Yeah, that's the thing you don't really get from the music alone - the entire scene uses the music _as dialogue_, the two characters are mending their friendship on stage and you can tell what they're telling each other because they're referencing all the old pieces they used to play in the past (hence the strange trio of My Favourite Things, Some Day My Prince Will Come and Moanin' ).

The medley from Kids on the Slope is certainly a bizarre combination of tunes BUT it all makes sense in the context of the series because each of those pieces are all significant to the characters and the story in different ways so the medley is brilliant.

    • @peterlemieux7614
      @peterlemieux7614 ปีที่แล้ว

I had the same reaction. Had he watched the show first, he would have understood why those pieces are included in the medley.
Similarly "baccano" means a din or racket which often appears in the orchestration he chose.
For an amazing big-band styled soundtrack, I recommend Honma Yusuke's score for the 2007 anime Oh! Edo Rocket.

    0:00 Intro
    0:19 Lupin III - "'02 Theme"
2:41 Kids on the Slope - "Kaoru & Sentaro Duo in Bunkasai"
    5:34 Baccano! - Theme
8:20 Gundam Thunderbolt - "Groovy Duel"
13:01 Kekkai Sensen - "Minor Doll"
    16:00 Outro
Considering Lupin III is a sendup/tribute/parody of spy/crime films, it makes sense that it sounds 70s.
I do enjoy Kids on the Slope's music, seeing as Yoko Kanno is almost always fantastic. If you want to hear her atmospheric/ambient/EDM pop music, Macross Plus is fantastic ("Voices" is the only "traditional" song in that soundtrack; it contrasts for plot reasons)
Baccano! is set in Prohibition-era alternate United States with magic/supernatural powers.
I'm only mildly disappointed Blue Submarine No. 6 didn't make it in this video :/ Maybe next time.

It's a terrible anime with paper-thin characters and a contrived idiot ball plot that actually tries to make you sympathize with sexual assault at some point. The drama is only possible because everyone involved is acting like a complete moron. If they were written like normal people, seventeen-year-old or not, this would happen for 90% of the "plot":
A: I have this problem with the implications of what you said and/or did.
B: Oh, no. That's not what I meant, at all. Sorry though.
      A: Oh, okay.

Charles on Kids on the Slope medley: "What a bizarre combination of tunes to combine like this"
They were three of the more prominent tunes covered earlier in the show. IIRC this medley was played at the last episode's climax, where the pianist and drummer characters were just jamming and improvising on the tunes they most liked playing. Or something like that.
So it was more of a "best of" medley, I guess.

Beastars also has an interesting use of jazz, some of the main characters get their own musical styles or themes associated with them, and though they're often presented differently in different points of the story, but they mostly lay on cocktail piano with some classical influences (Juno in particular) and some noir influences too (Louis's theme in particular is just like Cm9 while some guy plays around with the melodic minor on saxophone)

I got this in my recs and as a guy who lives in Japan and digs a bit the scene here, I believe you have a nice starting point if you want to listen to more japanese jazz:
The pianist on the Gundam soundtrack is Ai Kuwabara who has done amazing stuff by herself, her album "To The End Of This World" is one of my favorites ever.
She also has done a duo album with... Shun Ishiwaka, the drummer of the Kids on the Slope soundtrack. He is one the of rising stars of the scene here, and is hyper prolific! He's produced and written a lot of stuff, even less jazz stuff like his Songbook Project. But you should check out his "Answer To Remember" album on which Takuya Kuroda appears. :)
Also he's the member of a band called CRCK/LCKS whose co-leader is Tomomi Oda, herself a very frequent collaborator of Naruyoshi Kikuchi... the guy behind the Gundam Soundtracks.:wink:
I would also highly recommend MELRAW, a guy who also has Shun Ishiwaka playing on his records and does super cool fusion stuff.

@@sirrudolph I can't say from an educated standpoint if it's jazz or not but it's really JAZZY and super ENJOYABLE. :-) I'm hoping this comment gets more notice, not because I'm a comment whore but because video games have just as many great soundtracks as anime, and most of them are larger works or bodies of comprehensive work, usually by multiple composers and music directors per title/release. I have to go find the info I saw somewhere on how much project resources were going into on soundtracks, particularly in the Assassin's Creed franchise at the time. I listened to the AC4/Black Flag (pirates!) soundtrack SO many times...it's amazing and there are literally hundreds more many of which I find equally engaging, just to listen to and on a complex level of elegant execution and integration.

Give the Japanese jazz fusion band Soil & Pimp Sessions a listen to. They're absolutely bonkers, off-the-wall in every way, and their music is just so colourful and energetic. They've also done a few anime soundtracks. I saw these guys live in Japan, at a really realllllly rural art and music festival, half way up a mountain covered in bamboo (the whole experience was just a feast for the soul), and they played to this relatively small audience just like they would have done at a major gig. Absolute bangers!

I will add this but during the weird years of middle school it was actually Kid's on the slope that inspired me to work my but off to get onto the the competition jazz group that my school had and so this is a real nostalgia trip hearing that and remembering how it shifted a semi-bored band kid to someone who ended up sticking with music and even production (theater) in a way I never expected.

You gotta watch kids on the slope. It's about this classical pianist who discovers jazz with his delinquent jazz drummer friend. They play in the basement of a record store and every song, artist and reference used in the show is from real life; all set in the summer of 1966. The performances are animated perfectly and it all culminates into this beautiful thing. Really worth the watch.
