Cutting bouquets from my Limelight and Little Lime plants for my living room. My Bobos are doing really well as well, very fluffy indeed. I plan to take the plunge and attempt to grow some into trees.
Thanks for this video Tracey. I guess you noticed that regarding your last video, commenters were asking if your standards were grafted and now you have clarified they are not! Love the recap of all the ones you have! I was interested that you said you had not been watering the Hydrangeas. Mine now get watered ever other day with drip irrigation and it has really helped in this extended hot weather in southern Ontario. I'm looking forward to your next video.
Hi Susan, With so much in the news regarding drought...our children were getting me to "conserve" water. I usually water the garden every 2-3 days during the heat...but decided to water every 5 days...and I''m actually shocked to see only a few burned panicles on my hydrangeas. Perhaps, I have them planted so thick transpiration is less profound? The containers (not self watering) get watered every 3 days and they still seem to do okay...they do get a little droopy on the 3rd day but perk right back up as soon as I given them a little drink. The trick must be a mixture of compost I added to them.
@@TracysHomeGarden I am told drip irrigation saves water as you are not spraying around, are getting right to the root ball and are not getting leaves wet. I really don’t know if one uses less water or not with the drip method. Containers - I see that you overwinter some Hydrangeas in containers. How do avoid them dying in the cold winters?

Glad you asked this question about her potted plants as I'm curious myself how well the hydrangea's hold over winter and how she protects them. They are more protected in the ground obviously so this has been a question on my mind for a while as I'm desiding if I want some of mine in pots or not.

On Friday we have the start of a hose pipe ban and I’m almost terrified of how my hydrangeas will look in a few weeks. We just have hot sun for next two weeks. How long do you think hydrangeas can go without water.
I hope the plants will be "ok"...here in Toronto we are lucky to have so much water...but hearing how people are affected by drought in other parts of the work makes me want to try to conserve water. To water the plants in containers, I have been saving water after washing produce and only use garden hose for the plants in the garden. I'm now watering the garden every 5 days...fingers crossed I get a few burnt panicles but the rest seem to be "ok".

THank you Azizeh, I only give hydrangeas compost and/or used coffee/tea grounds...no fertilizers. To get large blooms, you should prune the stems by 1/3...the stems will fewer but larger panicles. Plant in containers don't tend to do well in long terms...so to get them healthy you should plant it in the ground in an area that gets 6+ hours of sun. In zone 3, panicle hydrangeas need a lot of sun to form blooms and develop that beautiful fall red colour. All the best!

Hi Malthy, A few yellow leaves you get around the time when the hydrangeas bloom is okay. This happens to all of us. As hydrangea plants bloom, some leaves get sacrificed. If you get many yellow leaves and the plants look unhealthy then I would worry then.
Thank you Pratibha! What zone are you in? In our zone 5, Bobos do best in areas with 6 hours of sun. Are the two Bobos in a partial shade area? I have a few Bobos in the back garden that don't get enough sun are just starting bloom now....almost 1 month or so behind the Bobos in full sun. If this is not the case then it may be they were overfed in spring? Hydrangeas don't like too much fertilizers...so when in doubt, "less is more".
Hi Tracy! Question for you or the group. My newer standards are dropping a lot after the last hard rain. Should I try to tie it up or cut off the blooms? I would hate to have them stems harden downward.
Hi Catherine, I would cut away the blooms...but do leave at least 4-5 nodes so you have room to prune (next spring). This will also help to keep the branches upright as they harden up for winter in an upright position. Hope that makes sense...sort of like how I cut way the floppy panicles on my Vanilla Strawberry canopy.

Hi Krista, Yes...garage (unheated) with temps around what you have would be okay for them. Just to make sure to let them go dormant outside for a 1-2 (after the 1st frost date) before taking them inside your garage. All the best.

Hi Maria, No don't bring them inside...I would plant it in the ground...if not possible, then you can keep the plant in pot in an unheated garage or a cold room in the basement. Hydrangeas do need a period of "cool" winter to bloom well next spring. Indoors temps may be too warm for them.
Hi, Tracy one of your videos you said the only fertilizer you use is coffee grounds I did that this year, my blooms are very small this year any suggestions? Thanks could it be the heat?
Hi Juanita, Small blooms could mean: you didn't prune the plant back this past spring so the blooms are smaller (but more of them)? To get larger blooms, it's best to prune the branches by about 1/3 (and not more because the blooms may be too large and flop). Hope that helps.
Tracy, got a quick question for you. I know you are in alot colder climate than me but have you ever had a standard hydrangea reset from the ground? I know sometimes they do that when they experience colder temps than they are used to.. I am in zone 7B and was thinking about training an endless summer hydrangea into a tree form. The other day I noticed a couple of my mine are starting to grow from the bottom instead of the top(these are not standards) . Would I be wasting my time trying this on a endless summer?? I would hate to get it looking good after 4 yrs of training it for it to reset at the bottom. Thanks in advance!
Hi Randy, Endless Summer hydrangeas are Macrophylla types and their stems are not woody like those of panicle hydrangeas. Macrophylla hydrangea trees are all grafted.
I have a few different hydrangeas that I’m wanting to turn into standard form, but there are a few things I’m unsure of. When you create a tree, does the stem of the tree under the first set of branches ever get taller, or is that how tall the trunk will be forever? Also can I trim it into a tree this time of year, or should I wait until spring? Thanks!
No, the trunk do not get taller..that's why you need to always start with the tallest branch possible. The trunk will only get wider..not taller. What will make the tree taller is the branches that form the canopy. Hope that helps.
My Little Lime now has small blooms because I divided 1 plant into 4 last fall. It will take a year or two to mature and form larger blooms. Bobo has large blooms - possibly it has more mature roots and pruned more? Just a wild guess. 😁
I do have my Endless Summer Bloomstruck and Let's Dance Blue Jangles in full sun. In our zone 5, I get away with them in full sun because I have them planted so close that they do okay...but this takes the plants about 2-3 years to get well rooted in to survive the 6+hr sun.

Yes, I will keep them in their pots for as long as I can manage them their. However, I have family members who have been asking for them already. If I give them away, I will somehow make new trees to put back in the pots…I actually really do love the look of the trees in the pots. 💚 We are in the same boat with regards to garden space goes…I too do not have any more space for plants in ground. 😣

Just beautiful. Seeing your bobo’s something is definitely wrong with mine. It’s their first year so I will be patient and give them a bit more time

Sheridan usually has a sale of Hydrangeas in July...I would look out for their sales and get one of each plant to do so. :-)

I didn’t do anything. Just leave the heads on as it creates winter interest, then cut back late winter/early spring.

Macrophylla does best in part shade ideally morning sun and afternoon shade. Paniculata hydrangeas like full sun
