- "She was a strong lady, and whatever happened in the bus she explained word-by-word. Because of her dying declaration, we got the case convicted.”
In December 2012, Rajender Singh was in-charge of a special task force in Delhi, when he was called by the then-DCP Chhaya Sharma to immediately rush to Munirka in south Delhi. A 23-year-old woman had been brutally gangraped and Singh was asked to report to the hospital where she was and immediately start the investigation.
It was a crime which shook the nation.
Five years later, two key investigators out of the 41-member team of Delhi Police officers speak to The Quint about how they cracked the Nirbhaya case, the intense pressure to solve the crime and their feelings about the SC verdict upholding the death sentence of four convicts in the case.

Nirbhaya's mother should be given an award... She fought for long for justice... This is how a mother is supposed to be... I cannot imagine but the girl was brave as her mother. Going to court is difficult then killing someone.

The youngest convict is already out of jail. He was a minor apparently when it happened, and minors can't be send to regular jail. He was also the most brutal, the most heartless of them all. Now he's roaming free without a worry in the world.

Our judicial system seem broken.
It took 7 years and 3 months for those rapists to be hanged.
Such heinous crime and the juvenile is free. Bt at least those rapists were hanged today and it surely gives satisfaction to our hearts.

Yes 7 years was long but those monsters went through hell (mental torture ) every single day of the 7 years knowing they have no freedom and only waiting for that day to be hanged.I don’t think they were able to sleep comfortably even a single night knowing what’s coming.A perfect punishment for them.7 years locked up then hang time.

The story was completely truly shown. I didn't find anyone overdramatic or overacting. Specially, the Brave Fearless Warrior (Nirbhaya di), the Survivor (her friend), the doctors & the police and her parents & their saviors (2 truly modern actual mature youth of the country). The story was so amazingly shown ; from their pain & pleads to all to spare them & help them to the 2 mature youths helping them after a lot of people denying them to help. The horror expressions & fear but pride filled eyes of doctors to the angered, sleepless eyes of police. The useless banter of media & politicians putting blame on the system & the police. The people doing some rebellious & revolutionary acts which was needed when both victims needed help. I mean, come on,people! "We make the System" If we don't help them, how will the system & crimes be corrected? The Police & Doctors were doing marvelous job. But the media & common people first didn't react so much. As if, it was any normal eve-teasing case (which is also not at all cool!)! They reacted after knowing their condition! Then, the blame game started. The actual work was done by the Police & doctors only. But yeah, it's also true that if those Police constables had caught the thugs of theft at first, this horror episode wouldn't have have happened. But if the people not had denied help, maybe our warrior would have survived.
And you, the reporter, you don't have any sense or correct choice of words! But yeah, she was indeed right that di's death which was like some animal's bali (sacrifice) which many people forgotten. Sad! 😭 We and our mentality! Danga (Riots) by Hindus and Jihad by Muslims... But no one slaughters the real evil or beast.

People blaming the courts don't understand how the system works. The courts can't change laws. They can only pass judgments based on current laws. If the law doesn't allow the courts to hang juvenile, they just can't do anything about it. If you want to blame someone, blame the politician and the legislature who make laws like this.

According to Indian law juveniles have given maximum punishment of 3 years whether they rape or murder or however ghastly incident. So sad that many many rapists and murderers are escaped through Indian law.

After this incident I decided that my daughter and son have to learn self defence. Infact self decipline, values, self defence should be part of school curriculum. Anyways I don't hope much of it happening in our country, this can happen only in abroad where I'm migrating. But 1 thing I know for sure, even after 20 years in India, the same thing will go on and that time again there will be protests, discussion, debates....etc

It's very sad that only hilighted cases are solved and some time accused are punished quickly.
In fact after this case things got worse.
Since the punishment was increased nothing else was implemented.
There are rape cases where the victim are killed to avoid any statements.
2 or 3 weeks after this case there was an even worse case nobody remembers

What happened to the convicts? My understanding is that they appealed again and that case isn’t closed yet. Please correct me if I’m wrong. I couldn’t find a solid article about this.
Shanti M The four of the six had been given death sentence and their plea for lesser punishment has been denied by SC.one guy ram Singh committed suicide and Mhd afoz was first sent to rehabilitation and later made to settled in South india because he was juvenile.We can hope the last guy might have transformed and don't cause any more trouble.
