Doom is actually older than thrash and glam.
+Brandon Stroup Technically yes, but it only became a distinct genre/scene in the 80s. Up until then, people mostly just thought about it as the type of oldschool HM that Black Sabbath made for a while. The essentials of the musical style certainly did exist before thrash or glam though, even if it wasn't usually recognized as a separate genre.

Electric Funeral by Black Sabbath is what it sounded most like to me
Brian Lopez Yeah, it's similar but not quite. Electric Funeral is one of the most famous Doom Metal songs, so maybe he adapted the riff from that song.
It's not exactly the same, but it's fairly similar to the main riff from Demon's Gate by Candlemass.
Man you're musically too optimistic forBlack Metal.
+E Arabul It can be much more technical and more ambient.
You couldn't be more wrong, this sounds nothing like any first wave band, it's certainly second wave (norwegian stuff). And he's not being optimistic, norwegian black metal sounds exactly like that. Try Burzum or Darkthrone.
+Platinum Bard hahah You don't need to like Varg to like Burzum, his music is very good even though he has strong ideals(nazi if you like hehe). The riff he plays in the video reminds me of a song but I don't remember exactly which one, but it's certainly norwegian. Check Ea Lord Of The Depths from Burzum. You can always hate the people and love their music, that's what I do heheh. Kidding, I don't hate anyone, just don't agree with them either.
+Platinum Bard That's a little too much don't you think? I don't even buy their stuff but even if I did it wouldn't be as bad as you put. They're bands not political parties. I just care for the music, most of the listeners think like that too.

Glam Metal came before thrash. A lot of early thrash was a reaction to glam metal.
Glam Metal is a misnomer. It is not metal. It's soft rock with additional distortion, wearing spandex and eyeliner.
Patrick Holt That's why thrash was so aggressive in response.
yeah.. no.
I would say about the same time, there was a rivalry there, but I won't say thrash is counter strike to glam. It's more like a product of NWOBHM, Punk and Speed Metal
Slayer and Metallica both started in the Bay area underground in '82. It's close but, I guess actual commercial success came just about the same time ('83-'85??) with the people I hung with transitioned straight from Iron Maiden to Metallica and instantly hated glam. Back then we called them poser metal or hair spray crap. Glam fits better, they weren't posers, they were exactly what they were trying to be...lame...and they certainly got it right lol. You absolutely knew who they were though, I'll give them that...no shame in their 2 cans of spray hair...skin tight parachute pants...100 bandanas wrapped around their wrist...and those freak'n '79-'80-'81 "All show/No go" Cameros with the shackle lift rear ends and their crap blasting out of those tin can sounding 6x9 speakers. Not bad, but between Blues Rock and Heavy Rock, it's missing the Psychedelic Rock which is one of the most important precursors to early Heavy Metal.
Blues rock and progressive rock from the mid 60s into the 70s were by far the most important progenitors of heavy metal. I would go so far as to say that early heavy metal, up until the latter half of the 70s, WAS progressive rock with a pinch of blues rock. Perhaps most evident in bands like Judas Priest.

loool then DragonForce is baroque???
By that definition Green Day would also be baroque because "Basket Case" uses the exact same chord progression. So no, DragonForce isn't baroque.
***** just joking, i know it :D
Yes, also the heavy metal part is similar to iron maiden's phantom of the opera
People getting mad at subgenres are the types of people i hope to avoid for my entire life
cazza710 I'm totally with you
Metaheads complaining about genre is why your metal genres still have honestly. So stop complaining about them.
typing genres is fun. bickering over genres isn't.
Yeah but he missed a couple popular genres though like folk and arguably viking metal
I use to say I listen to rock and metal....today learned I listen to 100 different things
Not gonna lie but the symphonic metal song starting at 4:04 could also be classified as melodic death metal
There are so many things wrong with playing metal on a Porsche guitar, especially black metal
Yeah, black metal is definitely Bentley!
Black metal'd be in something like an old jaguar xk or something. Bentley's too not satanic.
Monky Power Metal is F1 car
Monky i don't think it's a "Porsche" guitar. he just put a Porsche sticker
dont forget progressive vegetarian grindcore
a Porsche sticker on a guitar? hmmm
Blues rock is awesome
Turn down the speed for doom section to .75x
*woah*
band(s) I heard in each segment
Blues Rock: Deep Purple
Heavy Rock: Black Sabbath
Heavy Metal: Iron Maiden
Thrash Metal: Metallica into Megadeth
Glam Metal: Def Leppard
Doom Metal: Candlemass
Death Metal: Death
Grindcore: Napalm Death
Black Metal: Behemoth
Groove Metal: Pantera into Lamb of God
Prog Metal: Dream Theater
Power Metal: Dragonforce
Nu Metal: Deftones
Melodic Death Metal: Amon Amarth
Symphonic Metal: Nightwish
Metalcore: Trivium
Modern Prog Metal: Periphery
Speed metal is too broad of a term imo. Anything with a fast tempo would qualify. This can include everything on this list except doom and maybe black metal. And in regards to Deep Purple not all of their songs are fast-beat
NO BODY True, I don’t deny any of that. It just sounds like a more legato DP or maybe a LZ tune. It’s definitely not like Highway Star, Fireball, etc
I heard Killswitch for metalcore.
Mason 11 what's the name of song at 0:21?
+Dastan Abat, Mason 11 & Inquisitor Titus, That's totally cool if you heard what you thought were specific segments of recorded music by whichever band you believed was being used to represent their respective sub-genres. However, what you actually tuned into was possibly the influence of said bands on Ben Higgins, for whom EVERY sub-genre example is his own original work based on his interpretation of each style. Absolutely NO sub-genre representation is a cover, they are ALL his original music and tabs are available should anyone wish to learn how to play them note for note, because here and in tabs are the only places they exist. NONE of these tabs can be found thru any of the bands you believe you heard...even if you are correct in the bands that influenced what he chose to create as original work representing each sub-genre.
0:34- 0:38 VICTIM OF CHANGES!!!!!
Angel Witch is Life That's definatley in my top-10 song by Judas Priest list!
This isn't a song, it's just a series of riffs....
....and the history is out of order....
So? It's the history of metal in one video, who says it has to be in order?
@@Beanpolr no, if you read the description the claim is "one song" not "one video". Also, you don't have to learn history in order, but something titled "the history of...." should be presented in order.
@@PeteUnsigned is it one single video? Yes.
@@Beanpolr ....."history of metal in one SONG" not "....in one VIDEO"....

There you go!
Mallcore?
A derogatory term for Nu Metal,
DexterZ Will admit, 2007 and later linkin park and papa roach are what I would call mallcore, I think that's painting an entire genre with a wide brush...
KamakaziDaniel 2, Never understood the "Heavy Rock" term. It's pretty much an outdated term for Heavy Metal (70s Heavy Metal)
joseph smith yeah. Linkin Park and Papa Roach are garbo. Korn is the best Nu Metal band to ever exist
Deep Purple
Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Megadeth
Dio (sort of)
Heaven and Hell
Early Amon Amarth
No clue about Grindcore
Immortal
Satriani/Vai
Dream Theater
Dragonforce
Slipknot
Amon Amarth
Nightwish
No clue about Metalcore
Tool
About right? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Leonel Cantú de Llano Deep Purple? Which song? First heavy rock song? Can you tell us the name of that song? Second heavy rock is Black Sabbath (you are right).
lionkingBG Oh no, no no. I never meant to say those were the first! Just the ones that came to mind. For blues rock, there's a clear reference to Stormbringer.
Leonel Cantú de Llano The thrash metal one sounded like early Metallica to me. And the last one is definatly not tool, it's Djent, but i don't know which band.
Thrash metal was not megadeath. It's metallica's metal militia
Leonel Cantú de Llano befor maiden there's judas priest
Power metal sounded a lot like Basket Case - Green Day
same chord progression
+ognen17 canon in d.
It's the pachebel canon. Very famous chord progression; very boring to play on cello.
totispyro I totaly agree with you, and NuMetal is like Linkin Park!
totispyro The рower metal song is Fury of the storm by Dragonforce
As always, Doom metal is the best!
whats the riff?
it's called Djent mate, the modern progressive metal
He said that in the description of the video.
Austin Barton
Oh. My bad!
Prassy Venketesh sounds like gojira
Groove Metal is the shit \.../
André Luís Pantera! Black label society!
You can dance to it!
André Luís It's called stoner rock where I come from.
Every Time I Die
