~Tapping into Your Potential Where Others Saw None~
I was there that night, nearly 40 years ago and I still recall every moment as if was there now. Finest 11 minutes of music I have ever experienced.
Happy for you!
I wasn't even born, but if I had one choice to travel to in time, this is the one. I envy you 🙂
Saw this Tour in 85 in Houston, TX. Best Concert I've EVER seen to date...
You are soooo lucky! Wish I could of been there
Jealous of you! 😊
MARK KNOPFLER.....is all you need to know---King of guitar !!!
Mark Knopfler doesn't just simply play the guitar, he tells stories with it. Terry Williams on the drums was on fire here, one of the most entrancing performance for me
That's Mark Knopfler on lead guitar and Terry Williams on drums absolutely KILLING it.
That's True, and percussion Danny Cummings, (at the Band from Mark Knopfler Tour he is Drums playing! (
Mark Knofler is one of the best guitarists ever.
Facts!
Even though his style of playing is different from most (finger picking), I think in his prime he was the best of them all. Having said that, I probably haven't heard enough of other players to make a proper judgement, but I do love his playing.
He is way next level and on. Wow. Lord the drummer killed it too
I'd put Gary Moore up there too. :) Different style but brilliant.
Plays with no pick! Totally agree!
The lead singer/guitarist is Mark Knopfler. I don’t know if you noticed, but he was finger-picking the whole time. He’s one of the all-time greats!
The rest of the band is not too shabby either! 🔥❤️🔥
Under rated guitar GOD. I came to the comments to make sure someone pointed it out lol.
IMO he is THE top guitarist. Saw them in ‘83. My mouth hung open the whole time watch his fingers blur for 3 hours!
@@LojakZeRo, you can tell he listened to Chet Atkins a time or two. ;)
@@steventweed3599 one of my favorite Mark K. videos is of him playing a medley of songs with Chet! They were great fans of each other and friends!
No pick just fingers. I love it.
The bassist and the drummer are amazing beyond Mark Knopfler. Top level.
Mark is a wonder of the world and drummer
Back up dancer Is the 2nd keyboardist.
They're absolutely brilliant individuals who you could listen to by themselves but together they're out of this world and besides their phenomenal playing you are right, they just love what they do and enjoy the hell out of.
Terry Williams' father was there that night & so he went all out! His father had never been to one of their concerts & seen his son play live so it was very special. I've been fortunate to see them live. They're AMAZING ❤❤❤
The backup guitar player is mark knopler’s brother, so yeah, they played together a lot. He ended up leaving the band to go solo
Best guitarist of all times right there.
In no small way, you are bringing GREAT forgotten songs to those who have never heard them before. I thank you for your efforts and please keep it up!
Congratulations, you have just witnessed one of the most iconic live performances of all time. This is one tight band and there were all at their peak that night.
One of the best songs ever. So fantastic. Mark Knopfler is just brilliant. I loved this the first time I heard it.
Knopfler is incredible. Masterful technique, gorgeous tone. The whole group really knows how to jam. Dire Straits is one of my very favorite bands.
Really? I would have never guessed!! I am right with you!!
I HATED this song when it came out in 78 (I was 12)….I liked pop music & KISS…..Only in my 20’s did I finally grow to love this !…..Now w/TH-cam I discovered this version & it’s seriously an orgasmic vibe……So glad you discovered this version also….great react !
I am right there with you. Same age and poor taste as a pre-teen and early teen. Thankfully, our tastes improved with age. Back then, I would have thought Mark Knopfler was not cute but I have changed on that too. lol.
The drumming in this song is hilariously good. At 4:22 you can see the band laughing at how intense the drum fills are.
Every time I see the drummer in this video, I think of Animal from the Muppets! 😀
Yes Sir. Terry Williams is the greatest drummer of all time in my opinion. Plenty to debate, but for me it doesn't get better than this song. It's next level drums.
@@bju194422 so do I. Animal loved his drums as much as this drummer does for sure.
The story is that terry's dad was in the audience, seeing the band for the first time. Terry was showing off for him
Mark Knopfler is one of my favorite guitarists of all time. He has a distinct sound. Telegraph Road is my favorite from Dire Straits and the Alchemy Live version is terrific. More Mark Knopfler please!
That is one of the most Iconic songs and the guitar work on that is out of this world I saw Dire Straits live in 92 and Mark Knopfler does not use a pick he is one of my all time guitar hero
Interesting story behind this song. The lyrics tell the story but it was true. Them going to seek shelter from the rain and coming across this band called The Sultans of Swing playing like they were at a packed venue but there were only about 6 people in the bar at the time.
Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Sultans Of Swing", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.
Romeo and Juliet is a personal favorite.
Can add " skateaway", expresso love" and "down by the waterline".
That's true, they don't have bad song.
This is the Reference of that band, No Bad Song ...
Mark Knopfler is the ultimate Guitar god!..and the person with the"long guitar" next to him is John Illsley, the bassist of the group and his great friend..an amazing band and an amazing performance!
At these days, in 1983, Dire Straits were: Mark Knopfler (guitar & vocals), John Isley (bass), Hal Lindes (guitar), Alan Clark (keyboards) and Terry Williams (drums), with Tommy Mandel (keyboards and dances).
It´s a great song its on several of my playlists. The drummer is out of this world in this version. Happy Christmas to you and your family.
Watch the entire concert, it will literally BLOW YOUR MIND!
This song ALWAYS makes me smile! Thanks for the Live version which is quite a bit longer than the studio version. Great band and great music!
The lead singer, lead guitarist, songwriter, and leader of the band is Mark Knopfler and you're right, they were the epitome of cool
Yes they did let the volume go down, just sensational. Mark Knopfler was serioiusly incredible on lead guitar!! And the drummer - WOW!!
The best part of this song is that fantastic guitar solo at the end. The radio version of the song cuts out before it even gets warmed up.
One of the best pieces of live music about one of the more average live music experiences of the lead singer/guitarists. Some amazing literary tension there.
I think you’ll find that the backup dancer was actually the keyboardist.
He’s surrounded himself with keyboards so whilst it looks like he’s dancing, he’s actually playing multiple keyboards.
That’s also why later you noticed him playing “one handed“. The left hand was on the other keyboard
Alan was to the left looking at the stage and the percussionist Joop de Korte was to the right jumping around.
This live version is quite different composition compared to the album version, I highly recommend listening to that one as well, that one is soo sharp!
Once you’ve heard this version you can’t go back 😅
Fun FAct. I saw this LIVE in Houston, TX back in 1985. Best concert ever
They say that music can really help the human psyche and this is one of those songs that proves that... you can't NOT move and you can't NOT smile and feel uplifted with music like this! Happy Holidays and Peace to All!
Proper proper musicians who know exactly how to draw the audience in with their fantastic music and performance. Mark is rated as the 27th best guitarist ever and his technique is so unique and brilliant. I have seen them live and the audience was going crazy and they did 4 encores. Mark grafted his ...lls off and he is the lead guitarist who always gives that extra
totally agree with your comment
Pfffft 27th. He’s in my top 2!
Thanks for the reaction bruh, classic stuff. The "volume drops" have almost become a lost art form these days but it's called "dynamics". It takes some mastery cuz all the musicians have to be on the same page to pull it off. Creates mood, crescendo, climax, allows soloists to be heard, etc. Back in the day, we would say " break it down" and the drummer would do a fill or just a rimshot and the band would break the groove down to a whisper. You could feel the audience instinctively get quiet in anticipation. With technology, we've made real strides musically but unfortunately we've lost some human interaction and feeling along the way.
Another favorite band of mine!
Also, Mark Knopfler did one of my favorite movie soundtracks too- "The Princess Bride". It's all instrumental, but that guitar is recognizable anywhere.
Giving the crowd their monies worth and their best !
The drummer is Terry Williams, my claim to fame is we are distantly related (by marriage, my grandmother's family) he also shares my birthday
Always exciting to see a legendary band when they were at the peak of their power.
The drummer is standout keeping the pace of this beat. Dire Straits is a musician's band. Very respected by their peers. Mark was known for never playing a song live the same way twice! ETA Nice to see YOU having fun!
But that I precisely what i DONT want to hear at a concert. I know the album lyrics and rhythms, that's what I am paying for, not a ad lib jam session for 3 hrs maybe with some lyrics I recognize. That's insulting to the fans. Jam after a good live recognizable rendition of the song, you know at the end of the song.
@@AttackChefDennis And have you been disappointed about any of the live recordings you have heard?? No one said they jammed a whole song.
@@joanmayfield4791 my wife's an avid Dire Straits fan she hates this version. crap sound and vocals. If I want jam sessions I'll go to a Phish or Dead Head concert and lose myself in whatever they are playing. But if I'm strange for wanting my live music to resemble my album music then I like being strange
@@AttackChefDennis I like art. This is performance art and seeing it performed adds dimension and broader strokes. Why would I want to hear a recorded version I can play at home?
@@AttackChefDennis so you also dislike Pink Floyd Pulse and David Gilmour for example? He rarely plays the same solo twice. I guess any live music is pretty much OOB!
Was around 20 when this first came out and still rockin to it..can't get enough...lol
Did you know he's left handed and taught himself to play right handed...one of the best ever..
And the drummer can jam..yeah great song..one that will go down in history
What blows me away is that Mark Knoffler plays without a pick - just his fingers - and gets that sharp, clean sound.
Definitely put the studio version on your playlist, what a great tune with a great full sound
One of the things I love about this song is the recognition given to "guitar George, he knows all the chords". That's George Young, oldest brother of Malcolm and Angus from ACDC, also the rhythm guitarist and co song writer with lead guitarist Harry Vander, from 60's Aussie band The Easy beats.
Dire straights definitely needs more of your attention, they're well worth it. 😘👌💖
Never knew this. And is Harry the one mentioned in the song as well?
@@donnakeeton168 Yes that's right , together they wrote a lot of songs for other artists.
Your reactions are the best! Your appreciation for music is uplifting
Thank you Man!
@@LFRFAMILY you're very welcome. If you ever have time, check out my bands video. th-cam.com/video/vRzQTnBhb1Q/w-d-xo.html hope you enjoy if you do. Keep up the good work
Knop has always been a top ten guitarist for me easy; his finger picking is unmatched
Lindsey Buckingham is right there with him, but I agree.
But which Knop brother?
Herman li is better at finger picking, but Mark is still out of this world
Dang your right bro that drummer was on it
Love your comments ... and philosophy.
Terry Williams on the drums!! What a beast!!
Best living guitarist😊
The best live band then and now. Their music is timeless and all brilliant musicians
Interesting fact.
The album this track is from, Brothers in Arms, when released on CD, was considered the most perfect studio album and was used by Sony and Philips to perfect the balance of the lasers used in every CD player and every CD player had one or the other companies lasers in them
That drummer was beating that kit like it owed him money!
Mark Knopflers guitar was amazing, no strings attached, incredible. xx
The drummer was so good that I had to look him up. Props to Terry WIlliams.
Reminds me of a young Bob Dylan if he was just starting out in our day and age. Just does ✌️
Mark actually was friends with Bob, and you can probably find the 2 of them together on TH-cam
My all time favorite song ! Great band!
So, this is the first video I've seen from this creator and I was wondering how the heck reacting to 80s music videos could possibly have so many subscribers....
And the he smiled 😮🤯🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I've always loved this song for all the little musical references throughout the song. Not everyone will, can, catch them.
The keyboard player is the dancer, you are an amazing guy, Brilliant
Stephen....United Kingdom
It's the keyboard guy dancing.
This is why Eric Clapton calls Mark "Easy".
IT'S DOPE ASS EVERYTHING MAN! Terry Williams is the drummer. The greatest. Mark Knopfler is the singer/guitar lead. Greatest live performance in history in my opinion.
I have always loved this song but recently became a fan of the band (better late than never)...because of Mark Knopfler's incredible guitar playing! If you get a chance listen to Brothers in Arms...Love your reactions ☺️ Mark is the lead singer and guitarist!!
The outro/solo on Tunnel Of Love is pure awesomeness. Sooo smooth.
Carousel !
What a BANGER
I saw them and they were amazing and I have to say I never saw an audience groove to music like I saw with these guys people were dancing in their seats it was something to witness
That guy is on the keyboards and when he doesn't have a part, he goes crazy dancing. The drummer is Terry Williams and he too is one of the best
You got it Van! Mark Knopfler, lead guitarist extraordinaire, founded the band with his brother David. So yes, they were rocking out from the get-go - and it shows!
That's Hal playing as David left a while before..
I loved watching your face… Your smile and your eyes were twinkling… 🥰 So glad you’re getting to hear music for the first time that I’ve been hearing and seeing since the 1960s 🎶
Great video. Mark is so much fun to watch. His picking is unique. And he has as much fun playing as we do watching him. He's always smiling it seems. John Illsley is the bass player in white suit.
So fun to see new people learn the music I grew up with!
This is one of the greatest songs of ALL time.
So much talent on that stage! I believe that the drummer was going bananas because a family member was getting to see him live.
His solo was just about to begin here!! Your smile is priceless !🤓❤️😍
What a birthday treat for me. I love this band and especially this song. They were so outstanding I don't even have a word for it. Mark Knopfler kept playing long after the band broke up. As lead guitarist and lead singer, he brought so much to the band, yet every one of the was a stand out. Mark went on to work with Emmylou Harris for a couple of years, and they released an album that is fantastic. You should react to their song IF This is Goodbye.
Simplemente geniales!! Mark Knopfler, como siempre: risueño e impecable con su guitarra.
Cuento aparte, el GRAN TERRY WILLIAMS... tremendo baterista ❤
The Sultans of Swing with the Solo with Saxophone ( Dire Straits Live from Nimes) I see it 5 times live is outstanding better as this version (but the Song is great, good reaction from You!! Thank you
❤Dire Straights❤Sultan of Swing😂🎉😅
The guy dancing is the keyboardist. You should check out the solo for their wembley live version of "Tunnel of Love"
One of the keyboard players, there are two.
This concert went for hours and each song was as good as this one!
Check out Telegraph Road from the same ‘Alchemy’ concert. It’ll blow your mind.
Hey dude, I've watched this reaction many times and just now decided to comment (#nerdtalk incoming!): When you're asking wether they're getting "quieter" before the chorus - Yes. Dire Straits were masters of musical DYNAMIC which describes the range between the points of lowest and highest volume within a song. The larger said range, the more dynamic the song is. This is being displayed jawdroppingly good when they enter the bridge part (@8:12) from which they then build up again towards the loudest part at the end. You can even see the bass being manually decreased in volume (@10:06) by turning its volume knob (or Potentiometer) and later being increased again. As opposed to having the audio engineer do that from the soundpit. Amazing stuff.
Dire Straits bro! That was our sound in the outgoing 70's and starting into the 80's. Leadsinger and leadguitarist's Mark Knopfler's sound until this day has remained as unique as can be! He has grown older but I believe he is still performing. Bands like this made it reasonable to save up for a decent sound system other than just a boombox or a walkman. You wanted these guys to perform inside your living room or in your kid's room depending your age. More of that bro, can't go wrong with Dire Straits.
it's been said that you can judge the performance to expect by the number of sweat bands Mark is wearing :) And yes that drummer is fire. This is one of my favourites. I think I'm right in saying that the younger guy in the black tanktop is Mark's brother. If you haven't yet heard Gary Moore, I'd suggest his appearance at the Montreux Festival , Still Got the Blues, or Parisienne Walkways, or any really. One of the best without a doubt.
one of the most relatable early musician songs
It's definitely MORE fun watching this with you, Van. I saw these guys live in concert, but watching it with you is still more fun.
Telegraph Road from this concert is maximum epic. This whole concert and also DIRE STRAITS-SYDNEY FINAL CONCERT 1986 which is easy to find on TH-cam with the song Tunnel Of Love and the whole concert too are my 2 fav. concerts ever with a special mention to DS On The Night live1993. All easily accessible here. Love your reaction so much bro. Hope you have a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. All the best. Cheers from Australia. 😊🎸🎸🎸
Van you are one of the Kool Kids, that's why so many of us watch you. It's like hanging out with a friend(s) and listening to and discussing the music that you love. This was an excellent reaction to an excellent song. By the way Van, I do believe you caught a vibe from this song ( I was smiling as I wrote that ).
Check out Money for nothing LIVe
Mark Knopfler (Dire straits singer) on vocals/Phil Collins on Drums/ Eric Clapton on guitar / Sting on backup vocals
Getting tired just reacting to them! Haha,I love it. This band always gives everything they’ve got.Love your reaction.👍🇬🇧
Love the song...never saw the video. Glad I got to watch it with you!
Heard this song countless times, but not this video. Just great. Your reaction put a smile on my face. Thanks. So much fun
You get a shiver in the dark
It's a raining in the park but meantime-
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie, double four time
You feel alright when you hear the music ring
Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down
Competition in other places
Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound
Way on down south
Way on down south
London town
You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords
Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
They said an old guitar is all, he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright
He can play the Honky Tonk like anything
Savin' it up, for Friday night
With the Sultans
We're the Sultans of Swing
There’s a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best baggies and their best Kings road
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band
It ain't what they call Rock and Roll
And the Sultans
Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole
Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
"Goodnight, now it's time to go home"
Then he makes it fast with one more thing
"We are the Sultans
We are the Sultans of Swing"
Dude lol! I love it! Seeing young folks discovering truly extraordinary live music. No auto tune, no pitch corrected vocals, just sheer raw talent! This is one of my favorite videos because it shows you what todays music will never have… authentic talent, they are actually playing and actually singing live, no lip syncing to digitally mastered studio recorded vocals or instrumental backing tracks played for them to pretend too. You will rarely if ever see an actual “live” performance from any artist today, simply because technology has made real talent obsolete.
Taylor Swift!!??? Really!? It’s only going to get worse with A.I. kudos to your discovery my man… keep digging into the 50’s, 60’s the 70’s & even some of the 80’s it will open your eyes in a wonderful way to music that is the G.O.A.T.
Ha ha, just love the way you called them 'these old guys' - this concert was in 1983, Mark Knopfler (lead guitar and singer/songwriter) was 33 and the guy in the white suit, John Illsley, was 34!
Sadly I never saw Dire Straits but I had the pleasure of seeing Mark in concert twice in 2019. He's lost his hair and maybe a bit of dexterity on the guitar but there's no doubt when he steps on stage you're in the presence of greatness.
For a similar kind of sound, try 'Tunnel Of Love' (my favourite).
For a slower sound, try 'Romeo and Juliet' or 'Your Latest Trick'.
For something more serious, try 'Telegraph Road' or 'Brothers In Arms'.
For something fun try 'Money For Nothing'.
Great reaction!
Amazing individual guitar player 🤟
VANNN‼️
It's the perfect time of the year to play
Trace Atdkin
Song is
🎵 YOU'RE GONNA MISS THIS 🎵 🎶
Keep the good work VAN ✌
The guy in the white suit plays bass, I think he is brother to Mark, would so loved to have been there.
You witnessed my favorite group of all time. Mark is my favorite songwriter and guitarist as well. It’s really hard to say which is his better talent. Got to see them in ‘83. Thanks for this reaction! Try Telegraph Road next.
