  • Father John Murphy a peaceful priest turned rebel leader
A ‘Radharc’ documentary looking at the story of 1798 hero Father John Murphy of Boolavogue, County Wexford. His exploits are celebrated in the folk song ‘Boolavogue’. The local curate led a People’s Army against the Crown forces and was executed at Tullow.
Presenter Father Peter Lemass examines the motives and that turned Father Murphy from a peaceful priest, who initially persuaded his parishioners to give up their pikes, into a rebel leader.
‘Radharc: Boolavogue’ was first broadcast on 18 April 1965. The presenter is Peter Lemass.

Then Father Murphy from old Kilcormick spurred up the rock with a warning cry,
"Arm, Arm" he cried, for I've come to lead you, for Ireland's freedom we fight or die.

You have to remember that very great men and women come about because of unusual happening in life, be it wars, famines, injustice, plagues, etc. People who go to the ends of the earth to help others in need. many of those people get forgotten about with time. Never fear those types of people are all around us all of the time but sometimes it is us who are to blame for not realising the goodness of others. we easily blame others but we would not do their job

With the exception of a few priests the Catholic Church not only opposed the 1798 rebellion priests brought their people to help the troops moving to oppose the French Republican Invaders/liberators. Why? In 1792 the French Revolutionary Government had de-Christianized France confiscating the Churches entire property*. Monks and nuns were thrown on the street with 2 weeks’ notice where many eventually died in poverty. In 2 years few of France’s 40k churches remained open, most had been closed, sold, destroyed, or converted to other use. Ancient monasteries were turned into prisons, priests who did not leave were deported to penal colonies, drowned on barges in the river Loire in batches of a 100. There are claims some priests were tied naked to nuns and then thrown into the river to drown.
They publicly guillotined 18 Carmelite nuns for treason in a single session. In 2 years the Revolution did more damage to the Catholic Church in France and killed more priests than the Saxon protestant tyrant did in 400 years in Ireland. Still wonder why the church supported the oppressors?
Footnote, it was illegal for Catholic priests to be trained in Britain or Ireland, but it was not a problem as they simply went to the English College at Douai in France throughout the penal period. It is ironic that when the French were massacring their own Catholic priests the English and Irish priests as British citizens were spared the terror. The French forced the closure of the English College in 1793, but the Dublin and London governments built Maynooth seminary so that sufficient priests could be educated to meet the needs of the Catholic population. In fact, both governments were breaking their own laws because it was still technically illegal to train Catholic priests in Ireland.
    * The French government still owns the property of the Catholic Church in France. I was surprised to find that when Notre Dame was burned down a few years ago the French government would cover the cost of repairs because it owned it.
One of the other buildings French confiscated was the Great Abbey at Fontevraud where Ireland's French invader Henry II his wife and one of his children are buried. Until late in the 20th century it was a prison but has since being converted into a museum.
