      Mike Mellor, Brooklyn, New York. I too was raised in the North of England, born in 1937 and was told about Sowell by a neighbour in New York, who was a black preacher--AME I think. At once I saw Sowell as a kindred spirit and have enthusiastically followed him for more than 40 years. He really enlightens us about the human race, I have (or had) blond hair and blue eyes but have no animosity to those who look different!!! That would be irrational. May I now briefly add a pedantic note--please: discrimination is not the same as prejudice or bigotry.

In a few short sentences Friedman described how colonisation had brought Western Civillization to people who hadn't invented the wheel, how India and Africa under British rule had seen advances completely unseen since. Truly transformed my perspective.

      I owe Milton Friedman a great deal, before I heard just a small piece of his Phil Donahue interview, I was a central planning Technocratic authoritarian, I believed all it took was just the right fine tuning of Government leadership and all the Federal bureaucracies could be set into perfect order. Now I'm more anti-Government than him. I tend to agree more with his Anarcho-Capitalist son David D. Friedman (brilliant man, I love his line from Free to Choose about the Post office and the School system.)

He is a first class scholar, and by that I mean one with an unadulterated dedication to the facts that everyone should emulate. Mr. Riley described him as "humble", but I would add that Dr. Sowell's humility is that rare type which is the result of confidence that comes from competence; he has nothing to prove but the point he is arguing. No one is a saint but Sowell has some unique qualities that young people could benefit from studying.

      His mantra is “I am wholly convinced of my ignorance”. If you try to approach a “new” argument in an area where you have superior knowledge, you might miss big blind spots. I believe making indigenous “reservations” completely free of ALL government regulations would reshape the country.
      Splitting the USA into 50+ separate nations would make our country more influential, and powerful, than the decaying empire we are pumping trillions of life support into each month. When inflation consumes most of the cost of food, gas, and housing- Venezuela isn’t far behind!

    Thomas Sowell has not given up teaching... he has moved to teaching a vastly wider audience. He is the epitome of Alfred Korzybski's 'Time-Binder,' a teacher for the ages. With the break down and corruption of traditional education, Sowell is one of the new breed of teachers who may help us overcome the indoctrination and propaganda which is corrupting K-12, as it has much of 'higher' education.

    I rarely comment on social media but felt compelled to say something about this interview. It's particularly impressive that Sowell didn't want a biographer. It's sad, as Riley said, Sowell has become iconic because he's an intellectually honest scholar, irrespective of where the facts lead, especially during a time when it's academically perilous to be so regarding the topic of race in the US. It's also sad that today, irrespective of the facts, Sowell's views encounter pushback from whites and blacks because they are perceived as insensitive. Riley put it well that Sowell was "cancelled" decades ago because his scholarship didn't support the prevailing and well-intentioned views on race and racial policies in the US. I hope in the coming years fewer people refer to Sowell as a "black" intellectual. He is an influential scholar that has written on a range of topics, internationally and domestically, including race.

    • @benforshizzle
      @benforshizzle 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's unfortunate that his race often comes up when speaking about him. It is convenient however. If you reiterate his ideas to other people they might say these are racist ideas. So naturally the best counter is to point out they come from a "black" economist/intellectual.

    Thomas Sowell is still a glowing beacon of intellectual free thinking, and still so so under-appreciated by the masses - they just dont know what they are missing. May God bless him with many more healthy years among us.

    Thomas Sowell and Jason Riley are premier intellectuals of our time. However; they are not well known in the prominent black community because they are denounced. Many of my black friends with whom I work do not know them.😞

    Jason Riley mentioned that Dr. Sowell is funny. That was something that jumped out at me immediately when I first saw him being interviewed. Peter Robinson constructed this long, carefully detailed, elaborate question covering some muti-faceted, complex issue and without missing a beat Dr Sowell answered,
    "No!"
    Not just "no", but no to all fifteen nuances in the question. Not just no, but aw, come on, it's obvious, of course not-- all expressed in that one, perfectly inflected syllable, and it was very funny.

    Thomas sowell came into my life when I was an economics major in college graduating in 2008. He is in large part why I never made the mistake of being a leftist and one of the reasons why I think of the world in terms of ‘what is the evidence and what is the trade-off?’
