What he thinks of himself is that he is a monster. A hideous and frightening monster. His parents abandoned him because of this. His parents abandoned him because of his powers. Unfair... He thinks to himself. Why? It's not his fault he was born that way. He thought he would never be loved the way he was, until Aaron came into his life. Aaron was just like him, broken, hopeless. Aaron is someone who had not been accepted by society like him. Two souls, one for the other, who protect each other, who love each other. Aaron had become controlling the longer they were together, but Maverick identified with him so much that he couldn't walk away from Aaron. He couldn't do that. It was too cruel to do that. Aaron was so broken like him, that he felt he couldn't leave Aaron behind. Not in the same way his parents did. Maverick wouldn't make the same mistake as his parents. Maverick was not like his parents, and he never would be. He would never leave his beloved behind.
