    I bought them after a lot of back and forth; they are fantastic. I will replace all of my guitars as I go. They are soooooooo accurate and solid. I've never seen a strobe tuner find perfect stability but with these you can creep right up to it. Just fantastic. Do it.

    Great review. This is the kind of thing more guitar brands could pay attention to when trying to market their guitars as something better. Change something that actually makes a noticeable difference.

    Man, Phil. Thanks again! i'm in the market for new tuners on more than one guitar. I want staggered post on one but not necessarily the other, but locking nun the less . i didn't even know these existed until now. and thanks to your so humble , honest and unbiased review , Graph tech will be getting even more money from me. they really are a good company in my opinion as is Hipshot which will be my other supplier. You have a very informative and enjoyable web site! keep it coming. came on board around 68k. once again....KUDOS!

    You missed one of the most cool things about them. You gat an equal amount of pitch change for an equal amount of input. About a half step per half turn on every string. No more cranking & cranking on the high E & overshooting the low E with the slightest turn.

    • @jubuttib
      @jubuttib 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Do you have experience with these tuners? The concept is great, I'm just wondering how accurately it works depending on the string gauge. Their marketing pitch itself says that the ratios are adjusted for the string gauges after all, so 9-42 might behave a bit differently to a 10-46, to an 11-49, to a 10-52, etc.

    • @lightwarriors7778

      @@jubuttib Yea thanks for making this comment as I play thomastik-infeld ac113 low tension silk core .013-.061 gauge on all my acoustics and believe these would not be a viable option for me as I use alternate tunings that are not 432hz or 528hz but is a lower frequency than standard 440hz norms.

      I just saw this, but they are geared based on string core diameters, which don't vary as much as the wound dimensions. In any case, you still have more accuracy on the bass side and don't have to wind so much on the treble side.

Tuning is much easier because when I am 4 cents low, every string needs about the same amount of turn on the tuning key... Did I say AWESOME ... Only problem was the tuning paltes sent by them for doing a Pawn Shop 72 Special from Fender the plates did not line up. All the rest of the guitars worked perfectly. I only buy the locking tuner keys

    I have this Lyon brand Strat-like guitar I bought at a pawn shop for $60. I ended up getting a Warmoth pickguard for it that I custom ordered because I only wanted one angled humbucker for the bridge. I then got a Seymour Duncan Invader to install....it became a favorite guitar. Perfect for Pop-Punk tunes. For years I have struggled to find quality tuners for this instrument because the "economic" diagonal tuners were all that would fit. I was always intrigued by these Ratio tuners, now seeing that they offer the adapter that fits this cheap config is what sold me. In the past, I considered replacing the neck just to have better tuners, but the neck is one of the huge reasons I love this pawn shop treasure....I know that eventually I would have plugged the old screw holes and got good tuners....but now I don't need to. This is awesome!

    I bought a Tele with the standard rectangular box tuners with a screw on each side, all in line for all six strings. It drives me insane. I have to tune it after every song or exercise. I spend 30% of my play time tuning especially 2, 3, and 4, and 1 about half the time. I bend a lot and I know locking tuners aren't going to help me if they don't have a high ratio. All I can do now is put twice as many peg rounds/winds on the next string set. Is this still best thing? Do they lock as well?

  • @SnahLhug

    I've been wanting a set of these for a while. The thing that keeps me away is that a lot of the bad reviews come from the fact that the lowest key has such a high gear ratio, thus the teeth are so small that they strip under tension. I wonder how the guarantee policy is on these...

It's a 300 Canadian dollar guitar, and with those upgrades, it's going to cost me about an extra 400 Canadian dollars, and I feel it'll be able to hold it's own against most 800-1000 Canadian dollar guitars.

    Sorry to critique, but... The main advantage would be tuning stability? Does it make tuning more stable? Especially for drop tunings? Or no? What about extreme drop tunings? Simple tuning accuracy saves a little time, but that's a tiny benefit in comparison to something like tuning stability.

    Yeah but new tuning keys are a sore spot for me. Because they don't sell them in packs of seven or eight
    Also this guy is so underrated.

      No, I was thinking they would be heavy, but They were the same as the original tuners.

    Just bought the gator grip using the link you provided. And the gator grip is too small. It cant reach the nut to unscrew it. Just thought you might want to change the link so other people don't make the same mistake i did.

      Just bought a set of these and don't have to tools to install them. What is the correct size I should be using to unscrew the nuts. I don't want to strip or damage these really expensive tuners.

    What's the purpose to have a higher ratio on the thicker strings than on the higher strings? Shouldn't it be the other way around. High notes are easier to detect as flat or sharp, so I don't see the point of it being as it is...

    • @heathbarnhart1092
      @heathbarnhart1092 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Go to 00:37 and pause, you can read the notes. It actually does make sense, the thicker have more tension in them so you need a finer touch to get it in tune, thus the higher gear ratio.

    • @tzd
      @tzd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      On traditional tuning keys with the same ratio across all 6 strings, the thicker strings will change pitch more quickly than the thinner strings for the same amount of turn you put in the key. The point of different gear ratios is that when you tune each and every string, the gear ratio balances out with the thickness of the string so that you turn the 'same amount' of turn on each string to achieve the 'same amount' of change in pitch of the note.
      This makes tuning feel very natural across all 6 strings - it provides the same feel when you turn the key of each and every string. When Phil says that he 'goes past the note' and had to tune back when using the Fender original tuners, it is not really because the Fender tuners have play in them, but because on that low E string, a small turn of the original tuning key causes a big change in the note, hence it is easy to over-shoot.
      With the higher ratio of the Ratio Tuner on that string to balance it out, you need to turn more to get up to the note, hence you feel that you have finer grained control over the tuning and can get up to pitch more easily without overshooting.
      I have been using Ratio tuners on one of my guitar for years and love it.

      The main point is now every sting reacts the same to any tuning adjustments, 1/2 turn = 1/2 tone!

      I assume that's at E standard. How does that hold up at, say, C standard?

    • @GraphTechGuitarLabs
      @GraphTechGuitarLabs 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It actually doesn't matter what tuning you're in, and they work the same for pretty much any string set. Since all the strings will work the same in relation to each other. So they're great for going in and out of different tunings.
