- Kailashnath is a widower, and father of an only son, Ramesh. He feels that his son has come of age, and must get married. He goes to see a number of young ladies for him, but is disappointed with them, as he feels they are too modern, speak English, and listen to foreign music. He feels that Ramesh will be better off marrying a non-English speaking lady, preferably from a small village. But the predicament of Ramesh is that he is already in love with Ramola, a very well qualified, English speaking Doctor, and he knows fully well that she will not be approved by his dad. So Ramesh, Ramola and Lalaji concoct a plot, making Ramola masquerade as a naive, non-English speaking village belle, with hilarious and unpredictable results.

I always loved to watch uttpal dutta and amol palekars movie... Golmal and choti si baat is my all time favorite.. Deepti is looking beautiful in this movie.. And farooq acting as usual superb ❤❤

It was probably in 1983 when I watched this film in a cinema hall in Calcutta with my cousin. I was 15 and in class 10. Almost all the scenes of this movie are still entrenched in my mind. Especially the last 10 minutes which beautifully brings about the climax. Like all Hrishikesh Mukherjee movies this one too comes with a perfect mix of comedy, romance, lovely music and a social message (that female emancipation has no conflict with traditions) ably assisted by such a wonderful display of acting by some true stalwarts. A film bereft of violence and foul words, it epitomises all that was best those days. ♥♥

Hats off to HrishiDa's perseverance n craftsmanship in driving home the point, time n again, without being loud n preachy!
Except for advancement in technology, not much has changed wrt social challenges, rather, they've become worse today.
Wish we could've had more from HrishiDa, especially in today's times as opposed to the criminal trash that Bullyweed dishes out now.

Yes, absolutely. Myself a great fan of late Hrishikesh Mukherjee from my childhood after seeing his 'Aashirwad' (1969). He possessed such a quality that audience suddenly starts cry due to emmotion while laughing in comedy scene and vise-versa. But Basu da was a light comedy movie maker.

This movie has been one of my childhood favourites - from the days when we used to watch these gems on Doordarshan. Sadly, such author-backed, well written stories are not made into films anymore, or even if they are made, there are hardly any takers.
Don't know how many times I have watched this movie. Every time it has been fun to watch with such great actors..
This is simply superb and the creator was a genius. Simply why we can't find the films like these. Really splendid and equally can't express my heartfelt gratitude 💞 to the the Hrikesh Mukherjee.

You are partially correct because in those days also lot of garbage movies were made(though not as worse as today) and directors and filmmakers like Hrishikesh Mukherjee ,Basu Chatterjee used to provide oxygen for the industry to survive.
Watched it 3rd time since this movie was first produced back in 80s. Could not stop my tears of joy and happiness. Such a classic movie that we can seldom see such production coming these days.

The person who did the role of the policeman in this movie was a great actor. He was a hidden gem; however, the Bollywood failed to recognize his acting skills.
His name is Harish, has been in Bollywood since early 70s as a young guy, last I saw him was in serials like Dekh Bhai Dekh, Zabaan Sambhalke, Zee Horror show etc. He always had some unique small roles in every Hrishikesh Mukherjee movies.
Harish Magon is no longer with us. He passed away in 2023. 😢
