I Love the idea of telling a story in the stitch. My mother was a crochet stitcher and she made the most beautiful embroidered projects with my father in the 70’s that it actually took me into little projects many seasons later. I searched for left handed hand stitching and you came up, thankfully. Right away I was drawn to your style and video. I injured my right hand and over use causes pain. Yesterday I decided to do hand stitching/ slow stitching/ embroidery left handed so when my hand needs a break I can continue one of my passions. Misti you have double blessed me today. I have been wanting to do a continuous strip like yours and how fantastic to show my beginnings of left-handed hand stitching and how it changes with practice and loving the lessons I learn from mistakes I make. As a lefty embroiderer, my thread twists up like yours does. Wonder if it is a common problem to everybody or just lefties? I stop occasionally and just give the needle a few twists back to untwist the thread.
Interesting observation, I've never thought about it before. It likely has to do with the direction that the thread is spun (either clockwise or counterclockwise), which would no doubt, like so many things, favour right handed people. When I remember, I let the threads dangle to untwist
Truly lovely work! You mentioned you don't like to pin the little bits of fabric when you're securing them. Is it possible to use a lightly tacky adhesive to hold them in place? If so, is there a specific product you suggest over all others? If so, which and why? Would that make the thread tangle and make the needle gummy? What about hairspray? Would that work?
Thank you for the suggestions. It's actually a personal preference to not tack down the bits of cloth. I'd rather do things in the most simple way without having to buy more "stuff". I also like the randomness and variability I get when the pieces shift slightly.

In this project, I'm using such tiny pieces of cloth that they aren't too floppy and if I make a stitch or two in the middle they are pretty much secured and stay in place.

Thank you. I don’t have any plans to use or exhibit it. I make things because making them gives me pleasure. It’s about the process for me and the end result is less important to me
I don’t usually bother too much about what needle I use. A few things to try. Use natural fibres (cotton, wool, linen, silk). Polyester fibres dull needles quickly. Use less densely woven cloth. I don’t usually have a problem getting a needle through most quilting cottons, but some other cottons meant for dress shirts and other clothing seem harder to hand sew.
Thanks. I’m not sure what you mean about securing the back. I either put knot in the end of my threads or I do a few small overlapping stitches. They don’t usually come loose and if they do that’s easy enough to deal with
On some of my cross stitching that I know will be handled I usually cover the backing with a light mixture of water and glue just to help hold it together.

It happens to right handed sewers also and I also let the needle hang down so it unravels.

Absolutely beautiful! This was the wild and whimsical look I was looking for. But how do you secure the back? Do you use some kind of glue?
