Hey ya'll. Just a quick note. I've had COVID for a little over a month and really sick. I've been really isolated and it can get lonely. I make sure to watch your videos everyday and it's helped. It's funny how alone this virus makes you feel because it's so contagious but ya'll have been like friends. I'm always one of the people to respond to your videos first because it's just refreshing to see real people have real reactions. So, thanks for helping through these hard days. I'm starting to get better- so, thanks again. I appreciate ya'll.

It wasn't torture from the enemy. The soldier lost his arms, legs, hearing, voice, eyesight from the mine/artillery shell. . He was trapped in his body with no way to communicate other than bobbing his head in Morse code. He was in a hospital where they were trying to help him but really weren't. He was in physical and mental agony and wanted it to end so he was bobbing out the Morse code message KILL ME. The nurse tried to help him but was stopped. The song is all about the horrors of war most of us ignore, are unaware of or overlook.

The song isn’t about war, it’s not anti-war or anything that. It’s set in war time, but the song’s message itself doesn’t pertain to war. It’s about the helpless situation he’s in. James Hetfield said it himself, it’s ultimately about being trapped. If the message of this song was presented as a meal, being trapped in that sort of hellish isolation would be the food, and war would just be the plate it’s being served on.

A lot of people claim that this song is anti-war, and that's understandable, but inaccurate. According to the writer of the song, it's not anti or pro war, it just acknowledges that there is a steep price to pay for war. A subtle difference perhaps, but a difference nonetheless.

He has all these conversations and has all these experiences but with no sensory input he can't tell if they're memories, dreams, or hallucinations.

Them first music video for any single. They've used the clips from "Johnny Got His Gun" to illustrate perfectly what's going on in this song!!!! This one tells the story of a soldier who's got stuck inside his own body: he can't hear, move, speak, he can barely do anything. This was also them second anti-war song after "Disposable Heroes" (1986; "Master Of Puppets" album)

This song represents what humankind has accomplished with wars. Soldier after soldier with deep scars, soul and body.
The scenes you watched are from the movie "Johnny Got His Gun". So the soldier came back home without limbs cause of a mine. Couldn't speak, so basically no form of communication and trapped in his own mind, not knowing if he was awake or dreaming, just a constant torture.

This song describes, both lyrically and musically, the torture and hell our soldiers go through after going to war. Most of them come home a different person than when they left.
Whether it be physical, or mental, damage from the horrors of war. We, each and EVERYone, need to be extensively grateful for all of our military members. Be sure to show respect and gratitude to ALL of our military, soldiers and Coast Guard personnel! If it weren't for them, we would be living under extreme tyranny!

The way to feel the emotion, is to understand that the pain/horror content of each song is taken into context as a 3rd party character. Now,
thinking of it that way will mentally pull you out being terrified..Its not you in the video, now your going to be in the right mindframe, now when you get the emotion of immense sadness and despair at the end of the video, right as reach peak disbelief, then you swing that emotion into how lucky we all are to not have had to go through these people's circumstances, it should remind us all that we have blessings all around us. The Men and Woman who went into the Wars of history,
If you think about it, so many lives lost to fight for us to be here, including the lives of the enemy, should give you a sense of the magnitude of how much heaven and earth it took for us to be so blessed today. Bless you both as well, you two together put on a hell of a show, Peace! LuV!🍦🍦Ice Cream!!

It’s a song based on a book written and later made into a movie, by Dalton Trumbo “Johnny got his gun” a World War 1 novel about a traumatic casualty of a soldier who survived the war but lost his voice, his hearing, his sight, both arms and legs! He simply living on a machine and IV’s. He only has his thoughts with no one to talk to but himself. The song is based on a soldiers perspective, basically it can be about any war. This includes soldiers going through PTSD. When I was in Iraq war for my 4th time, I lost so many friends, I started to question why did I survive 7 combat tours?!? This song and Faded To Black helped me recover some on my PTSD issues then and now! When ever I feel really down and unsure about myself? I listen to both One & Faded to Black to help me some what understand my PTSD moments!! Thanks for your honest opinions not using political rhetoric like other channels but listening with your heart and opened mind!!! I thank you for your service to our Country!!! 🇺🇸

From an old book, Johnny Got His Gun, later turned into the movie used in tge video. Soldier lost his arms, legs, and face. Couldn't hear, speak, or see. Was using Morris code by hitting his head against the pillow. Someone finally recognized what he was saying..."Kill me."

For many of their fans this was like a cheap blow because they said that they had been sold to be commercials, since in those days, it was the first band that made a video clip for a platform like MTV (80's), but that helped catapult Metallica into the giants of the metal industry of those times, putting them in the Top 100 of the greatest MusicVideos of all history worldwide ...Greetings from Chile🔥🔥

I had to come peep out the magnificent couple. I see the dynamic duo is looking at Metallica. Yeeeah...that video freaked me out too. The dude laying there with no arm or legs. It’s like a scene outta hell-raiser. Just imagining being in that condition freaks me out.
Aside from the story and visuals, the song is Awesome! I don’t rock with to much metal but THEM white boys trigger me and make me wanna do push ups or just be plain inspired to move!
Salute to y’all and I pray that many blessings unfold for you all in 2021 and beyond.

To help put this video into context, the footage in it is from the 1971 movie "Johnny Got His Gun" based on the classic novel by the same name... It's an anti-war film that was made and released during the Vietnam War Era and shines a light on the horrors and ignorance of war.

The movie does have a few bright spots. The nurse opens the curtains, so he learns to count the days by the sun's warmth on his skin. He learns to tell when he's awake or asleep by whether he controls the images in his mind's eye or they control him. He learns to tell who is in the room by the number of footsteps and how heavy they are. In the end, though, the military officer draws the curtains after he thwarts the nurse, thereby destroying his most important connection to the outside world.

Metal is often times the vessel for the messages of people about issues/history that society can be too thin to talk about... Or want to think about. Our societies need to remember about our suffered past or we can be susceptible to walk about into the same problems again. Do not let other's suffering be in vein. We need to love each other.

The hospital scenes are from a 1971 movie Johnny Got His Gun (fiction inspired by a gruesome true story about a Canadian soldier from World War I. During battle, a mortar shell hits very close to "Johnny" Joe Bonham, causing severe physical damage.). It's definitely an anti-war song. TOTAL BANGER!!!!!!!!

This was from a book called Johnny Got His Gun by guy named Dalton Trumbo. He was blacklisted in Hollywood in the 40s when Senator Joe McCarthy said that Communists were everywhere. He wrote the screen play for the movie Spartacus. This was Metallica's first video they made.

The message I took from this video is this:
    1) War is an old man's game.
    2) War has horrific consequences.
    3) Authority does not care about wounded soldiers.
    4) This song is why I love Metallica.

The footage is from an old movie called Johnny Got His Gun (1971), about a soldier during World War 1, who got blown up by a mortar shell. He lost his arms, legs, hearing, voice, and everything but his inner, torturous thoughts with no way to communicate or do anything about it. A literal 'basket case' and a living hell. He was asking, through Morse Code, that someone put him out of his misery. Sometimes death is better.
