Last year I purchased what appeared to be a Amazon exclusive DJI Mini 4K, it was almost the perfect drone for my needs - ultra compact and was capable of 60p at 2.7k, what it was lacking was a 10-bit LOG or HDR mode. However, I had a feeling that LOG would be coming and I am very glad I didn't splash out on something more expensive. My only concession with this model, is will be much more difficult to pack along side my regular kit. Also, I don't think I'll be using that audio-filter mode any time soon.
Just know it's not actually LOG, D-Log M is not D-Log. It's still rec709, it's basically a flat profile and not actually a real LOG profile. For proper LOG you have to buy the Mavic line (or the Inspire line) like the Mavic 2 Pro or the newer Mavic 3 line of drones which have actual LOG profiles.
@LiamMarskog Hey, thanks for the heads up. From my limited research on this it still appears that D-LOG M is 10-Bit, which means that colour grading will still be much easier than on 8-bit video, it is also a very flat profile so dynamic range will also be improved. I'm cool with this, it's like a lite format which would be ideal for me as I'm not a heavy drone user or want to colour grade extensively.
@ Yes, absolutely, it’s 10-bit and it’s def a flat profile so dynamic range is improved. Can never be better than rec709 though which has less than 50% ”room” compared to D-gamut. With that said these small sensors made for smartphones doesn’t have enough dynamic range to begin with to actually take full advantage of D-Log which is probably the reason for D-Log M. D-Log would still be better ofc but not by as much as it’s capable of being better. HLG however should technically hold more dynamic range as rec2020 is much larger than rec709 but again, not sure if you can actually get much more dynamic range out of these sensors anyway. I will be doing some tests about that when i have time and see if it makes a significant difference enough to make it worth it.
Great video guys..and loved lots of Jordan’s side comments! Drone seems like a great tool for,the price and size! I find it tempting, though here in Canada there are almost no places you can fly…National ,Provincal, and Municipal parks generally do not allow (some will with a permit first), still for some backcountry shots could be handy. Although not the best, I thought the office section wasn’t too bad. I wouldn’t typically record that way, my phone probably much better, but it did well enough for use in a pinch.
Maybe dynamic range and noise performance from that small sensor isn't the best, but I'm pleasantly surprised to see that the footage doesn't have that signature unnatural overprocessed look of modern phones. It's very usable.
I use the Fimi mini 3. Its a sub 250g drone with a half inch Sony cmos sensor. Has all the follow modes and so on but lacks the prop guards or the autonomous fly from your hand stuff. It also lacks obstacle avoidance but I would think that would be similar with the DJI. So far I am quite happy with it although there have been a few bugs. They seem to roll out the firmware regularly so so far so good. And it comes in at a 150 bucks cheaper than the Flip. Oh yeah and it's a GPS drone with precision landing and return to home features with a 5 mile range.
looks to me like DJI finally put a Pocket 2 camera guts in a tiny drone. maybe some Pocket 3 tech too. great idea DJI, finally. a drone for the masses.

from what I seen on another review, you can only modify sharpness / noise reduction if using the RC2 controller. if you use the app or the quick modes you are stuck with default settings. If it's the same as Neo, the setting isn't even saved in drone :-/
Regulations in the USA are the same with the FAA regardless of weight and really limit creators here unless we have the pro drone school and permissions

I’ve heard it’s disabled in the us but if you activate it with a different country (EU) and it will have rid. Not sure the validity of this but that’s what I’ve seen.
Isn’t it a bit incongruent to state that you aren’t giving a comparison to other dji drones but then later say that you think this is the first one that you can use in a professional environment? Especially when people have been using the mini 3 pro and mini 4 pro for years at this point.
Well, yeah, it's not a direct comparison to the other drones.. But it is the first one they've used that is sub 250g and offers the feature set like log video and 60p at 4k.
@@jeremyg9305 the phrase, “this is the first [sub 250 gram drone] where I think you can still use it in a professional environment…” is absolutely making a direct comparison to other sub 250g drones and is not saying this is the first that they’ve used that would suit their production needs. Even the title betrays this idea of lack of comparison, although I suspect it’s more intended to generate views
@ItsMidasProductions if that sentence happened, it sure would be.. but that sentence never happened. What did happen was a comparison to the class of drones the Flip is in, which includes the Neo, and because those drones are sub 250g, they too have compromises. Of the drones that can be controlled and used without a controller or phone, this is the first to offer professional level footage quality - a general comparison that isn't aimed at any drone directly.
@@jeremyg930513:30 “the flip really did live up to my expectations. Yes there are some compromises having a sub 250g drone, but this is the first one where I feel like you could still use it in a professional environment…” One, in this case, referencing sub 250g drones.
I wouldn't personally use integrated boots except in situations where I might be trudging through heavy mud and lake bottoms. Maybe for Duck hunting for example. Otherwise I will always go with stocking foot waders and separate boots. If you want some boots for long hikes, the Simms Flyweight boots are built more like a trail shoe and still give plenty of traction on wet rocks.
I don't get your conclusion. Seems like you never heard about the Mini Drones from DJI before. This DJI Flip doesn't give you any more then a Mini 3 Pro, Mini 4 Pro or even Cheaper Mini 3 gives you in terms of Image Quality. There are Sub 249g drones out there that are much better for Video use, for example the Mini 4 Pro is more expensive but has all around obstacle avoidance. All 3 mentioned drones have a vertical camera mode and substantially longer flight times. They are just missing the voice commands and new AI Stuff. But I guess a Mini 3 or 4 will do much better in higher winds as well.
I was thinking the same and I know very little about drones. I photograph weddings and it's rare to work with a videographer with a drone that's not a DJI mini in one form or another
I am the only one annoyed by the cadence problems in the videos? From time to time there is a jump between frames - and it is not a thing from this drone, I've seen it in a lot of drone reviews and nobody talks about it.
It's also twice the price. To me this drone is for the smartphone filmmaker types or just want to have a fun, easy cheap drone. The difference between the GH7 footage and the drone is quite noticeable so I personally don't think I'd try and combine the 2.
Totally agree, I think the mini 4 pro is much easier to 'use in a professional environment' than this drone...I think the M4P is probably better in every category than this...
Is it true that this drone does not support remote id? This would not allow it to be legally used professionally in the US. Please correct me if I'm wrong. (The most unnecessary comment ever on the internet)

Nope. RemoteID apparently disabled on FLIP flying in US, so not flyable in US airspace as 107.
I’ve heard it’s disabled in the us but if you activate it with a different country (EU) and it will have rid. Not sure the validity of this but that’s what I’ve seen.
Professor Hines
Approved ?! The 😅
Isn’t it a bit incongruent to state that you aren’t giving a comparison to other dji drones but then later say that you think this is the first one that you can use in a professional environment? Especially when people have been using the mini 3 pro and mini 4 pro for years at this point.
totally agree, makes no sense...
Yes there are some compromises having a sub 250g drone, but this is the first one where I feel like you could still use it in a professional environment…”
One, in this case, referencing sub 250g drones.
Ditch the drone. @Chris: Do you use waders with integrated boots? How do they perform on longer backcountry style hikes?
I wouldn't personally use integrated boots except in situations where I might be trudging through heavy mud and lake bottoms. Maybe for Duck hunting for example. Otherwise I will always go with stocking foot waders and separate boots. If you want some boots for long hikes, the Simms Flyweight boots are built more like a trail shoe and still give plenty of traction on wet rocks.
Thankyou@@niccollsvideo . This is very helpful!
RE: photography, I’m not sure if this has a panorama mode.
omg fly fishing business expense is epic
I photograph weddings and it's rare to work with a videographer with a drone that's not a DJI mini in one form or another
Drones, smones... the GH7 footage looks exceptionally nice in that semi-yuck weather...
Could be great if it wasn't for the poor stability against minor winds
Please understand the difference between D-Log and D-Log M. This is the latter, which is not true LOG.
Ironically this is a non-compliant flight in the US for this use, for creators to use, etc. RID isn't enabled for the US market.
I am the only one annoyed by the cadence problems in the videos? From time to time there is a jump between frames - and it is not a thing from this drone, I've seen it in a lot of drone reviews and nobody talks about it.
By next year we will be able to just talk to it. Just follow me but stay in the same position, pan and turn as needed…
Looks great but who is it for and why wouldn’t one just purchase a MINI 4 PRO?
compared to an iphone, the Flip has a VASTLY superior lens though.
❤
I think the Mini 4 Pro is good enough for mixing in with full frame cameras in the sub-250g weight class, and is better than this.
It's also twice the price. To me this drone is for the smartphone filmmaker types or just want to have a fun, easy cheap drone. The difference between the GH7 footage and the drone is quite noticeable so I personally don't think I'd try and combine the 2.
If you already have the M4P you won't need this
Totally agree, I think the mini 4 pro is much easier to 'use in a professional environment' than this drone...I think the M4P is probably better in every category than this...
I'd rather get a mini 3 pro or 4 pro personally
so it wasn’t a prank leak?!
9:55 Life is like a box of chocolate …
12:02 "Absolutely adequate." Not a strong endorsement.
Really painful to hear the last part of the review, can't you connect a wireless mic to the drone?
Is it true that this drone does not support remote id? This would not allow it to be legally used professionally in the US. Please correct me if I'm wrong. (The most unnecessary comment ever on the internet)
The video was so much better in the beginning without the cringe inducing generic music.
What’s the point when you can just buy the neo?!
Any excuse to go fly fishing!
