I love this song so much, I feel like while I love What The World Needs, Play To Win tells us a lot about Ocean as a character, her backstory and her home life and why she is the way she is. Kind of wish they'd kept it.
I feel like they had to make this change tbh. I love this song but realistically speaking I don't think it would go over well in the stateside tour as is. It's a little shocking to even look back on tbh.

In my opinion (and keep in mind I've unfortunately never seen this run personally). The song is just about Ocean's desire to win at life and her family circumstances about why that is. But that's just my personal view.
To my knowledge Ocean was on the school debate club, she listened to her father's advice which was to be truthful but she was on a losing streak. So she called her mom and her mom told her to.. play the game, even if it isn't morally right. When she started doing what her mom said she started winning. However at the national debate a disabled kid shows up and she can't use her strategy to win. And so she loses. (Also I'm p sure the disabled kid wasn't even disabled and he was playing the game the same way Ocean did) so she got her comupence. And then she has a moral dilemma about, is it better to win or to do what's right in the end. That's the story!
It was already explained but I’m gonna comment the way I interpreted it regardless :3 her parents, namely her mother, have love for her that is conditional upon her success in school and the debate team. Being the overachiever that she is, she doesn’t want to bear the disappointment of her parents and so she listens to her mother’s cruel advice about how to manipulate an audience’s collective psyche in order to appeal to them and win an argument. She does this (with Constance on the debate team as well, who doesn’t agree with Ocean’s tactics) and then over time she loses sight of how toxic she’s really being, until a cripple shows up - presumably a normal kid doing the same thing she is, to a much greater extent - and cue Ocean consequently having a crisis about her own moral compass, the means of which inspired by Richmond’s fondness for German nihilist philosophers. I can glean that Ocean’s parents are divorced, causing her abandonment issues, which her parents seem to be taking advantage of throughout their portrayal in the song. I think it’s very clever how they show Ocean’s poor decision making and judgment of conséquences on account of her being a teenager and having an undeveloped brain, her neuroticism, and her parents being separated, and then her subconscious guilt boiling up over time as a result of it.
@@Emaree02 I feel like that interpretation works if Ocean's original backstory was being the child of divorce where one parent was a hippie and one parent was the go-getter Ocean wanted to be in order to get out of Uranium. It'd be an interesting storyline for the character for sure!
He stuck around 2008-2013, he didn't return in the 2014 workshops (since he's Canadian & they couldn't afford to fly him to America), & he stuck in 2015-2019 because most audiences thought Noel's Lament didn't work without Kholby
