Easy trick for distressing type in Affinity Photo

  • 90% of what I make as a graphic designer and artist stems from experimentation and play. The more I try to break Affinity Photo, the better the results, and this one today is one of the easiest to accomplish, and I didn't break anything.

    Amazing! This might eliminate the need for so many fonts! Thanks!!!

      I am especially fond of eliminating "distressed" fonts and making my own type treatments instead. So much more satisfying.

    I just downloaded the latest version of Designer and Publisher. I would like to see how you do this in Designer.

      I cannot do this exact process in designer, but I can’t do some interesting things with tape in that app.

    I'm just trying to recreate this in Affinity Photo 1.9.3 and I experience some strange behaviour: I've set it all exactly like you have but when I crank up the Gaussian Blur it blurs ONLY inside the type (like protecting the transparent area outside the type and making the typed word more or less transparent at the edges but only within its boundaries which remain sharp - not at all like at about 2:40 in your video where the blurring sort of spills outside of the type and softens the contour as such). Any idea what might produce this unwanted effect? Any checkbox I might have missed?
    If I have the type rasterized on some solid background it works OK - but you obviously lose the option to e.g. change the font or its settings later. No more non-destructive work once it's raserized...

      I don’t know if this would be part of the problem, but Do you have the “preserve alpha” option checked within the brush settings? Click on brush tool, then look at preserve alpha on the far right of the tool adjustments. This may or may not be part of the issue, but I always leave it unchecked.
      The only other thing that I can think of that would cause this would be that your type is selected (dancing ants around it) and it’s creating a barrier for your type to not push out further.
      Anything beyond that, I would have to see what you’re looking at, specifically what’s happening on the screen close up, and what your layers pallet looks like.

      @@DaveConrey Hi Dave, thanks for getting back to me so quickly! After I ruled out the things you mentioned were responsible I noticed that there are actually 2 positions possible when you drag those live filter layers below the type layer: one that's inset just a little bit from the left and one that's inset a bit more (which I think signifies it's a mask layer?). When the live filter layers are in that farthest position to the right under the type layer it all works just as it does in your video. However, when those layers are clipped to the type layer in that position only just a little bit inset from the left you get the problems I described. So I guess it all has to do with that difference between clipping and masking layers...
      That having been said, it could, however be worthwhile to experiment with that "wrong" position of the live filter layers as well, as you actually do get some roughening effect nevertheless which is noticeable different but could possibly be useful anyway.

    Is there a way to turn this font or any into just and outline? Basically hollow letters. Thank you

    • @DaveConrey
      @DaveConrey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, give the text a stroke color, make the fill color empty, and then from the Text Panel (Command+T / CNTRL+T) adjust the stroke under the "decorations" section of the panel. Also, make sure your text layer is selected when you do all of this. I've made the mistake of clicking off the layer and got frustrated wondering why the changes were being applied.

    Very interesting! Makes me aware of all those things I probably haven't yet explored sufficiently in AP... Wish, though, there was a way to vectorize the version of such a "logo" I'd consider final in the end. The Affinity apps desperately need some decent Image Trace tool to really finish off a workflow like this.

    • @DaveConrey
      @DaveConrey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hopefully they will add a live trace option to affinity Designer in the next major update probably whenever they roll out version 2.0

    • @moreorlesslikeso
      @moreorlesslikeso 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaveConrey Yeah, I hope so, too. Back in the day I've often done some grungy roughening to text and logos in Photoshop then finally upped the resolution of the result (in a flat file) to carefully soften some of the very small detail before vectorizing in Illustrator to get a resolution independent version of the design.
      As the first steps can obviously (and so convincingly) be done in Affinity Photo it would be great to finally be able to do it all within the Affinity apps.
      Apart from that your video has been very helpful as I've previously have found myself resorting to Inkscape to do some roughening to Affinity Designer generated vector work... Although I wasn't really convinced by the tools for roughening in Inkscape (which actually tend to produce pixel art from vector stuff) you can, however, do the final step of live tracing back to vector there. Anyway, I'm warming up more and more to the "Affinity trinity" of apps and hope some of the gaps (functionwise or toolwise) will be filled by upcoming versions. Keep up the good work!

    Excellent video, I must admit I have always struggled with the displace - good to see it actually displaces well

    • @DaveConrey
      @DaveConrey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad it helped. I struggle with it sometimes too. Honestly, the best advice I can give on displace textures is high contrast images with larger areas of black vs. white. The more grit you have in an image will make more noise. If you want less noise, take your displacement image and maybe throw a threshold filter on it, or at least bump up the curves significantly.

    • @Graphicxtras1
      @Graphicxtras1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaveConrey thanks for the advice, yes, clearly it needs more experimentation - certain I will get to grips with it but it has proved to be a slightly frustrating filter - will add more grit !! even if it is taking a photo of my outdoor pavement
