Tell Me Lies follows a tumultuous but intoxicating relationship as it unfolds over the course of 8 years. I just started thinking about this show again and thinking about how it has all of the annoying tropes of a soapy teen drama, but it also absolutely brilliant. I looked up to see reviews of the show and sure enough, no one is seeing this show for what it really is. It is a valuable lesson how narcissistic abuse impacts various people, situations and relationships. This show should be teaching people what manipulation, gas lighting, parental narcissism and symptoms of abuse actually look like, but these lessons are lost on people. None of the reviews I read recognized any of this. Stephen is both a perpetrator and a victim of narcissism. His mother, played by the genius Kathy Segal is a narcissist. Her children respond differently to her abuse. Stephen KNOWS how she works, is victimized by her sabotage, tries to confronts her, protects his sister, and then goes back to college to use all the same abusive head games on Lucy and their friend group. Each character is impacted by his abuse differently which is explored very well. Just look at how Stephen's friends start to wake up to his BS. Lucy is a classic victim and is constantly confused about her feelings because she knows in her gut that he is bad news, but keeps getting caught in his web. She gaslights herself and is desperately trying to cope. This is not love folks, it is abuse. She is not in love. Reviews call this a sexy toxic love story. Stop. This show is way more than that is does an excellent job exposing how this personality disorder wrecks havoc on people's lives and futures.

I think that’s why it was so good. I didn’t know how to explain it to other people but it’s not your average toxic relationship trope it has the necessary depth and follow through
I liked this show, it depicted a toxic relationship without romanticising it. I also liked how Lucy and Stephen didn't end up together, and that they were better off apart.
That would've been a better depiction of Chuck and Blair.
Season two just announced....so hold that thought!

Surviving Stephen. What a piece of work. Liar. Cheater. Every girl though he was some prize but he was just incredibly toxic.
She's toxic in her own right as well. Just look at how she treats her friends and her ex. Both are manipulative 💯💯💯
@louisloother301 But I saw that as Stephen’s character rubbing off onto Lucy as she learns his “survival skills” as a narcissist. Not saying she was a perfect or nice character at the start but you can see her character slowly change and become unlikeable as the season progresses
Lucy was really self centered. Not a super likeable character but necessary for the plot
There was a lot of good in this show. The best being the writing and level of depth everyone got not just the main couple. I did think the car crash muddied things a bit.
I really like the background music, totally fits the show.

Honestly I like Lucy, but it’s her fault her friends kept trying to tell her Stephen is not a good guy, but she wouldn’t listen she was just to love. She even canceled her trip India for him. He didn’t even treat her good, but Lucy was still in love with him and wouldn’t leave him so it’s her fault.
1:18 anyonw notice how he emphasizes him not wearing a ring even though he his engaged. Its as if to show to Lucy that his is still available regardless.
I think it was also maybe to throw us off, like “oh good he’s not married” and then throw the fiancée thing out there.
Yeah, that was smooth. Stephen’s the kind of guy that will never be faithful and always looking for the next conquest. I believe he was quite close to falling for Lucy, but the games and cheating were more addicting.
This show is growing on me as I go.

This was exactly my relationship with my ex. So addictive. So passionate but toxic. Almost impossible to leave but did finally. I felt her pain at the end when he walked out with his ex. Its like Lucy was his side thing all along. Excited that theres a season 2. Weird that in the last scene, his ex wasnt the original actor?
No he didn’t end up with his ex, that was her friend Lydia from earlier in the show, the one from back home. I’m thinking the next season will explore how that unfolded
