look for in an esthetician”. I always hear you mention them and although I do have a dermatologist for the big stuff I’d like to know what to look out for with the smaller or daily care issues from an esthetician.
    Thanks xx

    • @skinsciencebymira
      @skinsciencebymira 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Emily Lerman a regular esthetician requires as little as a 4-6 month program in some states. That’s really not enough time to really understand skin anatomy and function, ingredients in skincare, all the treatments, and more. Especially when they’ve also got to learn about waxing, regulations, etc.
      Once you’ve completed your regular esthetician program you can go on and get more training to become a medical esthetician (also known as a master esthetician to some). They typically work under dermatologists, in med spas, or even under plastic surgeons. In addition to having more training than a regular esthetician, they also perform treatments that are more medical in nature and work with better skincare too which can include prescription medication since they work with doctors often.
      I personally just find that medical estheticians have a better understanding of the skin and use a more evidence based approach. I’ve come across many regular estheticians that weren’t very knowledgeable (and some that were of course) but almost every medical esthetician I’ve met has really known their stuff. Penn Smith Skincare here on TH-cam is an excellent example.

    • @AllTheArtsy
      @AllTheArtsy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You're 19. Don't over complicate things. Just get a nice, gentle cleanser like a Cetaphil or Cerave. Then moisturize, again Cetaphil and Cerave have good ones. And then sunscreen (choose one you like the consistency of and will use daily). Get a balm for your lips. Don't go crazy on actives, you have no need for them. Just, cleanse, moisturize and protect.

    • @notpenda
      @notpenda 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Absolutely! So my skin type is dry. I use the CeraVe foaming facial cleanser and I like it because it doesn’t strip my skin. It leaves it soft and hydrated. Then I tone with pixi glow tonic only 3 times a week because it’s is a glycolic acid toner which is an exfoliater so I can’t over do it and then for the rest of the week I use Dickinsons pore perfecting toner. Then occasionally I use Neutrogena Hydro boost face mask to bring moisture back into my skin about one every two weeks. Then I moisturize with Neutrogena water gel moisturizer. And in the morning I use spf 50 from Neutrogena to close it off. My main focus is to combat dryness which is why my routine has so much hyaluronic acid in it. And then we can’t forget about the lips so I close it off with coco butter Vaseline and I wake up with the softest lips ever. I hope that helps. Don’t worry. You are going to find a routine that’s best suited for you. It took me months to even pick these products. Months of research but I still have to try them out and see what’s right for me.

      P Daniels if you’ve been doing nothing start w a super basic system:
      AM:
      cleanse
      moisturize
      SPF
      PM:
      remove SPF and makeup with an oil cleanse
      regular cleanse
      moisturize
      for a cleanser i recommend the cerave hydrating cleanser! it’s good for all skin types bc what makes it so good is that it just doesn’t strip the skin. people talk about toners a lot but i personally don’t think you need a toner unless your cleanser is throwing your skin off balance. so, using such a gentle cleanser renders it useless.
      for moisturizer i recommend “natural moisturizing factors” from the ordinary. it’s super basic and lightweight, absorbs super fast. a great moisturizer, especially for beginners who aren’t used to greasy or heavy products.
      SPF a lot of people use the neutrogena hydroboost and say it’s amazing. i’ve been using the barerepublic but am gonna try the neutrogena after.
      the oil cleanse can be a 100% pure (noncomedogenic) oil, but i like ones that are formulated for an oil cleanse bc they’re easier to take off. i hear the burt’s bees one is really really good! i use a bareminerals one that’s a bit pricier but i always get it on sale and it lasts me 4 months
      if you have any particular skin concerns id be happy to help but as for just starting out cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting from the sun is top priority. once you’re used to doing that every day it’s great to add active ingredients that will improve texture, clarity, brightness, etc. and also potentially extra hydration boosts. but def start with just getting used to doing a routine first.
      edit: typo
      another edit: also the ordinary has a squalane oil cleanser that i really like. it’s just a little less soothing bc it starts out more balm-like and thick and becomes liquidy with a bit of friction and warmth, but it’s really great and you can get it in a 1oz to try first

    • @notpenda
      @notpenda 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      All you really need is a cleanser, a moisturizer, and an spf to start off with a routine but I’m extra so I added two toners. Lol!

      Neela Diaz I would disagree on the chemical exfoliants. Letting the BHA or AHA dry down for a minute means that you’re not diluting those PH dependent actives and letting it penetrate your skin. Going in with your next product right away could also result in that exfoliating acid getting in your eyes or in other sensitive areas. Aside from that though you definitely don’t want to wait between other products and again, a minute at the very most after AHA or BHA. You want to keep in as much hydration as possible.

      MB correction is annoying af. It’s not helpful when someone comes in on their high horse and corrects you without even explaining why or what they’re correcting. Some of us do speak multiple languages not just English you know, but it’s always y’all one language only-speak-English-ass-mother-fu’ers that do the correcting. Y’all aren’t better than anyone so stop it. Instead of waisting time annoyingly correcting others why not use that time to actually learn another language or idk be a TA for an English professor so you can actually have an excuse and real reason to correct people. This however, isn’t an essay or anything of that sort so leave people tf alone because the point of language is to communicate and we all understood them just fine so they effectively communicated and that’s all that matters in a situation like this.

    Laughing at the fact that people have to try and sound embarrassed that they wash their hair every 5 days and or every 3 days.
    The more you wash it, the oilier it gets because you are manually and chemically excreeting the natural oils from your scalp every time you touch it. And most people use wayyyy too much conditioner and don't wash it out properly.
    It can definitely be challenging to get your scalp to a certain stage of not needing to be washed to often, BUT it is totally worth it. I wash my hair only once every 10-14 days depending on activity level/weather etc. I only use a small amount of shampoo to cleanse and then almost never condition and my hair could not be healthier. Might use a pea sized amount of conditioner only on the very ends once every few months.

      Brittany Myers Skincueticals has a patent on C serums containing L-Ascorbic Acid at a PH level of 2.5 to 3. DE C Firma has a slightly higher PH so I don’t think the lawsuit will amount to much.

    Quick tip - I think susan briefly alluded that Vitamin C is fat soluble. This might be true for skincare (i'm no expert here), but in terms of oral vitamin C that you take as a tablet/powder etc., that one is definitely a water-soluble vitamin. Take those tablets with water for better absorption. In contrast, vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, so that's why you'll hear doctors often tell you to take vitamin D tablets with MILK or with FOOD, because it definitely aids in its absorption. Hope that makes sense - Happy days :)

    May i ask a real question? NOT HATE. Just actually curious.
    If you care so much about skincare, you *must* know how bad it is for the skin to wear a thick full face of makeup daily. You wear a lot of makeup. And you do you. Just thinking it's very contradictory to "taking care of your skin"..?? Also, if a person has great skin, WHY would you hide that clear skin in a mask of foundation. we never get to see the clear skinned face. I think that's such a shame. Makeup definitely causes pimples and irritants. So... why? :)

    I will say for the toothpaste that if your toothpaste doesn't contain flouride: please get a new one. It's important to make sure your teeth don't just look nice, but truly are strong, since dental issues can cost a fortune to fix and, depending on the issue, have a significant negative impact on your overall health. Brushing and getting rid of plaque is the main objective, but flouride strengthens them and makes them more resilient.
