Did not quite go to plan on the Beara Peninsula - Healy Pass

- A day out where I didn’t get to complete the chosen route. Hungry Hill was the main target for the day, with two smaller peaks, Coombane and Derryclancy, which were no bother.
I just didn’t feel up to it, neither physically or mentally. Watching it back it looked like I was kind of blaming the weather, but it wasn’t the weather that caused the incompletion, it was 100% down to me.
Will have to see where to from here, as I just didn’t feel great that day for some reason.
Hope to redo this route and complete it later in the year…. We’ll see…

My cousin Walter Fruland, worked for NASA and was assigned to Neil Armstrong’s family as Neil stepped onto the moon and he told me that they also had to make a smart decision up there and use some duct tape to repair part of the lander before they could take off! It worked and history was complete! It pays to use your head!
Oh wow , I knew duct tape was handy and always have a roll around but that is not something I would have ever thought it would be used for, I really enjoy these little bits in the comments section, always great to hear.

I cant believe I missed this video for some reason. My wife and I took our first trip to Ireland in March 2024. During our trip I found out my grandmother was born and raised in Adrigole. She passed before I was born but my Aunt has passed along information about where she was born. I'm already planning my next trip over and this is definitely on the list. Thank you Eddie.
Hi Mike, sounds like ye had a great trip and also finding out all that history must really add a different sense to the area. In case you missed it, the Cashelkeelty video is from the same peninsula, just on the north side of the mountains in this video. A lot of old history in the area by the look of it, I can’t wait to get back down there. Thanks again Mike. 👍🏻

Eddie, the drone shots were very cool at the start👍The rock formations, the golden light and that very clear air made for spectacular views. Love those big pools of water that you come across in the hills👍 Hungry Hill did look a fair challenge - that was quite the conversation you had with yourself to make a change to your plan ( a conversation I am familiar with)😊 Two new peaks is pretty cool👍
Thanks Gerry, there were a few moments with the drone I didn’t think I’d be getting it back. There are a few wobbles in the footage that had me concerned to say the least🤣🤞🏻.
It’s very spectacular scenery and hopefully the next time I head back I’ll be able to do it, just wasn’t at the races that day.
A lot of conversations are had with oneself on the hills I reckon. 😉🤔

It ended up being the right choice alright, especially how the weather turned. I’d like to say it was well thought out, but I just didn’t feel I was able to complete it and that was the deciding factor it much. Always another time

Brilliant video Eddie, the scenery down there is truly spectacular. I love how you captured the whole ruggedness of the mountains, I’m definitely gonna have to get down there this year! Love the poles, can’t be without them. I done a video last year in the snow where someone actually stole my poles and I had to go on, it was horrendous! Here, thanks for sharing and ATB!
Hi Gary, yea, I think we're spoilt for choice down there alright, am lucky to be so close (relatively) even though sometimes it seems like ages away. What type of animal would steal poles?? and especially in snow!!! that's a whole other level of scumminess. Thankfully I don't usually meet anyone to do that where I go, something I hadn't thought of before on the hills. thanks again...
Always wise to go as far as you can and feel comfortable with. There’s always another day.

They said “Failure is not an Option” on Apollo 13 and yes that was true but that was up there. You were down here in what resembled a moonscape and made a courageously smart decision!
It’s a very different landscape alright to where I usually go, and only a relatively short distance to boot. Already looking forward to seeing how different it looks in the summer. Thanks Gary 👍🏻
We all have those days, Ed. I turned around yesterday thinking the climb back uphill would be too much even though it was probably very doable. You cover more miles than 99% of the rest so there's not much to worry about 👍💪 Stunning views and content as usual.

Thanks Robert, when I realised I’d forgot them there was a flood of swearing at the van, and especially for the type of ground. I don’t think it would have got me up Hungry Hill, but as you say, it’s going nowhere.
There were two moments with the drone I thought I’d be spending the day on a drone recovery mission. The wind gusts at the pass actually stopped the drone, we got away with it tho, thankfully. 🛩️
Great area that i find not a lot of people don't take the time to explore. Was there in Sept of last year and had the place to myself besides all the goats lol
That’s great when you get the place to yourself pretty much, especially in September, I would have thought it would be busy. Any wildlife when you’re on the hills I find is always a welcome sight. It’s a spectacular area alright. 👍🏻
Probably a good call Eddie. I did that exact route years ago and it was the wettest I've ever been in the hills. Got no views either so I'll probably have to do it all again some time to get some photos.
Hi Adrian, thanks. I’d been looking forward to doing that route for some time so it stung a bit not getting it done, was all down to me not being able for it. And yeah, it was wet pretty much from the start. Thankfully I had the views and as you see they are fantastic, even just getting to Derryclancy was worth it. Hope you get the weather the next time 🤞🏻

Stunning way. But as I’ve realised, that you are planning to go for hungry hill from Healy pass I thought at once that’s very hard, and a far way. I wouldn’t do hungry hill from there. 😳 I think the way from there to Knockowen and then to Cushnaficulla is cool. Stands on my list. 👍

Go for Mullaghanattin. That is a great hike. And that mountain is stunning. Go from the west via Bean. That’s unbelievable.
@@celtictiger78I did Mullaghanattin on Patrick’s day two years ago. An absolutely stunning spot that I’d hope to return to last year, but it just didn’t happen, yet again. My list is getting longer every day. 🤣

Hi Christian, for these more remote ones I use an Irish hillwalking site here called www.Mountainviews.ie
There’s a wealth on hiking info, just be aware that these folks that post the info are well experienced and sometimes what they might say is easy, I would find tough. It’s free to sign up to. It really is great tho.
Also, I found the Adrian Hendroff walking guides for Dingle and Beara fantastic for walk overviews. 👍🏻
Edit. I should also mention the app HiiKER, I recently started using it and has better maps and has this route also.
@@eddieforde Hey Eddie, awesome thanks for this detailed reply. I've done the trip from Healy pass to Hungry hill on the weekend and it was fantastic. After Hungry Hill I followed the path down to the Beara Way and returned from there to Healy Pass. At times the trail is a bit technical, but well worth it. So again thanks for your video. I wouldn't have come up with that tour on my own 😀

Great call on calling it quits Eddie,. Back in Feb 2020 I was doing the same route and when I got to Derryclancy I also made the correct call and turned back due to extreme winds and heavy squalls, safe in the knowledge that the mountain wasn't going anywhere and I'd soon be back, little did we know was coming down the track!!!
I eventually completed the route in April 2020 and the underfoot conditons were also alot more favourable!
thanks for that Prometheus. I just wasn't up for it that day, just felt flat. As it turned out, I was lucky as the weather that blew in wasn't great. Much like yourself , I hope to get it done later in the summer... 👍
