    Floki is going through a million things in his head right now. this was supposed to be the land of the gods. and to find this.. this throws his whole universe into chaos. He was deeply devout to the gods, he MURDERED a defenseless kneeling man for them.. and if they dont exist... but Aethelstan's god does? Now he also fears his soul is in peril.. and also wonders if he even HAS a soul..

  • @KC-yd5kj
    @KC-yd5kj 4 ปีที่แล้ว +294

    Irish monks found Iceland before the Vikings. That particular group of monks drew their lineage from Colmcille or St Columba. They used to jump in tiny reed boats and let God take them wherever he willed. There's good evidence that suggests Saint Brenda made it the whole way to North America about a thousand years before Christopher Columbus. Their abbey's still exist in Northern Ireland and one if their manuscripts called the Book of Kells is on display in Dublin it's thought to be the oldest surviving book in the world.

    I'm not gonna lie, this scene put a big 'ol smile on my face. I never forgave floki for him murdering Athelstan. This was sweet sweet karma. floki murdered Athelstan outta pure jealousy & his actions devastated Ragnar, he discovers what he believes to be the land of his Gods only to find a Cross there & it drives him utterly insane.

    • @jimmypints
      @jimmypints 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Totally agree. The way the show lays out the Norse gods and Christianity both being real gives credence to all characters that have a faith crisis. This scene is such good comeuppance for Floki for all the terrible things he did in the name of his gods. The settlement utterly failing, the infection nearly killing him, everyone he ever loved dying or leaving him, and finally revealing that his “land of the gods” had been touched by the Christian God long ago was like watching him pass through hell. Imo he got off easy being able to settle down in America and (likely) pass peacefully.

      @@jimmypints even to this day you have people in the comments playing team religion, but they totally miss what the show conveys. The conversation between Ecbert and Ragnar highlights it, that all peoples have a god, rather if it's real or not isn't the issue, without it people have no purpose. Rather you pray to a single God with a court of angels or many gods with a king (Allfather, Zeus, Ra.) All peoples pray to a higher power and believe in an afterlife that would sound silly to someone of another faith. Whose to say ones correct over the other? Maybe we all have a part of it right, but missing another part if it. Even nowadays we're learning how many religions borrow details from others, the 3 abrahamic religions are all very similar yet so different. Whose to say a peoples with no written language didn't interpreted the almighty as the allfather?

    Floki already started to feel a change of heart and a bit of chaos in terms of his faith and belief when he heard the Muslim call of prayer and when he saw the Muslims praying in the Mosque of Al Andalus, than he somehow became a devoted man after finding the island and he had visions of gods and thought he found the land of the gods and to find the cross was the least he expected and that has broken him and he just screamed because his dreams were destroyed and his feelings and belief were in total chaos

      "I wish to give thanks, speaking such words as I may, to the almighty Ruler, the King crowned with glory, the eternal Lord, for these riches I look on here by the barrow, that I have been blessed to acquire for my dear people, before the time of my passing."

    At the end of series, Floki was hinted become a Christian himself and left his old ways. Despites his brutal past for killing many Christians. The god still guided him to Christian faith and saved Floki from his wrath from volcano eruptions just to show that he is the god, he has power and he choose mercy over punishment as Christian is all about peace. From this moment, Floki started to change and abandoned his old gods. The god mercy had melted a heart of steel of a ruthless viking. Floki is more like darkness turned light, in search of Odin but found Jesus while Aethelstan is a Christian who disobeyed the god by committed an adultery.

    Very interesting that this is episode 5"19, in the Bible the verse goes as follows...
    John 5:19 says, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise". This verse is part of a passage in which Jesus defends his ministry after the Pharisees challenge him for violating their Sabbath traditions and claiming equality with God.
    This is similar to and a parallel you to Floki's situation questioning his own beliefs and traditions.
    I wonder if the writers intended this?
