    To be honest I think one big reason for people selling first hand Leicas is that they think by owning one, their pictures are going to improve drastically, so they get disappointed and sell them. And I guess some still don't understand why their photos didn't improve. I think it's worth investing if you really know what you are doing and know what it takes to (make) a great picture. The camera is just a tool that (takes) pictures, in this case, a luxurious tool. Amen :)

    Patience and favorable market dynamics are not exclusive to Leica purchases. Also non-fixed lens Leicas need lenses which never come cheap.

    I watched you video months ago not imagining I would ever own a Leica. I just happened on your video again so I thought I would comment. I took your advice I searched around The new Leica Q was selling for about 3900 at the the time. Used 2800 to 3400. I found one that was 2800 make an offer on eBay. It had only 200 shots and had a 14 month balance of warranty free Lightroom etc etc never titled. I offered 2400 it was accepted. I was concerned about the dust issues so that's why I was happy their was a warranty. It turned someone bought it in January 2019 for 4250 took 200 shots put it back in the box for a few months then took it to an eBay seller. Now I guess you can buy one for 2400 but not with a warranty and 200 shots on it. It was never registered so all the perks came like I was buying a new camera. I immediately check for dust none and taped up the speaker and mic ports for my mental peace. Whether that works 6000 photos later no dust!

    There was a time when they were a photographer's camera. They still are; the viewfinder/rangefinder system is nice for a certain type of photography and the cameras are compact for full-frame. There is a huge supply of very inexpensive lenses available from them, including Russian stuff, which take photographs with a particular appeal. There are 3-element and 4-element Cooke type lenses which produce excellent colours, probably because the light does not have much glass to go through.

  • @DolisterCovers

    I'd probably never get one but this was super informative just on how it all works. I never understood why all other camera brands don't just massively drop in value off of it being brand new like that.

    Go for a Leica. It opens a whole new universe of pictures. Everything is fine and feels perfect on a Leica. You will love the haptics and the craftman ship. The lenses render beautiful. But the most important thing on a Leica is the user interface. If your skills are over using the fully automatic mode, you will find nothing that beats a Leica in easy to use, simplicity and precision. That's the real effort a Leica gives to you.
    All others only offers you features.
    That's fine. I like my A7RM3. She's a highly costumizable workhorse. But strolling around with a camera and find pictures instead of creating them is a Leica job. In the moment you feel a situation evolving, you can prepare your Leica without losing eye contact to your object of interrest.
    It's a bit like Kyūdō (jap. 弓道). You're present in the situation, you don't think, just feel, you're calm, breathe in deeply, your hand knows what to do, in the one moment you and the universe holds breath you release the shutter. Then you breathe out. The world starts spinning again. You're in peace.
    That's what i like on my Leica Q (Type 116).

    In the last year I have bought two "ugly Leica's" and paid $500 each for them. I got an Leica X-vario for $520 and a D Lux Typ 109 for $480 the D Lux has a hair caught in the front of the lens that doesn't affect anything at all except that you know it's there when you look at it and the X-Vario has a ding on the front of the lens that is purely cosmetic. Yeah they are older models but he D Lux is selling used for $700-900 and the X Vario for $900-$1800. I got them both for $1000. They may be hard to sell off but for banging around NYC they are the Bomb!! Small. black and stealthy!!

    Digital cameras (most of them) are losing their value at the speed of light. Older photographers know, that some of Contax cameras (I think about medium format, not compacts with shitty electronics), Hassy V-series, rare ALPA 35mm cameras, Nikon rangefinders are good investments... these are just few examples of cameras that if you buy them (probably used), you can resell them without losing much money. And there's a good chance to sell them at higher prices in few years. Totally different story with digital cameras. Leicas are exception, but to shoot digital Leica... is like driving electric Rolls Royce. :D

      Stefan Weiberg exactly what I did, never bought a new Leica, but bought a M240 second hand for around a third of the new cost. I bought my first new Leica which was a film MP, I have a feeling that they are going to discontinue them as they are now so rare. If you get a new Leica film camera and they discontinue them, the price will jump a lot. If you want a Leica get the MP which will always be the best film Leica, if you buy a digital there will always be a new better model in a couple of years.

    The problem is sometimes it can be hard to trust eBay seller, not like Apple who officially sells refurbished products at a lower price, and their refurbished products have 1. the same warranty as new products and 2. you can buy AppleCare. In the case of Leica, if it's not Leica certified used/mint ones, and without warranty, people are not confident buying them even at a lower price compared to brand new, since the price is still not cheap.

    A Leica Q-P is hard to find in used market, or it's really expensive. It used to be sold for $3895 at B&H with $600 discount when Q2 was launched, now a Leica Camera Store in FL selling a like new condition used Q-P for $3995! I recently picked up a like new used Q from B&H instead, which cost more than $1000 less than a Q-P.

    Complicated? No kidding. I have been lusting over a Q for years and now a Q2. The issue I have is that I use a Sony A7RIII and as a backup have a Fuji X-T3. Those are killer cameras with awesome auto-focus software, great low light performance, dual card slots, in body stabilization. But on the other hand, its like Man Jewelry and it feels so nice in the hands. I am off on a 25,000 km motorcycle ride and am on the fence whether to leave the Fuji behind and buy a Q2. But I'm curious why do people buy Leica? For the better images or the feel of a heavy brick well made piece of beautiful machinery? So complicated.

    If you have a regular job you can save money overtime to buy it if you reaaaaaly, really want it. We are not talking about Ferraris after all. The thing not many can do is to avoid to feel guilty for having thrown away 5k for a camera that does nothing more than any other camera that cost at least half the price.
    You put yourself in a good position though. You bought a model which is already hugely depreciated and most probably it won't depreciate much more for a long time. So if you get tired of the camera you can always resell it and take back a big part of the money (if not all of them). Smart move

    @3:10 I thought I heard him say Sinn U1 automatic divers watch. It’s a class act, right up there with Rolex Sub, Blancpain 50 fathoms, or Panerai. Like Leica, those luxury brands made their name and reputation as genuine world class innovative tools. Many luxury items don’t always have that distinction, and earn their reputation only because of some charming story or myth behind nothing more than an ordinary middling product.

  • @seanpgrimm
    @seanpgrimm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I always love your content man, but I gotta say, this one is a stretch and can also be dangerous. This is a classic example of false frugality. You’re not really saving money, you’re just spending less than you would have if you bought it brand new. Saving money would be not buying the camera and putting it into some sort of saving/investment vehicle.
    It’s more or less the same thing that happens to all of us at the grocery store. We weren’t planning on buying bagels, but we see they are BOGO so we figure hey, why not, pick them up and tell ourselves that we got a good deal and saved money when in reality, we still spent more money than had we not bought the bagels.
    Same thing here, just with a bigger ticket item. People run themselves into thousands of dollars of debt by “saving” money and buying things on sale.
    Now, that’s not to say that I’m insinuating your purchase was irrational or anything like that. Because at the end of the day, it’s your money, you’re a photographer, and your channel will probably help pay for a good chunk of, if not all of the outlay required for this camera.
    I would just use caution in providing this sort of advice to people. You have a powerful platform and this influences a lot of folks decisions, obviously as evidenced by how heavy advertising drives TH-cam.
    Sorry for rambling, I’m an accountant by trade and personal finance is something I’m passionate about, mostly because I’ve made a lot of costly mistakes myself over my lifetime that I’m still paying for today and I want to help others avoid similar pitfalls.
    Hope you don’t take this personally.
    Keep up the awesome channel!

      I own both those cameras and actually like the X-H1 more, like, a LOT more, surprisingly. Don't be so quick to count it out, it's an incredible camera. Can't wait for the X-H2/X-H1s

      Austin Schargorodski I bought an XH1 and it was great. Two weeks later the XT3 came out. Way better specs so I instantly exchanged it. The part that would have mad me super mad is if I would have kept the XH1 that I paid full price for and THEN they dropped the price almost a grand. That’s my biggest beef with the camera.

    Actually the Q2 isn't "better" - it just has more megapickles...if you need that. The weather sealing rating on the Q2 isn't something I would rely on in seriously inclement weather, and even the Q will stand up fine in a light shower, from my experience. Though not as well as my Sinn U1. ;)

    What's so special about a Leica that the competition cannot match? Even if it were better, is it worth that much of a price difference? Or is it the status symbol that the wannabees want to achieve?

      Pick one up (Q) . Take 3 photos. Draw conclusion. Inevitably buy one. Brilliant and lovely to use camera.

    • @msbrownbeast
      @msbrownbeast 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know. But just that $2000 that you saved could have easily bought you a whole brand new mirror-less Sony Alpha camera, which would likely take better pictures. Digital cameras are not like the mechanical camera back in the day. It's like comparing a quartz watch to a mechanical watch. A quartz watch loses value over time, big time, whereas a mechanical watch would hold up much better, and in some cases actually appreciate. So while I would have no reservation into acquiring a vintage (or even just any mechanical Leica M), I would be very hesitant in spending big bucks in a digital Leica.

    Leica are on a Downhill slope.Cheaper products bashed out by Panasonic .trying to get more exposure to the publics "Wish list " . Very few of their cameras hold their value .You have to either by something very special and sit on it hoping .Or only buy the best S/H lenses .The Leica digital low end cameras are pure shit .

    This video could have been 2 minutes long. The truth is, by the way, you have no idea about what happened with your camera and why the first owner decided to sell. Good job stereotyping tho 👍
