Selene and his twin were born, they were twins but while forming they crashed into eachother making them become one entity. Now they both live but in one body.
And the solar eclipse is when they both have control together. When they both come to the world as one.
Edit: Selene is Luna. His name was changed to Luna when modern life started.

in mine, Darkside's real name is Hecate.
and I chose to interpret him and Luna as "the same body, two consciousnesses" (not necessarily a Chara 2.0, as some people used to interpret the relationship between him and Luna. The closest example of what they are together would be equivalent to Siamese twins )
He and Luna are reincarnations of Theia, with Hecate being the part with genuine memory fragments inherited from Theia and he suffers from constant deja vus and anemoia, which contribute to his existential and identity crisis (he could fit as someone with depersonalization too)
